Yeah, if you are to start a real hosting company, you need to get proper business registration, website, billing system, servers and all that. At a minimum I would suggest $1500 to start.

You can technically start with no money and a dream... You'd need to be hard wired with internet and have at least a custom built desktop worth 1300$+ at least 50mb\s broadband and knowledge about portforwarding, multicraft, I suggest at least a degree in business.... To register and make a dba is free...

..and this guy. The market already has more than enough fly-by-night "companies" ran by fifteen year olds with no business acumen. Not trying to be rude, just being honest.

Sorry dude, but this is poor advice. In today's world, you aren't going to get started with a real business with no money. Recommending a PC based on what it's worth is not a good idea either. My file server is worth three times what you recommend but would be horrible as a Minecraft hosting rig. Hard specs are a bit more handy. Fifty megabits is also woefully inadequate bandwidth if you intend to be in business providing hosting.

50 mb/s is perfectly fine, for starting small, and is the max internet around here, well was but last year we got google optic and its now 1gb/s but that's besides the point... if he researches and makes a custom built desktop 1300$ should be enough, not many places offer more then 100mb/s in today's world especially if they live in the outer world, if he was serious and actually had more to spend in the first place he wouldnt be asking for people to give him a free server as he does here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/servers/minecraft-server-hosting/hosting-requests/2602768-looking-for-a-free-dedicated-server-read-below which i spend my money on him and he says "i cant connect to it" and gives up and continues asking for another hoster, which in my opinion is rude and he is just trolling.
Well, if you are intending to run a serious business you should provision your network and hardware for growth. Fifty meg would be OK for a couple clients, but designing your business plan around only being able to service a handful of clients would be silly. Nobody likes a laggy server, so overselling your infrastructure would just lead to client turnover. A technology based business using a home internet connection and a desktop PC is not a serious business. There are tons of colo providers that offer much more than 100 meg, plus you have the added benefit of an SLA which a home internet connection will not have - and that's essential for business.
PS, yea, I didn't notice that thread. Three days ago he has $200 and wants to start a business. Twelve hours ago he is broke and wants a free dedicated server. Pretty safe to say we aren't dealing with a future entrepreneur here lol.
I completely agree if you are looking at it that way, but this is minecraft forums, I look at it as kids not taking it to seriously and a lot of people start in their dad's/mom's basements pre se; especially look at J.K. Rowling she was on welfare when she was writing the Harry Potter books. Amazing what humans can accomplish when they are determined and do not give up on their goals, and or dreams.
What they would be doing is starting with business class internet, which is 90 dollars for the basic setup
a DBA is free, but they would want a website, if they have a unique name a website is .99 cents/a year
A good server setup would be around 3,000$
Advertising, if you want to be on front page of yahoo.com not including the search it is 450,000$, Youtube is the same, facebook during logout is 100,000$...
Advertising for a poor man, in movie ad's for hulu is 30$
Customer support is average of 13.01$ an hour
That is 3,213.01 just to set up,
monthly is about 1,527.20$ including paying two customer support agents, but you need more then that for minecraft, tech, billing, multicraft itself, and a plugin developer for starters....
lets add that into it...
multicraft 5$ monthly, and a 50$ installation fee
Average tech guy gets about 15$ an hour
Average data entry job/billing is 14$ an hour[Getting all of these from google btw]
Total:
Edit: i decided to actually do the math, this is a small online business setup and monthly cost
if you are planing to rent a place out it will be a lot more then what it is now:
Monthly does not include things like server failure and needing to buy parts, it only includes if everything works perfectly
this price gives you two plugin developers, billing, two people in customer support replying to emails etc. and the lowest advertising available at 30$ a month.
This is probably the lowest you can get away with if you are serious about doing a hosting company; Goodluck to anyone going that route
but then you have what i was talking about the setup for a poor man that lives in his mom's basement, requires a custom built computer that is dedicated to being a server at about 1,300$, multicraft which as stated above is 50$ for the installation fee and 5$ a month a website which is .99 cents for the first year, the average house hold will have 30mb/s internet, if your mom and dad are geeks they will have non-business class internet at 50mb/s on average which will allow you to have a few 5 - 15 servers depending on their size; and let's say only you want to do everything, you do not have a job or school and no life and understand how to build a website, how to setup customer support and so on... you still need to advertise which 30$ is being very nice but is possible to find a few banners around that price to advertise your hosting company
startup: 1,500$[rounded]
monthly: ~500$[rounded]
Why 500$? you do the math and are like i get 40$ from what you said... 500$ cause a computer breaks, fries, you would need to get it repaired quickly to keep your business going; and unforeseen things happen, i would save at least that much a month in general; plus at the end of the year you have to do taxes! This will also **** off your parents for constantly limiting the internet connection due to using to much bandwidth, it is not ideal for a business to not use business class internet.
Extras:
Paying someone to make good advertisements for your hosting company
Repair costs
Electric bill costs
Taxes
You have to also be at least 18 to accept any form of money situations do vary; but for an online business you deal with stuff like paypal, and you have to be 18 to have a paypal.
It's cheaper and easier to start out as a reseller from a company such as CloudSouth, they provide the high specs for low prices

What do you consider having funds?
$200

I wouldn't do it... market is pretty saturated...
Psychz Networks - Dedicated Servers, Co-location | PhotonVPS - SSD Cloud | ProtectedCraft - DDoS Protected Minecraft Server
True Layer 7 DDoS Mitigation | BGP Optimized by Noction Intelligent Routing
Tier 4 Datacenter in Los Angeles, CA | Dallas, TX | Ashburn, VA

If you think $200 is proper funding, it just illustrates your total lack of any clue.
Listen to this guy.
