I just verified the specs for the machine my friend is running MC on. He also runs the server.
Win 7 Ultimate
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 940 @ 2.93GHz (x64) (quad-core)
6G of RAM
He has no such issues with blocks appearing, disappearing, yada yada.
Earlier today when I was playin, the lag was actually causing me to loose blocks. I placed a row of obsidian down, it all disappeared and came back one by one, except the last two blocks. I waited for several minutes before placing two more blocks of obsidian, which thankfully stuck around. That kind of crap *really* pisses me off. Loosing blocks is just plain annoying. Dirt or sand is one thing, but obsidian takes forever to farm, so loosing it is the ultimate **** off.
I really hope this gets fixed soon.

P.S. I'll be running MC on my bros big machine over the weekend, hopefully it gives me more data points for comparison.
This happened to me too. But for all the computers in my house. we could all move around fine, but we each saw eachother just standing there. Some of us just fell through the world (and died) over and over again when we joined. and every so often the server seemed to "update" and everyone just started speeding around with blocking disappearing and buildings coming up everywhere
Same issues here. Here's a comprehensive laydown:
Updated to 1.3 when it was released - migrated 1.2 server into it.
This worked okay up until today. Worked last night (24hrs ago) flawlessly with me and one friend on a brand new server that i run alternately on my machine.
Tonight, however, insane amounts of lag, even for me, and im connecting as localhost. pretty much unplayable.
As my friend gets disconnected, the server log reports that it was a "disconnect.Overflow". the server pushes out a "can't keep up! did the system time change, or is the server overloaded?" message every three or so seconds, when it is only running at 40% capacity.
Single player works okay. One thing i have noticed is that my two javaw.exe processes combine for about 800mb worth of RAM usage, we all just updated to java update 24, and that the release notes mention: "Dependencies on Java 1.6 are gone".
Running:
OS: Vista Basic (i know, i know, but 1.2 worked perfectly fine)
CPU: Pentium DualCore 2.2GHz
RAM: 4gb DDR2-800
GRAPHICS: ATI Radeon HD5670 1gb GDDR3 dedicated
JAVA: 6 update 24
Vanilla minecraft, no mods, no texture packs, no nothing. Also, the new map file type loads up in the server instantly, whereas the old one took sometimes 30-45 seconds to prepare. so the file type should only speed up transfers over the network....right?
I have a linux machine and this problem is effecting it as well. I am running a 1.6 GHz single core with 756 MB ram. I know, pretty pitiful, but single player works flawlessly no matter the settings and multi worked beautifully before the recent update as long as I had my distance set to normal or less. My issues are a bit different though. I can chat fine, real time even. But placing and destroying blocks is... different. I start digging through some dirt and get through about ten blocks, then I get teleported back to my starting point and none of the blocks are gone. If I place a block, 7/10 times it will disappear. Now for the different part. If I stand perfectly still while I mine the blocks, they almost always stay gone (I would say 4 out of 5 blocks produce materials without reappearing), but if I lay blocks, they all disappear.
At first I thought it was the crap bucket ISP I have (*cough* hughesnet *cough*), since I have lag problems on most games I play. I even get lag on their customer service chat window, so yeah, some of it is the ISP. The thing that made me doubt my ISP being the root of these new problems is the fact that I can chat just fine, but can't mine between the chats. When lag is due to my ISP, my whole game suffers, not just the mining part.
Same here, my windows xp desktop get's terrible lag. Evey now and then it speed up but only for a few minutes before it's delayed again. Tried the game on my mother crappy laptop and it runs just fine. Shes running windows xp. Would be nice to get some kind of word on a fix.
my sister have one core and 2gb memory i have 6 core and 4 gb memory and its works fine on me but when i host and sister join shes game lag altough if she host and i join i work fine and she lag in her's own server ; O
(sry bad english)
Yes, but if you'd read the thread you'd see that this problem is not only affecting single-core computers. So the problem is not "solved".

So, I just fixed this for myself. I don't expect everyone to do this but I installed unbutu and it totally took care of the block/chat lag. What I was left with was horrible fps lag so I figured out that if you install the regular drivers instead of open sourced driers the fps lag totally goes away. I'm also running sun java instead of the open source stuff. Now the game is as smooth as single player was.
When I log on, I fall through the world for a minute or two. Eventually I end up on the ground, but the world only extends a short way around me. There's tons of mobs spawning and falling up and down in the void, and the sun is frozen in one location. Blocks reappear when I dig them, pigs won't die when I punch them, and I don't receive damage from falling. Chat doesn't appear either.
This problem only seems to happen when I log on from my computer.

I personally don't have this problem but I know two people that does. Extreme chat and interaction lag with chunks taking forever to load.
Its a very odd problem since on the server I play on, everyone else are fine but my friend. Then the other has problem on a server he plays with his brother.
I have no idea what their specs are but I think I'll link them this thread.
I also have a single core TOSHIBA that has been more than enough to run Minecraft on until this patch.
But it definitely looks like single core computer users are the ones getting this problem. I'm not gonna be able to buy a new computer just to be able to run Minecraft though :sad.gif:
I get the lag on a Core 2 Duo, which I assume has 2 cores
It's definitely not a network problem, I get block regeneration on localhost that I didn't get before, X11 on Linux sends gigabits of video data through localhost and has no real lag despite this major design flaw

Those single core PCs are like 10 years old. They arnt even sold in stores and I dont even think you will find 1 on Ebay thats how old it is.
Minecraft isnt the problem, your outdated PC is.
Yeah everyone knows that single cores just suddenly lag when Mojang updates Minecraft. People like you are the reason consoles are popular
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.66GHz 2GB of ram
Windows XP SP3 (was on SP2 when the problems started)
Asus EAH5770 Series
To be clear... i've been playing for months without any kind of lag it only started when i updated minecraft to 1.3
Same as everyone else, upon joining a server, i simply fall in the air for a long while and after that is horrible lag.
Also instead of flaming single core users, you should brainstorm about our problem.
We're able to play multiplayer games which are more resource intensive than minecraft.
The only program/game we're having issues with are Minecraft and only since the last patch.
Our PCs may be old but they are more than capable of running it.
It's obviously something they can fix and probably will.. hopefully soon.
[EDIT] For now Limiting Framerate totally fixed it, i have no lag at all, im able to send and receive requests from the server instantly
Me too. My lag is at the point where multiplayer is pretty much unplayable for me. My framerate is down to 1fps if I'm lucky, and before the update I never had a problem. I'm even getting lag when I play single player online, but offline I'm fine (I get it sometimes). Hope this is fixed soo, because it's frustrating and leaves Minecraft as useless and unplayable.
same exact problems as mine, i kid you not. this is so frustrating, because it just might be my computer. I was on the computer at mt local library and, lo and behold, it works. Pissed off I go back home, delete everything, all mods and texture packs and my .jar file of minecraft. It still doesn't work :/ after a couple hours of crying bitterly playing single player (for ever alone ;-:wink.gif: it still dosent work. Iam running minecraft on a .jar file on a dell dual core processor with (really dont know how much ram and space so cant post it )

It all runs pretty well when I'm the only one online.
Has anybody else noticed this?
Also, has anybody noticed a correlation between this and SMP mods?
