Even though we are in the "started 1-2 months ago" category, I would like to see a lot of people reading this guide.
Those are good points that are hard to explain to people when they decide to go for the $1 cheaper host.
I'm looking forward to the "Cheaper is not always better" part. I have found that our servers being of high quality hardware and in a top self datacenter, can hold far more people/plugins/mods per GB than other lower quality servers. I had to get into the hosting business to realise this vast difference. Unfortunately RAM is used by hosts as a rule of thumb much like how Megapixels are used by camera manufacturers. More RAM does not always equal better, but for most people this is the only point of reference.
There are companies amidst the minecraft hosting avalanche out there, that are run by efficient mature people and are dedicated on providing good quality services. I hate to see that people are really having a hard time finding out who those hosts are.
I might end up adding a link to this guide on my website.
PS. I don't mind him getting his services advertised. These are things every server owner should know about and in the long run they will affect all of us.
Hey everyone, sorry for being inactive on this thread recently and not updating it very often, I've been very busy! Anyway, things have settled down a bit now and I have some more time on my hands. I've just updated the thread a little, added some new information in existing sections and fixing up a few words, made some improvements, etc. I've decided not to focus on compiling the list and working through the guide that way, I'm hoping now to design it so you can read it in any order and it will make sense.
Over the coming days I will be writing about server specs, what to look for & avoid etc. Stay tuned!
Edit: I've just written the RAM section, this explain what it is, how it works and pretty much explains why it isn't the power of a server.
good comparison of the RAM and the CPU! How about I throw this in the mix so people can find actual performance of the CPUs in question for Minecraft servers? http://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

Please know that benchmarking is not real world performance.

Yep your correct shouldn't said that nothing indeed replaces the real thing, However it is a general gauge to quickly compare them and that particular list is the closest to the real performance of the operation of the Minecraft servers since as said before core count generally doesn't matter since Minecraft is single core and threaded. Very well done Mitch. I'm sure this has helped many people and will continue to assist more in the future. I know it hasn't been updated in a few months, but the information is still relevant.

You'd probably be right with 1-1.5GB of RAM on your server. Australian hosts charge roughly $20/GB at the moment, so it would cost you $20-30 for what you're after. If you were willing to go for a server located in North America, you could cut this price dramatically, for example, we could offer you this for $2.50/mo. (https://shockbyte.com). I'd suggest posting this in the hosting requests section to see what some hosts can offer you: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/servers/minecraft-server-hosting/hosting-requests

You should totally finish this guide!
I still plan to finish it and I still will, I've just become extremely busy over the past few weeks.

I think this post should be a sticky.
The guide was easy to understand and in my opinion very good.
