Ok today it's almost a week since I posted this thread and nothing has been done about this problem. Now, I'm actually not that impatient and can fully understand that nothing has been done, but as far as I can tell - nothing has even been said about this problem. I saw that Notch is aware of the logging in issue, but he has not mentioned at all these persisting lag issues that came with 1.3. I'm almost starting to be a bit annoyed. Almost.

A kiss on the hand may be quite continental, but diamonds are a girl's best friend.
So very interesting that turning limit framerate on fixed your guys problem somewhat...Considering the fact that in the latest patch(1.3 Beta) limit framerate is FORCED on by code(according to a good friend of mine who mods minecraft). Switching it on and off does nothing.
I run my own server and I had this issue with 1.3, the only way I was able to remedy it was by limiting the frame rate, spawning a new 1.3 map and turning ALL mobs off, both peaceful and hostile. I tried other servers and still had severe lag spikes with mobs turned on, but some are playable and the lag is infrequent, On my server I have no issues, aside from the dated hardware I run it on. try some of those things and see if they work for you. I have to stress trying a newly spawned 1.3 maps, my converted ones still lag.
I can't believe this is still happening. Minecraft has been unpredictable for me ever since the update! It was working fine an hour ago, and now suddenly I can barely play SMP because of all the problems already listed.
I'm shocked that such a problem hasn't received attention (or even recognition) yet. Please, please, PLEASE let there be a fix for this so we can all play reliably again!
Unfortunately, I have to add my name to the list. I've never had a problem with SMP before, but now I can't play at all. I'm always the only person on the server who has this problem, and for quite a while my friends thought I was crazy because they can play with no problems.
My personal experience is that I join the game in an endless void, which fixes itself after waiting for a few minutes. The chat has a 3-5 minute lag, and sometimes my messages don't even go through. Then when I attempt to explore there are whole chunks of the world missing and they refuse to load. Blocks I destroy don't stay gone and blocks I place vanish. The process just repeats itself if I disconnect and re-log. I have no mods, wiped my computer clean of all Minecraft files and did a clean reinstall, messed with graphics settings, checked for driver updates, and even redid my firewall and port settings.
I understand that Notch, Jeb, and company all went to the GDC, so I am just going to be patient and wait for them to come back and notice our posts on the forums or Get Satisfaction. After that, I am confident that they will bend their heads together and make a fix.
I even tried the Limit Framerate solution. Chunk loading time is significantly increased, but everything has a delayed effect; broken blocks reappear; falling gives no damage; teleporting to a previous location is occuring 3/4 times. It helped, but also brought along a new problem, and that's not much better.

Been having the same problems as most people here. Some servers the map doesn't load. All servers destroyed blocks reappearing, placed blocks disappearing, and I can't chat at all. If I quit and rejoin everything I've destroyed is gone and placed is there and I can chat for a couple seconds. I have this problem on my desktop, but not my laptop, so it's not a connection issue.

Are you sure? Sounds like a Pentium M to me, and that is a single core processor.
Edit: Ah, might be a Merom-2M Pentium Dual Core. Mea culpa!
Well i have a Windows 7, Genuine Intel(R) CPU 2.00GHz Processor, i dont know if its dual core but i still have lagg in multiplayer. D:

Delete .minecraft folder
Uninstall java
Reinstall java
Reload minecraft
Worked for me so far. I've gone on a couple servers and not had that damn lag.
Already tried this a couple of times, no change for me...
This is madness.
for all of you
