Hello! As the title suggets, I currently run a small server (6 regular players, a couple more non-regular), running on a friend's PC. We have a customized Feed The Beast modpack (originally direwolf20_17 pack), and the current hosting PC simply doesn't have enough juice to run it as well as we'd like at times.
I had sent a message to one hosting provider I can't remember the name of, and got no response...messaged ggservers.net asking a few questions about their hosting, and got an unfortunately unhelpful reply that didn't answer anything, so I'm really hoping someone here can help me out
I put together a small sort of 'criteria' list for what I'm ideally looking for, though I'm pretty flexible as far as working with the tools of a given hosting platform, so if it sounds close please don't hesitate to let me know!
- Typically I'm used to SSH & SCP for accessing the server, but I realize many hosting providers do their access through FTP, so either works, but one at least I'd think would be necessary, as I manage the modpack jars/configs, as well as server.properties, ops.json, etc.
- Looking for 8/10/12 slots
- At least 4092MB, but I'd be very interested in seeing how the price varies with RAM (This is the only part a bit more info on would be awesome, as I'm fairly sure our server would need the higher amount of RAM due to the large amount of mods running, please correct me if I've got that all wrong )
- Access to the server console is a plus
- Multiple admin users allowed is also a plus
- Backup support...Currently we use AromaBackup, a fantastic little mod that handles manual and auto backups. I realize server providers don't like users letting their backups get crazy bloated and huge, so I keep this very tailored. ggservers told me I couldn't use this, but did offer an alternative, so if that's the case with any other provider I'm totally fine with trying something else!
- We have the ComputerCraft mod in full swing, and for those not too familiar, it is a cool programming mod that has some great features that allow for downloading pastebin scripts to your in-game computers. while this isn't necessarily a dealbreaker, there's a few of us that make use of this functionality and we'd be pretty bummed out if it was disabled / not allowed, as this is up to the server port rules, if i'm not mistaken.
That's pretty much it! I really appreciate anyone taking their time to help me out.

- GGServers is one of the worst, so stay away, you'd be lucky to get on a node that doesn't have 20MB's of oversold RAM left..
- If you're used to SSH & SCP then perhaps a VPS, I use SSH to manage all my servers and I have no problems, 99% of panels and unsecured FTP regular hosts use just makes me cry, and I wouldn't be surprised if you were the same.
- 4096MB*, also you shouldn't need that much RAM, they're just mods, so they'll mainly use CPU power. Even with 20 players, you'd probably do fine with 2048MB/2GB.
Whats your budget, maybe I could find a powerful Linux VPS, as that seems to be what'd suit you best..?
you're correct in that a Linux VPS setup would be definitely ideal compared to what's typically offered with hosting providers. TBH I haven't looked much at VPS for hosting, as i assumed they would be significantly more expensive (i'm not necessarily on a restricted budget or anything, but i'm also okay with a few less privileges if it means 1/3 of the cost ). I am thinking a $20/mo budget at the higher end, but I'm saying that compared to some of the pricing i've seen for minecraft hosting. I'd be okay with it being a bit higher if it felt worth it.
thanks for the advice on the RAM, too! I assumed that was what the mods really chewed up. Are these server providers that have crazy high RAM plans mostly intended for huge player counts, or something then?
Thanks again bud, I appreciate the help and advice. ggservers was a pretty big letdown so it's great to see people like yourself helping out.

Depending on where you want your server located, VPS's could even be cheaper. Generally they'll be at least two times the price of a decent host though.
Most server providers will go down the following roads when asked a question about why they offer so much RAM;
- These plans are for servers with 100 players+! Issue is, their CPU's are either oversold heaps, low single threaded performance or generally low clock rates, which means you couldn't even fit 100 players on their CPU alone.. So they're basically flat out lying, It's really pointless to buy more than 4+GB off a shared host.
- Mods use heaps of RAM, 100 mods and 5 players? You'll need at least 3GB! Basically flat out lying to make some extra cash out of you, additionally they'll do this so they don't get crowds of smaller (~1GB) servers with 100mods that uses all their CPU power (because they're using underpowered CPU's) causing massive lag for all the servers on the node..
Mods do use RAM, some even use heaps usually due to incorrect coding causing memory leaks, but generally they won't use much at all..
However, I do offer managed (and unmanaged, if you prefer) VPS's though, might be a little bit out of your budget though..
I'll do a 2GB VPS for $20/mo with powerful E3 CPU's and 30+GB SSD in United States, Europe or Australia, only thing to note is that you wont be able to allocate the full 2GB's to the MC server, so you'd only get about 1.5GB's of usable RAM. Still though, I'll give you a free trial for a few hours to see how it runs!
Hey Max, thanks for the reply. I took a look at the Virtual Gladiators plans and they seem pretty promising, the support sounds awesome too. I just want to confirm a couple things if you don't mind..
➣ Unlimited Storage
Does this mean we can use something like the AromaBackup mod/backup system without problem?
➣ 1 Click Modpack installation (Including FTB, Technic, ATLauncher and many more)
That's awesome to hear...we have a customized version of one of the FTB packs, is it possible to "drop" that in? In the past under a different host, I used their automated modpack system and customized it after, but unfortunately whenever there was an update to the modpack, it would overwrite all of the custom stuff...I know this probably isn't an issue but I'm hoping it's possible to not have the modpack subject to be updated automatically?
➣ Full FTP Access
just to confirm - I could drop an existing world in without much hassle?
➣ A free MySQL Database & Subdomain
out of curiosity, does Virtual Gladiators support user owned domains? I have a couple registered and not in use. not a problem if this isn't possible!
Don’t forget to use this code at checkout for a 10% off your first month: “MaxGlad”
thanks for the offer bud. i noticed your previous posts offer varying discounts, one being a 60% first month discount with the code Sunblock. do these codes expire, or would I be better off with that one?
thanks again, Virtual Gladiators looks like a pretty promising host compared to the others I've looked at so far.
WebSound can cater for your requirements, we offer a wide variety of services to clients with different requirements ranging from pure Vanilla to a variety of modpacks, all of which perform perfectly on our services. We can offer the following package:
4GB RAM
80 Player Slots
Unmetered Disk Space
Unmetered Bandwidth
Multicraft Control Panel
This package costs £12 (around $20) per month, use discount code 25FMOFF for 25% off on the first month.
Storage on our services is intended for server essential files rather than backups, however, we understand that backups need to be taken and therefore you can use our built in system or your custom solution as necessary, but we do ask that no more than a few days worth of backups are retained for fair usage purposes. All of our servers come with full FTP Access and the ability to run a Custom Jar, so you can run and manage all of your files as necessary.
This sounds great! Sounds like pretty much all of my concerns are satisfied..completely agree with your note on fair usage regarding backups, by the way, wouldn't be a problem at all.
Just out of curiosity, where in America are your servers located?
Also, can you speak to the ComputerCraft port capability?
Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it.
We would be a perfect company for you, our servers are priced at 5 euro per GB. We have a server in EU and CA so that should not be a problem, I also invite you to try out one of our trial servers. Get your trial here. On these trials i can install the full modpack for you with the intended ram so you can test our service for free (3 days)

I believe we at Dedicated Minecraft Innvotation can assist you with almost all your requirements
Here is your listing and our responses to them.
- Typically I'm used to SSH & SCP for accessing the server, but I realize many hosting providers do their access through FTP, so either works, but one at least I'd think would be necessary, as I manage the modpack jars/configs, as well as server.properties, ops.json, etc. I understand that you need complete access to your server, you will be able to do everything Minecraft related. From uploading your custom .jar, editing configuration files, and even setting up automated tasks via Multicraft
- Looking for 8/10/12 slots Slots are unmetered so you can set it as you please if you need to from the default setup. It's "unmetered" because you cannot for instance put 1000 players on a 2GB server and etc.
- At least 4092MB, but I'd be very interested in seeing how the price varies with RAM (This is the only part a bit more info on would be awesome, as I'm fairly sure our server would need the higher amount of RAM due to the large amount of mods running, please correct me if I've got that all wrong ) Your in luck you can get more RAM for less! For 4GB we only charge $33.90 per month. Here is our full RAM listing and pricing.
- Access to the server console is a plus Multicraft have full live server's console that you can also send commands through as well.
- Multiple admin users allowed is also a plus We can indeed accommodate this need, we can create addtional users as you require and set them as admins under your server so they can have full admin rights to the server via Multicraft.
Here we are different, use whatever you wish and we won't get mad at all! Just please remain within your 5GB disk space quota and we won't bother you. Need more space? That's not a problem either! You can also ask us to add addtional disk space for only $0.15 per GB of extra disk space you need. We also take daily backups and keep them for up to 3 days so may not need to do it (however if you rather you could do it as a "backup backup" need)
We will indeed can do our best to accommodate your Computercraft needs with regarding need certain ports open for this. We cannot promise we can fully support this however we will do our best to meet this accommodation.
That's pretty much it! I really appreciate anyone taking their time to help me out.
It's not a problem! It's what we do if you wish to get a hold us or if you wish to place an order please PM us or email us at [email protected]

HI! Sorry for the late reply! My apologies!
Firstly, yes. You can store as many files and folders as you like what ever size. The modpack shouldn't auto update unless you select it when it updates. If you have a custom modpack or anything I'm sure we can get it added for you, that's not a problem.
You can add a world yes, we require you to use a seperate FTP program such as FileZilla or WinSCP in order to connect to your files.
If you own a domain and webhosting elsewhere you can add a SRV Record and add your own subdomain to your IP.
Unfortunately the Sunblock code ran out at the end of summer, 10% is the highest we have available right now.
If there is anything else I can do for you feel free to open a livechat!
Thanks for considering us! We appreciate it!
Looking over your criteria for a provider, I am sure we can offer you services that will please you. We offer full ftp access, you can use our panel to send server commands or use minecraft's built in rcon. We have some pricing options for the slots:
Although our website lists suggested slot counts for RAM, we suggest lower slot counts for Forge Servers due to content. You are more than welcome to use AromaBackup and we do not stress size limitations for servers. We also offer dedicated servers as well but if you'd prefer your own SSD just for your server we can add that to the machine and your service as well. We do our best to allow our customers to use any mods for their server and if it needs an extra port for a feature (dynmap bukkit plugin) we have no problem accommodating you. Below is some server specs and features for all of our services:
Custom .JAR support
99.9% Up-time
Dedicated Bare-Metal RAM
FULL FTP Access
FREE MySQL Database
24/7/365 Customer Support

When Ordering Your Premium Server, You Can Choose From 1 of the 3 Control Panels We Offer [Multicraft Spacebukkit or McMyAdmin] VPS with SSD @ $9.95 Per GB of RAMOrder your Premium Minecraft VPS with SSD
I'm Mitch from Shockbyte. We're a registered business in Australia and have been providing Minecraft services for almost 2 years. We're currently the cheapest host in the market at just $2.50 USD/GB. Shockbyte is able to offer you our Iron plan which includes 4GB RAM for just $10.00 USD per month.
You can easily backup your server with Multicraft via scheduled tasks. You can install your own modpack using the Custom Jar drop down option in Multicraft. If you want a subdomain such as server.kryptonhosting.com we can set you up with that for free. You get FTP access for sure, and a dedicated IP for free as well. You can also set the slots to whatever you prefer within the Multicraft control panel, and not that you would need this but we offer DDoS mitigation free of charge with every server. You can setup multiple users/admins for your server as well via the Multicraft control panel. Last but not least, we come in at $4/gb, so of course $16/month to host your server. Since you are running a custom modpack though, I would suggest going with the Unlimited plan. The Unlimited plan is a marketing technique that we are going for where you will get an unlimited amount of ram for just $20/month, all you have to do, is when you need more RAM, tell us and well will investigate your server and make sure it is using more than it has allocated; if so we will upgrade it by a gig at a time. I really hope you choose us, we love the "real" and loyal clients, not the problematic ones.

Most server providers will go down the following roads when asked a question about why they offer so much RAM;
Still though, I'll give you a free trial for a few hours to see how it runs!

out of curiosity, does Virtual Gladiators support user owned domains? I have a couple registered and not in use. not a problem if this isn't possible!
thanks for the offer bud. i noticed your previous posts offer varying discounts, one being a 60% first month discount with the code Sunblock. do these codes expire, or would I be better off with that one?
thanks again, Virtual Gladiators looks like a pretty promising host compared to the others I've looked at so far.

Nice to see you picked up the simple logic in my last reply to you;)
Here is your listing and our responses to them.
- Looking for 8/10/12 slots
Slots are unmetered so you can set it as you please if you need to from the default setup. It's "unmetered" because you cannot for instance put 1000 players on a 2GB server and etc.
- At least 4092MB, but I'd be very interested in seeing how the price varies with RAM (This is the only part a bit more info on would be awesome, as I'm fairly sure our server would need the higher amount of RAM due to the large amount of mods running, please correct me if I've got that all wrong )
Your in luck you can get more RAM for less! For 4GB we only charge $33.90 per month. Here is our full RAM listing and pricing.
- Access to the server console is a plus
Multicraft have full live server's console that you can also send commands through as well.
- Multiple admin users allowed is also a plus
We can indeed accommodate this need, we can create addtional users as you require and set them as admins under your server so they can have full admin rights to the server via Multicraft.
Regards,
VG Team.

My name is Nathan, and I'm the CEO at Lemon Cube Hosting. We price at $5/GB of RAM and meet all of your requirements. In terms of the ComputerCraft mod we allow you to use it, however you will need to contact support for what port to use. The control panel allows you to create backups but you can use your own backup system instead. You can have multiple admins by having your admins create accounts on the panel and you can assign them a role. You have full access to your files and console through FTP & Multicraft. I'd suggest you use 2GB to start as you can always upgrade. Let me know if you have any questions. Our other features are listed down below.
