I am wanting to rent out a dedicated server, with at least 16GB of ram. Before anyone asks, I am not going to be starting a fly by hosting company, I have no intention nor do I have the knowledge.
Basically, my friends and I are all chipping in towards this server so we can enjoy multiple game servers and do whatever we feel like using it for. Web development, Game Servers.
My questions;
Is OVH a good place to rent them out? (price wise)
What is a good price for 16GB server?
What processor would suit this best? (If it even has any performance difference)
I would be the ring leader in my group of friends, who would be setting the thing up initially, I know plenty of linux but just wondering can I allocate a certain amount of RAM to each account? Ie each person to get 4GB of RAM maximum?
What other things do I need to be aware of when purchasing a dedicated server. Assuming it runs like a VPS, I should be sweet. But just wondering on the RAM allocation to accounts.
1. Price wise OVH isn't terrible. But I wouldn't recommend them.
2. $55/mo or somewhere in that range
3. I use Dual Xeon L5520's with 16 GB of ram it runs well. But you could definitely upgrade that processor
I honestly don't know if you can do this but you can look it up.
I would make sure you have a reliable provider and I would confirm that the company actually OWNS their hardware as some companies charge you a load then go and pay ovh for a cheap server but you could go directly to ovh pay way less for the same server. Possibly looking for a Datacenter that sells servers.

OVH is ok for just standard hosting nothing fancy and their support sucks. I have a server from datashack.net and I am renting an 16GB for $35/m from them. Datashack has good support (ticket only) however their network goes down atleast 2 times a month for about 1 minute. if you want enrtylevel use datashack or ovh. If you want good really good servers check out www.limestonenetworks.com they have amazing servers ((had one) if you call them they can give you a 32GB E3 for $145/m

There support sucks because they offer unmanaged servers. They will fix hardware issues straight away and you dont need to make a ticket about that most the time because of their monitoring system.
I find OVH good, their network is good and doesnt have much(if any) downtime. Price wise OVH is awesome. If you do end up choosing them get a server from their SYS range(http://www.soyoustart.com/us/).You should definitely get a E3 processor if you plan on running game servers.

You forgot to add with ovh soyoustart you cant get extra dedicated ips, only fallover ips. If you require additional ips you must use their enterpirse servers.

Thanks for your response, do you know some reputable places that don't resell?

Do I need extra IPs, I'll only be using it for websites and game servers? What are fallover ips?
Awesome thanks, I live almost the complete opposite side of the world from Europe, do you know any decent hosts who have servers in West Coast of US. Cheers

All of these are companies who own datacenters. The Datashack one was the coolest security wise for me a staff carries a firearm ^.^ makes me think my server would be pretty protected.

You forgot to add datashacks netowork is not as good as secured servers. Datashack will have down time 2-4 times a month for up to 20 minutes. Last month they had issues with their servers and my network was laggy for 24 hours with over 6 down times in 1 day. I lost a lot of clients and ended up closing my company due to the lack of network uptime. I now use datashack for only 4 servers (dedicated) and they seem fine. I am getting 16gb for $35/m

Honestly if I am paying $35/m for 16 GB of ram I can live with 60 min of downtime a month. But that's my opinion.

I personally recommend this host for all my server needs. Their ram is great, CPU is great, the network is fantastic and their DDOS protection is better than any other.
A server under this company for 16GB of ram would cost $100/m.
Comes with everything you could need for a minecraft server. Or a couple!
I personally recommend a Intel E3-1230V2, you dont need much more than that unless you are running a whole ton of servers on the same dedicated server.
4GB per person would work out fantastic if you have 4 people in your "ring" . That is enough to run a good server for a ton of people on each.
Also, VPS's do not compare to the power a dedicated server can provide. VPSs can also be very expensive when you get a ton of ram.
I recommend sticking with a Dedicated server.
