I think we should talk about fixing the terrain itself before adding in new biomes. Adding new biomes will actually just create more problems instead of fix them. You can always expect forests to look like one way, and deserts to look like another. They're too definite. Mojang tried fixing this problem by adding forests hills and desert hills, but they didn't help because they were too definite too. If they add more biomes, it will only seem that they added more 'variation' for the first few weeks because they're new to the eyes, but after a while you'll get tired of seeing the same thing again and again and again. "Hey that spot looks nice... Hey that spot looks nice too. Oh wait, that looks the same as the other one... And that one too..." The problem isn't that we're lacking new biomes, the problem is that we're lacking variation. And it's because of how the terrain is generated - technical biomes. Forests will have this height, this many tall grass, and this many trees per chunk. Deserts will have sand instead of grass and dirt, and have this many cacti per chunk. It wasn't always like that. Back in pre-1.8, we had the temperature system. If the temperature is this, the color of the grass will look like this and have trees like these. The height was not fixed to biomes either, they were fixed to the terrain. There were no "forest hills" and "desert hills" because we didn't need them. Mountains could generate basically everywhere and span between different biomes, instead of just having them in only ______ hills. That adds A LOT of variation alone. Of course there shouldn't be mountains everywhere, and there weren't, contradictory to what anti-pre-1.8 terrain people believe. There were flat land in forests too. Savannas and plains were also flat like they should be. We don't need new biomes, we need to go back to the old system and start from there. Will it take a lot of work? Yes. Will it be worth it? Absolutely.
TL;DR: no TL;DR, read the whole thing to really understand what I mean.
I think you'll find that's a valley. Use Google images, I'm sure you'll see the difference. Still, a mesa or two would be nice to see and would somewhat reduce the need for chopping the tops of mountains to get a decent sized bit of land for building anything with a larger footprint than a shack or tower.

I looked it up, beautiful terrain. The picture you have there is of Zion Canyon as taken from Angel's Landing (which is not a mesa), though I'm sure the nearby aptly named Checkerboard Mesa almost certainly is. Still, it would be nice to see any of this type of terrain in Minecraft.

your right, mybad. and i hope one day we can have something like this in the game. people keep saying that this terrain sucks, but it does not. I remember when 1.8 came out and everyone praised notch for it, and rightfully so. but it needs more variety in the biome that we have. the current biome are great and all there is just to few

I think as many people want new/better terrain/Biomes, as wanted (and were expecting) new mobs in 1.6, getting what we want doesn't always seem to pay off.
Maybe with seasons we'll get blossom during spring, and yellow, red, and orange leaves in autumn. Changes like this, and maybe a new Biome or two would really change things up. A little more height allowance/variation would be nice too.
Hopefully seasons will do more than change the length of night and day, but whatever it will entail I expect Dinnerbone will be working on this for 1.7. It would be awesome if the climate/temperature system could be reintroduced while he's at it.
Anyone at Mojang..if you are listening to us please, at least look at them, if nothing else. Also, I wish to make a plea - Take a nice, long break from updating Minecraft for a while and instead start restoring old Minecraft jars including Survival Test. I want to explain my standing and I am sure many people can agree on this, the potential for greatness is right there, just go for it. I know a lot of veteran players who would appreciate the ability to downgrade without a tool, server creators and mod makers to not have to worry about updating and map makers being able to work in any environment. This way, everyone can be happy, old and new players alike.
The new launcher has the ability to hold those jars and all you need to do is host a server where the files are stored. I am more than willing to pay whatever I've got towards making this a reality. I want to live Alpha worlds, hang out with friends in Beta servers and see entire creations be made in each version as well was the latest. I am not trying to preach "Alpha was better," I do not want that. My vision is for that sole ability to choose your version to be a reality.
I LOVE to do digital archaeology. Going back in time is one of the greatest feelings I have. I don't care about graphics, I want to have fun. The new updates are too easy for me because I've been here for a while, but that is nobody's fault but mine. In addition, I think that stopping the weekly snapshots is somewhat annoying. We are not that desperate for an update (well, I'm not anyway) and I'm sure you guys could use some time off, rest your creative minds and simply give us the ability to roam where we wish, creating the ultimate sandbox game.
...also...could you maybe add it so we can get a different icon for the file? I'm a bit tired of the grass and I like the crafting table...and maybe a better GUI for the launcher?
I really want dinnerbone to look at his seasons idea. Anyone else?
I would absolutely love seasons, but I think that should be an optional feature if they ever implement it. I don't care wheter or not it is, still a cool thing to have.

So instead of fixing the performance issues they're going to just pile more stuff on top?
I love Minecraft but when the first answer to lag posts is "turn your graphics to etch-a-sketch mode" then there are more important issues besides new biomes and items.

You should also (if you haven't already) install 64 bit java, that helped my Minecraft performance a lot.

Probably would have a gamerule, like or something like that.
