dinnerbone wins today's round of Internet awesome!
I wonder if things are still light when there's a roof over it but the roof is waaaay up high above. in the past the things with a roof way above them were still light, or patchy.
keep up the AWSM!

I just tried out the new snapshot and generated a new world in creative mode. There are still lightning bugs here and there, not as much as before but its surely not fixed entirely! I found the most in the extreme hills biome.
The problem I have is more about boats, signs, players, paintings and chests flickering and not about bugged textures. All I know about this is that it's caused by some graphics cards not working with the lighting engine correctly. I would just replace my graphics card, but mine is non - replaceable =/.
I've read it. But, Dinnerbone is probably right. There isn't enough time to get a bug-free release of the new lighting, unless he pulls something out of his bum. I hope he doesn't rollback, but if he thinks it need much more work, then I believe him.

Well the bugs are actually fixed, with 2 snags:
1: You have to actually manually update any broken light to fix it.
2: Fixing it or even being in a world with lighting problems causes insane lagg and an eventual crash within short minutes.
If he's shooting for a late October release, then I see no reason why he couldn't fix it all up right. Honestly I want the skylight bug that's plagued maps since 1.1 and all the other light bugs since... well, a long long time... to be finally fixed. I'd rather take one large serious bug over 100 small petty bugs. Bug fixes are bug fixes, but even so.

It's because it slows down chunk loading. You may not see it, but many people will.

Yeah, I had noticed that. When the lighting in 1.3.2 starts the crash the game, chunk loading slows to a near stop. The way Dinnerbone talks about it, it seems to be the same thing causing it then as it is in the snapshots.
[NEW UPDATE] Dinnerbone has had to give up on fixing the black spots produced by world generation for now (for v1.4) due to all the problems the fix created. He hopes to fix that later in the future instead.
However; the Stair and Half-block/slab lighting will remain fixed for v1.4.
* You can still use [This Mod] to deal with the black spots for now though.
** There was no mention of any kind about a new 'lighting engine' being in v1.4.
I'm new here and not sure where every thing is located . This is the only place I found on my problem. I recently bought minecraft about a month ago, (1.4.7). I never had any problems with the game till I updated to 1.5. I know get these huge areas that are pitch black. If I break a block or place a torch it goes away but it's very Annoying to do this when it's all over the world. I backed up my minecraft.jar folder before I updated to 1.5. When I load my old 1.4.7 game back up it has the same problem which I don't remember happening before. I'm running minecraft on an hp laptop, AMD A-10 with 6 gb of ram. I'm getting about 80 TO 90 ps. So iI don't think it's my computer. If someone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it I'm running rei's minimap and opifine. Thank you for any feed back.. Thank you
Dude...You just pumped 6 months old thread -.-
And learn to use Google....
--->The lighting problems have been in the game since 1.8.1...1.5 didn't break anything for you.I hope that this problem will be fixed in the future versions.Maybe 1.6, 1.7, 1.8 , 1.9 or something
I have searched google and really never found a soild anwser ( which is why i came here). I just wanted to make sure it wasnt my computer, because it seems like some people have this problem while some dont. I thought it was strange that i never had the problem before the update. Anyways thank you for your feedback.

There are many possible causes outside of minecraft itself for this. What have you tried to fix it?
Check out this video and see his comments for one possible solution if your issue looks like that:

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

@DinnerboneLooks like we can keep the lighting code; Managed to selectively revert the worldgen portion. Nether is good, but blackspots are back.
Maarten
@Maarten359@Dinnerbonebut.. blackspots were the main reason why you wrote the new lighting code
Nathan Adams
@Dinnerbone@Maarten359Secondary; slabs and stairs were my main reason.
Maarten
@Maarten359@Dinnerboneohw sorry, but are blackspots going to be fixed?
Nathan Adams
@Dinnerbone@Maarten359At some point in the future. I tried for 1.4 (see the last snapshots) but it caused too many other issues.
