I strongly recommend, in your case, upgrading to Lucid Lynx (10.04). I had insane problems of all sorts with Karmic and Windows 7 drivers and Java and the like, but everything works amazingly well in Lucid.
If you can't, for some reason, update to Lucid, then I'd start by looking for memory errors, or restoring your computer to an earlier pre-update backup.
Found something that worked for me. For now at least.
Download the offline client on another computer that doesn't have the data error (probably best to not have a .minecraft folder in %appdata% on that computer beforehand).
Log on and start a new world in minecraft on that computer then save and exit.
Then copy its %appdata% .minecraft folder.
Get rid of the .minecraft folder in %appdata% on the computer with the data error.
Then paste the .minecraft folder from the good computer into %appdata% on the computer that has the data error.
The computer suffering the LMZA Data Error should now run Minecraft!
Sloppy but at least it's a working solution to the LZMA Data Error.
PS. My OS is a XP 64bit and I copied the files from a XP 32bit.
Edit: Whenever you quit Minecraft, make sure you end the "javaw.exe" process in task manager, or else when you start Minecraft up again, it'll just just hang on a black screen.
I get
"An error occured loading the applet
Please contact support to resolve this issue
Fatal error occured(5): LZMA: Data error"
Didn't start happining until some of the more recent indev updates.
Ubuntu Linux 9.10, Most recent java release, Firefox 3.5
All updates applied.
