Underground water table and epic open caverns would be nice.
we have plenty of long twisting caves and tunnels, but then to have it open into a vast cavern would be nice.
Stalagmites and stalactites would be nice too.
Im still waiting for stained glass though.
No one can claim the terrain generation is perfect. Everything can be improved, and improvement is good.
Personally, while I think a lot could be added to terrain generation, I favor a terrain update more for the sake of removing the topic from conversation. It's frustrating that so many people are so fixated on a terrain update that it spills into every third topic like the plague.
If an idea is spilling into every third topic then clearly it's something that a large portion of the Minecraft community want. Now I understand that it may be frustrating for some to see these topics everywhere, but the fact is that this isn't causing any harm, and anyone who doesn't want to read about a terrain update doesn't have to, simply skip over those threads. But for those of us who do want to share our ideas and opinions on a matter that is obviously of much interest, there's places like here.
Sadly, no one will get exactly what they imagine. The topic won't be removed from conversation even after they do a terrain update. And I'll still have to read complaint after complaint from people who can't just embrace the game as-is and be excited for whatever direction Mojang leads it, because they do a very good job of it.
Now I do agree that it's inevitable no one will get exactly what they imagine, and that this topic isn't likely to go away even if they do do a terrain update, but this game is one that's constantly changing and moving forwards, and the community wants to be a part of that by having their say, and the fact that we can do that is what makes this game so great. And to be clear, this thread is not for all the complainers and haters, it's intended for those who simply wish to show their opinion and/or suggestions. Also, the fact that we're discussing what we'd like to see in the future for this game doesn't mean we don't enjoy the game as it is, and I'm sure that I, at least, (as well as many, many others), will be excited for any updates that Mojang creates and will be happy with whatever direction they take the game in, because they do indeed do a great job. But nonetheless, we still wish to put our ideas out there, to hopefully contribute to that future of the game.
BTW, this post isn't intended to start an argument or anything, I just wanted to make it clear that this isn't a complainers thread.
I would favor it, if they make the old terrain a "classic" world feature, so many seeds don't get ruined.
That is another feature that'd make a terrain update suit many more people. I.e. those who want new terrain generation could get it, while those who enjoy it the way it is now (or those who have great worlds/seeds from the current world gen) would be happy as well.
A rightful place to have an argument on terrain. Thank you for posting this appropriately.
Yes, I think that a terrain update would be bloody awesome. New biomes, new underwater/ground content, and new structures will be welcomed with open arms by me.
However, I don't believe that the terrain is a priority in the slightest. Yes, it will make for an awesome update, but it shouldn't be placed high on the to-do list while there's other areas that could use improvement more than terrain - such as difficulty. The game needs to have its difficulty more balanced, in my humble opinion. As great as the game is now, it's definitely not the same survivalist game it was back in Beta.
I don't know if any of you people have noticed this, but as the game progressed, people slowly became less focused on survival aspects of the game (do you ever see aboveground mob lures and cactus walls anymore?), and more focused on the building aspect of the game. This was heavily induced by new features that were added (new items, the hunger bar, and combat mechanic updates). New blocks allowed for building to be encouraged, and the hunger bar introduced an extreme decrease in difficulty for players, as the player's health would increase by itself whenever the player was almost full. This wouldn't have affected the game as much as it did if there wasn't tons of new food added to the game, I feel - also the implementation of stackable food. But finally, one of the most obvious contributors to the new easement: the combat mechanic updates. Armor was buffed greatly, and the new blocking allowed for mob/player related damage to be halved, and don't even get me started on what enchantments did. This made the need to survive much less of a necessity, compared to what it once was. The new thing that people strove to do was one of two things: Build or invent. Building has been with Minecraft since day one, and inventing was introduced the same time as redstone was. But back in Beta, building and inventing was a bit of a last resort that you managed to do once you truly conquered the stage of survival. Once you were able to do as you like without much worry, you basically conquered Minecraft. Today, the stage of survival is surpassed even by the most newbie of players. Everyone is at the stage of building and inventing as they please.
Now, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I just feel that building and inventing shouldn't be so easily accessable in survival. The game needs to be made harder so that conquering the survival stage isn't just a stepping stone.
So, after that rant, I'll conclude with a brief summary to sum up my point (and for the TL;DR): as excited as I would be for a terrain update, the game needs to have a "survival update" first, in which the aspect of survival needs to be expanded upon and made as difficult as it was back in Beta.

Fair enough. Can't say I disagree with your points about the difficulty of the game, but I still believe a terrain update is slightly higher on my list of priorities. I think a 'survivalist' update could be another good addition to the game in the future, but I'd like the terrain to be sorted out first. That said, Mojang's themed updates tend to involve other smaller changes as well and they do seem to be increasing the difficulty a little bit with each major update, so one could say that that's at least heading in the right direction.
The only thing I really miss about the old (like in/infdev) terrain generation is flooded caves. And I don't mean the underground pools that have 1 or 2 block deep water in them, but entire flooded tunnels. I also miss water that spawned on top of lava without it being obsidian -- made me think of it as a natural hot spring, but I wouldn't expect that to return.

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

Those were all bugs And water wasn't supposed to be flooded in tunnels that large.
To be fair, I think that having some tunnels be completely flooded would be a great addition. Just short stretches of tunnel, mind you... Like the tunnel ends with a pool, but within the pool is a fully submerged tunnel of random length, ending with a surfacing pool on the other side. It would make a certain enchantment very useful...
Imagine starting to go through the underwater tunnel, realizing it's too far to traverse without respiration, and drowning at your own hands for your explorer's instincts...
It would just add a lot more flavor to the web of criss-crossing tunnels underground. Cave generation is pretty bland, in my opinion. It would be nice to have more uniquely identifiable landmarks in them, more variety and spice.

It's not about threads that are about terrain. It's about a small group of people who are so obsessed with it that they drag it into every topic with every post they make.
Having threads about it is great and I support the voicing of opinions. The problem is that the people who can't distinguish a "time and place" for it will continue to think it's the most important thing in the game... And get on my nerves by de-railing threads to be about the "glory days" of 1.7.3.

You have to admit some of the commentary is absurd to a hilarious degree. I mean, you can't help but chuckle when people are making threats of personal violence, claiming their entire lives are now ruined, and they are saying the game has become the worst ever because 1.8 and later don't have gravel beaches. I mean, come ON... that would be cool, but let's get a little perspective.

That's why some people say they're "extremists". I think "drama queen" is more fitting for the people in that particular category.
Like I said, no game maker can make everyone happy all of the time every time. This debate will continue forever, even after a terrain update. That's why I abhor the topic. (Not this topic, mind you, but the "topic" of discussion)

I'm totally in favor of a Terrain Update, especially considering not too long ago in the Suggestions forums I made a topic asking for such a thing. I think some aspects of Terrain need altering or fixing, and there is alot of area for improvement and additions. More underground structures, more water related content, and more.
You know what I always thought would be cool is if they added a BUNCH of rare spawning generations, so you would maybe have to travel 3 or so minecraft days to find one. Then you can be like, "oooh I found an abandoned fortress!" And your friend could be like, "Aw cool, I've never found one of those before, have you seen a lighthouse?" So that way there's always more to find.
Also, I am under the opinion that epic mountains should not be confined to a single biome.

Also, I am under the opinion that epic mountains should not be confined to a single biome.
But then they changed it all. Now it's not glitchy. Now it's got biomes. But now, it's got to be really predictable, and that is the problem.
The poll doesn't say much about going back to the old generator; just an option for "i want it to go back" which only got about 7% of the votes.
Sliders
Maybe a new type of generator that customises things like chance for biome, how big mountains are, how big biomes are...
