Hello minecraft fans . Today I will be discussing the future update, 1.8, which will be released in may. In this update, Mojang will be adding name changes. This will change the player id system.
"This version provides complete support for identifying players through unique IDs and not by names, so that no matter what a player is called they will remain banned/whitelisted/oped/etc on servers."
Many people dont realize the bad side to this. as said by evilseph, the creator of bukkit.
"At the beginning of the year Mojang started dropping hints of their plan to switch from a name based accounts system to a universally unique identifier (UUID) based accounts system, ultimately moving towards allowing people to change their Minecraft name. With much of Minecraft currently relying on a name based accounts system (bans, whitelist, ops to name a few) along with plugins using names to keep track of players (permissions, ownership, protections), this change has a high potential to break both plugins and servers if server admins and developers are not prepared for it"
See that? many people forget that this will compromise and break nearly TWO THIRDS of plugins is my estimate. Why would mojang do such a thing? here is my theory:
As everyone knows, MC Realms is starting to go global. It has already hit the uk and many other countries around it. Many see realms as a good thing, but if you watch this video by caveman films:
He tries to make it sound positive, but the truth is its mojang's crap attempt at making a little extra money. So what does this have to do with the new name system? I will tell you
My theory is that mojang is trying to screw over server owners, so they cancel. Then, they buy realms servers, and since they are owned by mojang, they can make a pretty penny. Worst of all, The server can NOT have the following
MODS PLUGINS
MORE TO COME
Now you see why realms is a bad thing? share this post with your friends
Realms is still in it's early stages. It will have plugins and mods when the API comes. And if you don't know by now, every update breaks plugins and mods. Get used to it.
If the player was smart, before changing their name, they would check with the server(s) they like to play on if it's safe to change their name, or what issues they might have.
I'm sure most plugins will be updated to work with the new UUID, some older ones, that work after many many versions, will require an update, or none at all.
However, if you don't use a ban plugin, I could see there being a slight issue, but it would not be a permanent issue in the end. Either the people won't remember you and join, or just need a re-ban.
For realms, it's a small fee. You can't go public without inviting people, so no real way to entice people to donate/give money. If you really wanted to add features with a small server setup like this, use command blocks.
Those conspiracy theories are amusing but ultimately just that; conspiracy theories. Mojang are simply implementing one of the most requested features since the game first came out, mods will have to be rewritten from scratch any ways to make use of the upcoming plugin interface which also happens to be among the most requested game features.
1. All current mods work by injecting code and are unsupported; anyone with any brains expects updates to break them
2. Modders have had months of warning that UUIDs were coming
3. Mojang is rolling in cash right now, realms is not about making a quick buck, it is about providing a long term revenue stream while making sure users have a supported option for hosted servers.
4. Realms will only provide very basic server support and will provide very little competition for existing custom servers
This is why they released 1.7.6-1.7.8. They added absolutely NO features, except for name changing support. This will give time for servers and plugins to update without feeling as if they are "missing out".
The vanilla game comes first, mods should have to adapt around it. And as kwerti said, they are giving mod makers plenty of time to update their mods. So feel free to take the tin foil off.

"Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best."
Wow, another thread where people are complaining at Mojang about updating their game and making it better. Awesome. Guys, as many have said here...Minecraft comes first, mods second. In addition, this update to UUIDs is actually MORE useful to plugins in the long term as it will allow you to have your permission system based on UUID and then if the player decides to change their name, their permissions stay. If they were to just change a player's name, they'd get around the permission system by doing so, currently.
Sure, this means that existing servers need to do a overhaul on their stuff. Its not like your plugins couldn't use both in the interim. They could read the name of the user as well as their UUID. That would allow the system to update with a UUID for further use, without breaking anything. It just means that the plugins need to update themselves.
Mojang is working towards making their own Plugin system, guys. This means changes, and changes have generally always required updating mods/plugins. Perhaps once Mojang's own system is in place, that won't be an issue as much anymore.
All in all these changes are actually "good". They aren't the end of the world.
Fear of change is kind of hardwired into our brain. The results of millions of years of evolution from amoeba to humano sapiens egocentris. So yeah, basically ANY change even the best ones will usually cause an oversized backlash of complaints.

Mojang said every player will have an id which means if they get banned and they change their name, the server will remember the id and you still will be banned.

Pretty much. As a server owner, I can say that when it came out it was a bit buggy, though, since updated craftbukkit to #3058+ it works really well. And most plugins aren't breaking too much (even if they are, it's not that hard to update).

Yup, the actual impact on my own server has been fairly trivial aside from having to tweak my permissions settings a bit. Then again I don't run 100+ mods like a lot of the other servers I see out there.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
My head hurts looking at all of this. My world guard is bugging out bad, spigot told me to delete banned-players.txt and ops.txt files and now I do not know where my 6000 bans went. Hopefully Mcbans picked up on the local ebans as well as the regular bans. They seems to be coming out with plugins to fetch a players UUID on bukkit...I am a bit lost as to how to go forward with the preparation for 1.8. I have 13 worlds in which one of them, protection stones and world guard is not working at all. Yesterday I had to reprotect spawn which is about 5000 by 5000...like I said, this is giving me a head ache. I am only doing this for the kids, I am a grandmother running a server with free ranks...we survived the 1.7 updated which was plenty to deal with, but this? Now I am not so sure. :\
OK, here is the thing, SERVER OWNERS ARE NOT GOING TO CANCEL, and, regardless, MINECRAFT REALMS IS NOT DESIGNED FOR THEM. Realms is made for small family/friends servers that don't want the bells and whistles of Bukkit, and just want an easy way to manage their players, so, Mojang making money, a moot point.
To those with complications updating to 1.7.9, just wait it out. The changes that 1.7.9 helps adjust to aren't here and won't be here until 1.8, so, spend this time now to get things READY, because, otherwise, you will mess up in the end and cause a lot of trouble for yourself.
If your players don't know how to downgrade, it isn't too hard, just do a few screencaps of making a new profile and put it on your server's website (or community forums, or subreddit, or whatever you use)
Finally, ignorance is NOT bliss, keep up to date with what Mojang is doing, I have emails that I sent out months in advance warning people of this change and documenting how to adjust, official documentation is available and I think the newest Bukkit builds are also in support of 1.7.9 and username->UUID translation, so, plugins should update shortly. zPermissions, for example, already has a beta build with support for UUID's.
I thought that any players banned by their name will be banned by their UUID?
Pretty sure I read this somewhere. Anyways, even if you have to redo bans, this is why they're releasing updates that support the new system, but don't allow players to use it for their names yet.

Dinnerbone posted a tweet back in March saying that "all whitelists, bans, ops, etc will be changed to be UUID based." So, player A may be banned from a server, but even if he changes his name to B, he would still be banned.
Don't worry, as this is far from the present I'm sure Mojang will get everything sorted out before it's release.
As for the white listing, name changing could prove to become a major issue for these kinds of servers. But until 1.8 actually comes out, there is little we can do about it.
