My sons love minecraft but I want to be able to control their online experience. I already have my own dedicated server and wanted to know if it's possible to run a small minecraft server for my sons and their friends. (probably 10-20 players max!).
My server specs are as follows
Linux
AMD Dual x8 Opteron 6320 (16 core 2.8ghz per core)
16 GB Ram
1 TB HD
120 GB SSD for MySQL
I am a web designer and host many client sites on the same server. The security of my client sites and other applications we have running is important. I can give a dedicated IP to the MC install and would be whitelisting my kids friends.
Will this be sufficient hardware as to not impact any other functions of my server? Considering I see a lot of hosts selling 500mb - 2gb ram for servers I am thinking we should be OK.
Cool. Thank you for the reply. I do have SSH/FTP and root WHM access to the server. I read on other forum posts that it wasn't a good idea to run Java on a web server. Not sure if MC will conflict with anything in apache or...?

Minecraft would not conflict apache and should not affect the performance too much, as long as you keep the amount of am 1-2 GB.

That server would be more than fine for a small 10-20 slot server. If your SSD drive isn't over 50% full I'd recommend putting the Minecraft files on there, since the web files (cPanel, etc) are on the 1TB HDD running Minecraft on it would be an issue maybe over time since it utilizes much more IOPS than regular applications. 1-2GB RAM should be enough, and I would recommend running Spigot as the server wrapper as it's much more efficient than regular Craftbukkit or vanilla Minecraft.
