This is a pet peeve of mine. Your instructions are for how to get a free domain name, not an IP! I don't know why so many people here keep calling domain names IPs. They are NOT interchangeable terms.

The only reason I put IP was to get more people to read this. Just like you said, "so many people here keep calling domain names' IPs'"

Yeah, it is different terminology, however I think the mix-up originates from web forms or people asking "What's the IP of the server" and someone responding with "somedomain.net", and so begins years of terminology confusion.
Hey! I'm Joey. I am a Minecraft server expert and I am here to show you how to get a custom IP safely.
First off, you should have port forwarded correctly by now. If you have not, there are a ton of tutorials out there.
Also, you need to know your server's public IP or else you cannot continue.
This tutorial is completely safe and a handful of Minecraft servers already use this.
Step 1:
Go to this website:
FreeDNS
Make a free account and log in.
Step 2:
Click on the "Registry" link on the left of the website.
Choose a suffix you want. I suggest the suffix "mine.bz"
Click the suffix.
Step 3:
A new screen should pop up titled "Add a new subdomain"
Change the settings as follows:
Type: A
Subdomain: <server name with no periods>
Domain: <leave this alone, it should be defaulted to the suffix you chose>
Destination: <put your server IP in IPv4 format here>
TTL: <only supported for premium members, but not really needed>
Wildcard: <leave this as default, not checked>
Step 4:
Once you have answered the CAPTCHA, hit [Save!]
You should be taken to another window with your subdomains.
Once you have done steps 1-4 above,
Congratz! You have now successfully created your own custom IP!
To connect, ask friends to use the IP you created! It should look something like this:
<server name with no periods>.<suffix you chose>
^^The above can be found in Step 3^^
Another example is my old server IP:
j-craft.mine.bz
Don't try to connect to this server, it's been shut down.
Hope you liked this tutorial!
If ya did, vote Yes on the poll above.
