I have been looking for a free server host for a long time now. Yes, there are some free ones, but they always have a catch, like the server closes after a day or even an hour. I know this may be too much to ask, but does anyone know of a free server host that is 24/7, with NO catches? Btw, I only need a vanilla server. Memory doesn't really matter unless it's under like 510mb.
Most free ones like unknownsheep said above, have catches. Triangle closes your server if you don't check back every 24 hours, and to get your server set up you get put in a queue that over time keeps moving slower and slower, and it goes on forever.
I use Minecrafted.net to host my server, and they have 1GB RAM servers for $2 a month, and excellent hosting.
The question is, though, if I host my own server, will it have horrible block lag? I really don't get block lag on my computer and have decent wifi and fps.
Sounds cool! As of now, I don't really know much about McMyAdmin or server ownership, but I'll learn! I do know how to set up the server properties file and the whitelist and that stuff. Question: Would I have full access to modify a few things about the server, such as add plugins, make a server name and picture, make spawn, and maybe a whitelist (you would be on it :P) ?
I would plan on hosting a relatively small server, with about 50 players max. (but would probably never get to 50 :P) It would be a server with essentials, mcmmo, and a few other plugins, for the public. I would advertise it and tell all my friends so that there would be players. I would expect people to be on every day. Some of my friends can play for hours upon hours, so they would be. It would just be a small survival server with minigames, but it would grow a community and people would enjoy playing on it. So overall, I would get really good use from the server. Servers that I am staff on (especially owner!) I love to play on. I would cut down my time on other servers and make this one my main priority.
Check out Prohost.gs. New hosting service, completely free. Each server gets 769mb of ram and 20 slots. You have full access to the control panel and will be able to manage plugins, modpacks, worlds, etc in the near future.
There will be ads on your server if you go with prohost.gs

I have a server that I no longer use for Minecraft hosting. After talking to you and waiting to hear back from others I offered the same server I may be willing to give you access to the system for free. The catch would be a minimum usage; if you are not using the server for weeks at a time or more, then I may request that I give it to some one else. I could arrange FTP|SSH|SFTP|McMyAdmin access.
Yesterday I got my new pc so I don't have anything to do with my old pc anymore.
I can host a 4 player server with 2GB of RAM with plugins/mods or just vanilla.
If you have any questions just ask:)
Just so you know these are being hosted on home PCs and not actual server hardware so it's going to lag a fair bit. Also the first post I quoted showed 2.5Mbps upload which is absolutely terrible for running a server.

I would like to say that I disagree with your statement. Although I'm not sure about the other guy, my computer is running server grade hardware as far as I know. I would agree with you about the internet speed if not for my experience playing on the server. With 5Mbps I could host 10 people with no, or very minimal and non intrusive, block or chat lag; even after the downgrade I have no noticed a change, I haven't had 10 people to test with lately however so this is just speculation. I would like you to backup your opinion because I want to know where your coming from.
Okay, obviously it's impossible to tell if it's server grade or not without you giving me your CPU as there's a a lot of Dual-Core 3.1GHz CPUs out there. I was just making an assumption it's not server grade as most people don't have server grade hardware in their computers.

I did start a server with prohost.gs, but there is a MAJOR flaw. Every time you start the server again, it resets the world. That renders the server almost useless.

Since they have FTP all you have to do is download all the files and re implement them.... i think they are going to allow server save later on

Well, guess I'll have to run my own server then lol. *Googles how to make a server*

Oh ok, I understand now. Thanks for explaining. I didn't really get the concept when I posted this thread
