just wait for lightning to hit the portal. Or build the portal around lava and place a bunch of flammable blocks and presto! a nether portal!
But anyways. Pigs are kinda useless as it is. All they do is drop meat (and are rid able but guess what? Cows drop food. Chicken drop food. Zombies drop food. Zombie pig men drop food. Oak trees drop food. And lets face it. Pigs are hard to control. Turning is a bear. Its hard for them to get up 1 block. I doubt many people even rid pigs. Its an inconvenience. But if horses are added, with what people say they should have, guess what? Pigs will the the useless mob! BURN! YOU HORSE HATERS JUST GOT BURNED! XD
With cows dropping the same amount of food as a pig, and horses being rid able, pigs are the booger in the punch bowl. And dont say "pigs can be ridden and eaten!" yes you are right but, its either one or the other. You cant ride a pork chop and u cant eat a pig that you want to use for riding.
That's the problem. Pigs are becoming redundant. Having carrots as the method of breeding them made it even worse. Do you want pigs to be made impractical? Do you think there should be a mob that's worse than the other mobs in everything? If you don't, your argument is contradicting you. Horses being added will take away the pig's 'final stand', so to speak. Also, what makes you think horse riding will be more easily done than pig riding?
Zeel
There are mods for more mobs. Any one can use them. Try Mo-creatures.
Rowkey
Cows give milk, leather and beef. These are all unique to cows. Unlike having two mobs that do the same thing.
First of all, how do you know that horses are even going to be added? It was just a picture of a horse, there aren't any snapshots with horses in them yet.
Second. Do you know that they will be ridable? No.
Third. If they are ridable, it is likely that they will be faster and more controllable than pigs, setting them apart.
Fourth. Why do you care anyway? If you prefer pigs use pigs, it's not like horses are something that a player is forced to use.
Heck, you could even change the texture of a horse to look more pigish.

You sir understand my mind. Horses are a bit... more mod than Minecraft. Minecraft has very unique things like zombies creepers. What other games have undead enemies upright quadruped green exploding things? Although horses are growing on me. Honestly, I think Minecraft will still be considered unique no matter what Jeb_ adds. Unless he adds guns. Then I would forever call it Mine of Crafting: Block Ops. Hmm... that's an interesting name. Wonder if it's been used?

If you dig into Jeb's instagram, he has an in-game picture of his character riding a horse. It's pretty safe to say horses are involved with 1.6, same goes along with Mojang working with the creator of Mo' Creatures. http://www.oninstagr...285533_32052351
I still have no idea what everyone is complaining about. It's like adding something people have been requesting for years is going to somehow kill the game. It won't. It's like when the Ender Dragon was being added, people thought Minecraft lost uniqueness. When 1.0 finally came out, no one gave a damn about the thing other than how easy it is to fight. In Fact, close to half the features of 1.8-1.0 were complained for taking Minecraft's "uniqueness" away when those updates came out. Today? No one gives a damn.
We haven't even had a snapshot, just a picture of a probably unfinished feature.

The Enderdragon had a purpose. It was not there before. It is not about uniqueness, but the point to something. If we have something (let us call it XYZ) and is not as good as it could be. Would it make sense to make an entirely new thing or optimize XYZ ?

Jyrome fedx, i'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you. I love this game and it's uniqueness as much as you, but i do not feel like horses will ruin it. I'm actually really excited for them to add horses. I'm kinda surprised they haven't added them sooner. In a game with pigs, cows, sheep, chickens and wolves, how would horses stick out or in any way ruin the uniqueness of this wonderful game?
Keep in mind Mojang is from Sweden... Carved wooden horses known as Dalecarlian horses (see here) have actually become a symbol of their country in modern times. A Swedish game, made by a Swedish company inspired by Swedish culture and folk-lore? Can't get much more unique than that =P

We still don't know what purpose horses have compared to pigs. We still don't know if horses will have advantages and disadvantages over pigs. We still don't have a snapshot yet.
And the whole uniqueness thing is a dumb argument being used against horses (Especially this thread's title), I just had the bring it up with examples of what happened the last time that argument was used on a feature.
Also, that "If we have something (let us call it XYZ) and is not as good as it could be. Would it make sense to make an entirely new thing or optimize XYZ ?" has been used in this game before as new things. I'm pretty sure it'll happen again.
Still, we have no idea how Mojang is going to handle the balance between pigs and horses. We have to wait until an official word, or a snapshot.
I'm not so sure I support horses on the notion of being repetitive. What would a horse do? Probably just for riding. Maybe some other sort of powering a mill or something, but that would be an awful lot of changes. Horses are for riding but we already have pigs for riding. Pigs are also for food, but cows are better and cows are differentiated because of leather and milk. On the other hand, maybe leather could be stolen from cows domain (cows seriously need nerfed a bit, probably) and then horses are for riding and leather, differentiating them as a different thing and making the idea better. It's not about the animal being unique. It's about keeping uses unique. Minecraft could also have a plethora of different kinds of swords, but really one is all you actually need.
However, my steed is currently named Hamlet. I can't think of a good name for a horse, except for Horace, but that's lame. No one names their kid Horace, not even horse parents.
What if horses had a unique drop that could open the door to whole new possibilities? Would they then be 'okay'? If I recall correctly, horses in real life are a major sores of fibers for certain kinds of rope. So what if minecraft horses dropped cords that can be crafted into rope which then can be crafted into such things as rope bridges, rope ladders, grappling hooks maybe, and whips--which I think would be a nice medium range weapon addition with more range than a sword but not as much as a bow. Also, hog ties--use them to tie up a pig, pick them up, and move them more easily then with wheat/carrots.
I think I got cancer from reading this. :X
Look, there are two options:
1) Deal with horses
2)Keep on complaining
We don't know what horses are going to be able to do, or how to tame them, if we even can!
Maybe they can add like a disable horses option on the server config or something.
We don't know, so for now all we can do is wait.

I personally think horses are a bit cliché. Pigs should run faster, and carrot sticks should have some more durability, so that they would be more practical as mounts.

Exactly that. Then we wouldn't really need horses. But it seems they are in the game.

There is a feud building, let us not deny it.
Since the confirmation of the horse the pig appreciators now must stand their previously uncontested ground.
The message I am pulling out of this debacle is that Jeb has not been doing his part in making sure Minecraft stays a unique game with a different gaming experience for each player. Most things he adds people debate about. The debate usually ends when one side says "if you do not like what he adds do not use it" This will be impossible for the horse. Even if a player does not chose to use it those who do have an advantage over them, and the Minecraft I know and love does not disadvantage it's players!
Also why add a mob that does not provide an extra use in the game? We already have the faithful pig for all of our transportation needs. Hundreds of games have ridable horses but how many games can you name that have ridable pigs?
Keep Minecraft Unique Please.
Thank yousomeone who speaks for the pigs.
I'd rather have edible sheep dropslamb chopsrather than horses.
Minecraft is unique but primarily not for the reasons you have stated.
Yes, Minecraft's pig riding is unique, but how many games can you ride a mob in? Tons. Think about the ways that Minecraft is truly unique in: you will realize that horses really do not affect those that much.
(On a side note I kind of wish Minecraft wasn't so unique... as in, it had competitors. Think about it: the competition would cause Mojang to pull their act together regarding the subpar updates and whatnot since they would cause Mojang to lose players and therefore money.)

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I personally like choices and variety in a sandbox game like Minecraft instead of restricting to one animal. So horses to me are a welcome addition even if they function exactly the same as pigs, I wouldn't mind them at all. In fact if there are more mobs that can be tamable and ridiable, that would be awesome!
Imagine If I can ride a dino in a day, and pigs the other, and horse another. I could role play as a beast master! This is what sandbox game is about! Being able to do anything I want!

If I don't like swords I don't have to use them. Not using them will put me at a disadvantage. So, yes, if you refuse to use part of the game that gives you a significant advantage, other players who do will have an advantage over you. Not to mention swords aren't unique at all. (Hopefully the Minecraft you know and love has swords in it)

But that's not exactly the point of choice in a sandbox game. If you need something to eat with, do you want to pick between a salad fork or a dinner fork? Or between a fork and a knife? Options shouldn't be cosmetically different, they ought to offer some different sort of functionality. A horse is a pig with a different face. I'd rather have something we don't already have, or maybe just fix the derpy pig mechanics. Minecraft is a game of grand options, not petty ones.
