I had started hosting a small minecraft server just for me and some friends last year. A few days later, I had the command prompt opened up and running my server, when my Dad came in and asked me what it was. So I told him. He asked me what they needed to connect, and I said: "The IP address". He freaked out at me and I ended up having my computer taken away. One of my friends had started hosting it for me, but was no longer capable of hosting it, so now I'm trying to figure out what to do. /end story.
What my dad was concerned about is that our network hides behind a NAT, meaning that the IP address is the same for every computer in the house. He, for some reason, thinks hosting a Minecraft server off of port 25565 is a security risk to our network, even though, port 25565 on our network is forwarded to MY computer. He is concerned that people will be able to get into our files just from forwarding the Port 25565. He doesn't believe me when I tell him it is safe, even though I have more knowledge on how these servers work, and how the internet and networks work. I even know how the Packet system for Minecraft works, but HE STILL doesn't believe me. Also, the reason I don't want to pay for hosting is I have a computer that I own that is capable of hosting one.
Could you kind people on here just answer one question for my dad:
Is there any risk that someone could get into the files on my DAD's computer, if I host a Minecraft server off of my computer?
(Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section, just don't have a better place to ask than here.)
You cannot worry about giving away the ip address, everything you connect to can see you ip. Your ip is as public as your hair Color or your gender when you walk around town.
If you're still worried about giving away your IP, you could mask it a tiny bit with a hostname. You could use a free one from DynDns. Although it is extremely easy to find out the IP the hostname points to, most people won't care to do that.
You should never port forward on your network. When you have an open port, it's like leaving the door open to a safe. It's possible to trick your network to think that the incoming request (from a computer not on your network) is from your own computer (using that port), and then take control of it.
I've had a friend go onto my computer, lock me out, and take files off of it just by having the port 25655 open.
Firewalls where invented for a reason... Anyways, anyone that knows anything about networking knows port-forwarding port 25565 is completely safe.
It's fine THERE IS NO RISKS for hosting one. I suppose you're trying to get jca2323 to buy your hosting (Which sucks. Offense required). No need to scare his dad into thinking that it is danagerous. Because it isn't.

Anyone who know something about networking thinks it's safe. Anyone who knows something about hacking knows it's not. Also, no I'm not trying to get him to buy my hosting at all. If you read my post, you would know that I didn't even include a link. Also, are you really saying my hosting "sucks", even though you've never used it, and I have plenty of happy customers. What are you, 6? Seriously, grow up.

I think we have another genius in the forums here. You cannot send a incoming request and take control of a computer because it says it's coming from that computer. That's not how TCP/IP works.

Then you know nothing about hacking. Also, "another genius"? I was just trying to offer some help, as I don't believe it's safe at all after seeing what is possible with hacking (which you obviously haven't). If you really want to continue this, send me a PM and stop posting on this thread.
That probably had nothing to do with the port being open, but rather with you being dumb enough to leave administrative network shares on (they're on by default since XP, maybe even Win2k already.. \\computername\C$ go paste that into the explorer address bar if you don't believe me)
I was using a Mac. If you guys don't believe it's possible, fine then, don't. I'm just trying to offer some help since his dad was quite worried about this. Also, can you all please stop quoting me saying I have no idea what I'm doing. I know what I'm doing. Seriously, leave me alone.
Anymore posts. My dad says he's "thinking about it", but he needs more people posting in this before he makes his official decision.
And EliteHost, Thank you for your time, but I have to disagree on what you are saying. If the server is running on that port, it is in use. I don't think it is possible to get access to my files without sharing them on the network. I used a virtual machine for my server, so worst comes the worst; the virtual machine is broken.

Yeah, without sharing the files on the network, it's pretty much impossible. I was just directly connected which is why. Either way, best of luck and I hope everything works out.
does your dad work for a major tech company such as Microsoft cause my dad also freaked out and wont let me run until I have done more homework on servers and ports

Every time you go into a website, they can see your IP.However, firewall was made for a reason, and so,you are protected

I have found the danger to be minimal.... keep your banking information off the network if possible.
