So I currently host a decent sized minecraft server off an ok laptop. It runs pretty well until I get 35+ players on it, then it gets random and horrible lag spikes. I want a detox ares server to run it on, so I found this server on eBay. Will it work? I've provided a link below. It has the specs and everything. Thanks!

Hi,
Are you sure your internet connection isn't the problem? If you players are experiencing issues when the player count gets over 35~ that may be the issue. The link to the server you gave, probably wouldn't be very ideal. With only 2GB RAM the operating system would use up nearly 25% of that more than likely, if not half of it.

Yes, I am sure it's not my internet. While running the server I still have 25+ mbps down and over 5 mbps up. If that system isn't ideal, then what is? I'm thinking of going to my local computer store. What should I look for? EDIT: The TPS of the server drops down to 16 TPS or sometimes even 13 TPS so I know it's the computer/server.
If you do plan on getting a 1U server like that to use at home I will caution you that noise is a factor. When those servers first start up or are handling a heavy load, the fans get very loud.
That being said, I would recommend a dual L5420 server which can be picked up from ebay for under $200 with 8GB - 16GB RAM. Some of them even include small hard drives.

Well, I have a fan running 24/7 in my room at full blast which pretty much reduces all background noise, and I don't mind noise at all, so that's not going to be an issue. What's really going to be an issue is the cost. Do I really need 8gb of RAM? That seems like an awful lot just to run one Minecraft server and CentOS. The HDD would only have to be 40 GBs as well. Is there anything like that for around 100 dollars? I know I'm asking for a lot so sorry but thanks for your original answer.
2GB isn't going to get you that far. Linux will only use a hundred or so MB but that would barely run a Windows OS. Also don't go to your local PC store you will most likely get ripped off, you can get decent hardware on Ebay.
