In my honest opinion, I think that the updates are coming out really slow. Over the course of a year, there have only been 3 updates for this javascript game. And now people are predicting that 1.5 is near, which is a shame, since the amount of content in this update, could have been made in a week by this community.
People are predicting that 1.5 will come out soon because it will come out soon. I don't know what was actually said, but Mojang said that will be released in January (not valid anymore) or February.
Assuming 1.5 releases within the next few weeks, that'll be 5 updates over the course of 13 months. Averaged that's an update every 2.6 months. Each update accomplished something, especially 1.2.5 (increased height and jungle biomes) and 1.3 (the merge). 1.5 is coming along to fix the lighting bugs and polish up redstone.
I agree that Mojang does seemingly work slow on content compared to many modders, but considering I get these updates for free I'm in no position to complain.
Mojang isn't getting lazy they're just putting a lot of stuff in the updates and releasing a lot of snapshots to get bugs fixed so they won't have to fix the bugs once the update is out.

Mojang is not getting lazy.
Coding things into the game properly can take a lot of thinking and problem solving. Mojang has been primarily fixing bugs within the past few updates, which I'm sure is a challenge of its own degree. You just have to understand that adding too many features and not fixing enough bugs would be a very bad thing.

They aren't lazy, i personally feel a lack of single-player content lately. If you are a "noob" player there really isn't anything good in the upcoming update. They need to add more player items and what-not.
Too slow? They update quite frequently, and I'm surprised that they're not completely sick of it. You should be grateful they update the game at all (Not to sound rude)
Making a mod and updating the core game are two very different things. Also, the game is still getting updated a lot. Be glad they didn't stop once it hit 1.0.0
Do you expect Mojang to be a super fast cyborg that can add 2000 features in 50 minutes? The Mojang Team are just like us, human. They need a rest. Also do you know how much time they had to code? Can you run a company that can make good quality features within 2 minutes? Always remember, Quality is more important than Quantity.
It's true that they are letting up on the updates. A while ago I heard that Notch was moving on to a new project and he left it to others to continue updates for Minecraft. That's probably why
