To be honest, I am kind of upset that this update was a month late. That is a pretty long time to be behind. It's just unprofessional compared to some other developers who work on games that also update frequently and have their content released on-time. Yes, I realize that Minecraft is an indie game and Mojang may not have every resource available to do whatever they want. But, Mojang said that they wanted to do updates about every two months, so promising that and then not delivering will of course be disappointing. I don't think that they're getting "lazy," it's just that they need to work better and do what they said they would do.
well, one reason is Jeb got married and dinnerbone was the only one working
well, one reason is Jeb got married and dinnerbone was the only one working
That is the most ridiculous excuse for an entire company to stop working and just have one guy continue to work. A month late? Really? Just because Jeb got married, the entire update was delayed by a whole month? That to me does indeed show them to be irresponsible and unprofessional. They need to set aside their play time and get to work when they need to, especially when they make a promise to everyone. It's extremely frustrating how they aren't doing work they said they would.
Now I know I am not a game developer and don't have the skills to do what Mojang employees do, but when I have work to do or I promise to get something done, I'm going to make sure I do it. Mojang doesn't seem to think the same. If they have a lot of work to do, wouldn't they set aside more time to do it instead of taking more time off? I've never heard of another gaming company doing anything like that, especially for such a reason.
And now with the 1.6 pre-release up today, we've learned that 1.6 won't be officially released until July 1st, which is next week, when it was promised this week. This is the type of thing I'm talking about. There are constant delays one after another, and still tons of bugs and work that should have been done. Mojang doesn't seem to have very high standards of work ethic.
In my honest opinion, I think that the updates are coming out really slow. Over the course of a year, there have only been 3 updates for this javascript game. And now people are predicting that 1.5 is near, which is a shame, since the amount of content in this update, could have been made in a week by this community.
dude ur so wrong do you know how hard it is to code and program games and updates like that > It's really hard so don't even think for a second that mojang is getting lazy, why don't u try to make a video game as awesome as minecraft.
With the enormous cash cow that Minecraft is, why are only six/seven people working on it?
That's actually something I'd like to know to, not that I have a problem with it.
Maybe it's because Mojang is like a group of closely knit friends, so they only let in people they know will fit in?
(Kind of like how the mindcrack server is run)

1.6 did come out today stop complaining. Its the pre but its still 1.6. They said they would TRY for May but they said they weren't sure. It was only around 2 months since last update sheesh. And you know what? They don't need to work all the time. They have no rules saying that. They have lives. They are people too. They don't have to be coding 24/7. So I think you should get you life straightened out. Get rid of those selfish, whiny, un-appreciative traits you have and you might be tolerable. Right now, YOUR the un-professional one.
1) It's the pre-release, not the official 1.6. I have already said this, so there's no point in telling it to me. Anyway, the point is that 1.6 is not completely done and out to the entire MC community yet. We were promised the release (not the pre-release, Mojang specifically said the update will be released) this week, which they have failed to do. Once again, we're given another delay.
2) At the time of Minecon last year, Mojang said they wanted to do themed updates about every two months. The first of these was supposed to be the Redstone Update, which was going to be released in January, but was delayed by a month with Mojang setting a date for the pre-release on February 28, 2013, but then it was even further delayed, with the pre-release being March 7 and the official release being March 13. That is already several very long delays for an update. Two months from March is May, we did not get 1.6 in May. It is now set for July, about a month and half after their goal date. I've never seen another company be so far behind. Mojang obviously isn't getting too much work done, or they need to hire more people to finish on time.
3) "It was only around 2 months since last update sheesh." Mojang made a promise. Mojang failed to keep that promise. Mojang did not finish their work on time, and has had multiple delays for the past two updates. My biggest problem is that they tell us they will accomplish something, but they never do and take a long time after to get it done. They shouldn't be telling us the update will be out at a certain time if they take way too long to get their work done. They set that goal for themselves, and told everyone they would do it, and it's evident they did not manage to do the task. That is what is upsetting.
4) There is a difference between work and personal life. I am not concerned with their everyday lives. Millions of people are hard-working in their jobs, manage to get their work done, and juggle their personal lives in there too. Employees of Mojang chose to work in this field, they are getting paid to do it, so it is their obligation to get their work done, especially when they tell everyone they will do it. Maybe one day when you are an adult and have a job or maybe even when you are in college or high school, you'll realize that getting your work done is an important thing to do.
5) I paid for this game, I use Mojang's product, I am one of their customers. If I am dissatisfied with their company or product, I have every right to complain about it. I don't care what you have to say, I paid for their product and I use it, if I don't like something about their company or what they put out, I'm going to say it.
6) Capitalizing words (such as "try" and "your") are not effective ways of using emphasis in your argument. You also misspelled "you're." And calling me "selfish, whiny, un-appreciative" is not unprofessional as well? Those are just personal insults. Only talk to me if you're willing to discuss things about Mojang and Minecraft relevant to this topic.
If you want to check any of the information in this post about the release dates and what Mojang actually said, you can check the sites below. Also, unless you provide other sources proving that Mojang said something else later on, I'm going to assume things you said such as "They said they would TRY for May but they said they weren't sure," are false, because basing off the things I've read, they were indeed planning for updates every two months (which would make the release be in May).
They aren't getting lazy, they are just running out of ideas. There's only so much they can add to the game before they start tweaking things and making them worse(food, boats *cough cough*).
In less than 20 minutes, you can brainstorm a thousand possible ideas, of which hundreds are possible for a company with this much capital.
1. Proper NPC's
4. Economy system (not the we have currently)
5. Questing
7. Roads
etc...
Edit: Curse words are censored now. Wow....
Go play some skyrim. Not everything should be in minecraft.
We don't need anymore animals, much less tamed ones, If you want animals, download mo'creatures.
There are servers which have economy systems, you just have to find the right server. If you want to do that in singleplayer... Get a RPG like skyrim.
Questing, Again an RPG, if you want to do that play another game or go on a server that has quests (Yes, they exist).
More shapes, We don't need more shapes, minecraft is made of blocks/cubes/squares/large pixels. It has been and always will be.
Roads, Stop being lazy and build your own road.
Proper trading, again, this isn't a RPG, it's a sandbox game.
These ideas are completely stupid. There is only so much they can add before it starts to become another one of those "Complete this quest, get money, complete another quest, get money" games.
They should be working on quality updates, not quantity updates.
I must say this thread is very interesting, but it lacks in practical experience. Someone whose been there, done that.
What I've been reading has been people who are looking through the window, seeing someone sitting on a couch, and concluding that person MUST be doing something other than working. Or seeing the lights off and concluding no one's home. Ad infinitum.
This is the same for any business, online or off-line. You truly can't know what's really going on unless you are a part of what's going on. That is, you can't know how things are being run, administered, etc. unless you work for that business. And unless you are part of the business, you can't under why, or how, promises can't or couldn't be kept.
From experience in another field, I know the ins and outs of why things could or could not get, done. I worked in that field for 34 years. I know that field from the inside. Yet there were those who "looked" in through the window and concluded certain things that were totally false. Much of what's being said here is based on "looking" through the window.
Yes, statements were made, promises were made, and consumers expected the company to keep their promises. But promises assume (break this word down and it pertains to all at some point) things will proceed as they have. It doesn't take into account the sudden things that crop up within every business that can't be foretold, such as Murphy rearing his head from time to time spoiling well laid plans.. It assumes many things that oft times come crashing down when least expected. And it doesn't take into account changes in the law that may greatly impact the structure of the business. Not to mention what the business can and can not say to the public.
And I must point out one other point, among many. This is only a game, an entertainment, a way to enjoy yourself when time permits. It isn't a car that will kill the occupants if any part is faulty, it isn't an appliance which can do the same if faulty. You don't eat it, drink it, or ingest it in any way, so the faults it has are not life threatening. It is ONLY a game, a marvelous game, but none the less, a game. Updates/upgrades/improvements/etc. are not going to pose a threat to your life, so why get so upset? If you encounter errors, report them in the prescribed manner. It's a game, you should be enjoying yourself with it, maybe even help someone who needs something to help them get through the day. Because I can tell you one thing, if you get overly upset by something a business does or does not do for a game, then you have your priorities misaligned. Because after all, it's only a game. Something while nice to play, something that should not send a person over the moon.

As players of Minecraft who've paid for the game and use it, we are customers of Mojang, not employees. So of course, as none of us here work for Mojang, we don't know the inner workings of their company or their day to day activities. I understand that Mojang may have troubles here and there, but having several delays, a couple of them lasting well over a month, begins to get past a reasonable point. It goes from understanding their troubles and into an area of question and disappointment. Why is it taking them so long? Why did they tell us one thing they would do, but they did not accomplish it? Multiple times? This isn't just a one-time thing, this has happened over and over again. It gets aggravating.
Unfortunately as customers and not employees of Mojang, we have very few ways of knowing what goes on and such, and this can be said for almost any company. However, that doesn't excuse the fact that when we are told of something, we expect it to be delivered. Some faults can be forgiven, but in this case of Mojang, it's getting to be over the line. It's at the point where consumers are now upset. A golden rule of business is to keep your costumers and/or your fan base happy, because without them, you'd have no profit and your business would crumble. Mojang is not sticking to this rule, which they really should lest more and more Minecraft players become discontent. That's just good costumer service. If you don't have it, obviously you're going to get some complaints.
I enjoy playing Minecraft. I want to enjoy Mojang's game. That's why I bought it. I can't enjoy it if they don't fix bugs by getting the updates out, give us new content every once in a while, or by not getting work done on time repeatedly. This isn't something I'm "overly upset" about. You can refer back to my original post in this topic where I state my opinion, starting with "To be honest, I am kind of upset that this update was a month late." That's far from being "overly upset." Though it does get somewhat annoying when other people post back unintelligent responses or weak excuses (not including your's).
@chinchillas48: The "You/you" used in my previous post was a general "You/you" and not specific, that I would never do. Through long and painful trials I've learned, and come to fully accept, we all have our opinions and are allowed to state them as long as they are reasonable and do not attack another simply for stating theirs.
I've also come to realize life is too short to get upset because someone didn't accomplish something by a date or time specified. As long as it's not life threatening. And especially if it's a game. In the real world field I mentioned in my previous post, I heard promises offered many times that were never fulfilled but it didn't prevent me from getting my work done. Same with a game, if it doesn't keep a person from enjoying what they have.
Yes, it is annoying when a bug is encountered, reported, promises of a fix are announced, and nothing happens at the appointed time. But it's no skin off my nose if the company who released the game doesn't, or can't, fix the bug. If it's bad enough I'll simply move on to something else, regardless if I really like the game. I no longer get upset if I encounter a problem with a game. I simply report it to the company I bought the game from and wait for their reply. If no reply arrives, I send another to make sure the first was received; a week or two may pass between reports. But I don't get upset, it isn't worth the trouble.
Yes it is annoying when an announcement is made for a certain release to take place and it isn't met, but that doesn't mean it won't eventually happen. As I stated in my previous post, I had 34 years in a specific field, and am very familiar with announcements being made and nothing happening. But as I said, it didn't keep me from getting my work done. And an announcement about a release for Minecraft won't keep me from enjoying it until the release is made public.
Life is full of announcements where time frames are given and broken, it happens. The trick is to determine just how important something is and whether it's important enough to complain about. In my mind, Minecraft, or any game, isn't important enough to get worked up over if commitments aren't met. It isn't worth my efforts. Actually I'd prefer a company to release something a bit late than release a piece of junk that ends up having more patches than a balloon popped by a pin. But that's just me, and my past experiences.
The amount of content that Mojang has released in recent updates is pretty impressive, honestly. And I don't want them releasing the updates too fast, either. It's best to have time to acclimate yourself and familiarize yourself with the changes. There's also been a lot of admittedly long-overdue technical work going on behind the scenes. 1.6 was a little bit light on content compared to the previous updates, honestly, but from a technical standpoint it's accomplished a lot of very good things, so I'm not going to complain. And the content we did get was awesome. Quality over quantity.
I have some friends that have recently picked up the game again after having not played it for months and they're surprised at the amount of new content that the game has.
I'm really surprised that so many people here are complaining about it. Or maybe not. I always regret coming to these types of threads.

I highlighted in your post the main reason I don't mind waiting on software releases, even if a date or time is given. Too many times in the past I've encountered software that was rushed being released simply because date and time was given, only to have several patches also released to fix problems with the software. I'm in agreement with you in that I'd rather wait on a quality product being released late, than have quantity released that requires patch after patch, etc.

This is exactly what I'm wondering. Why don't they hire more employees if they have so much work to do? They obviously do have enough money.

3) "It was only around 2 months since last update sheesh." Mojang made a promise. Mojang failed to keep that promise.
If you want to be sure that I read your reply then quote me.
