Hey guys, as we all know, single player is becoming a "server" technically as sp and mp are merging. Most of us know bukkit, a server sided mod that lets people have plugins on their server which, at the moment, is ONLY for mp. But when they merge, do you think bukkit and plugins will become available for singleplayer also?
Bukkit does a lot more than just be the back end server. The worlds that host 200+ people are not takeing down their bukkit server just because the Mincraft client can do multi player. The client is not able to do that, even after it's merged, it would be asking a lot from the client and computer it's running on. From my understanding this merge is makeing it possible to not have to run a server for yourself and a few others that you might want to invite on to your world. However if your maintaining a large world or keeping things running 24/7, you'll still want a server. And bukkit provides other featchers for large worlds like grief protection, plot management, and advanced building tools.
My bukkit server runs 24/7, has not to many people log in and out (all friends of mine) but they do so at all hours of the day. And I have a dozen or so plugins running on it, 2 different worlds, a neither, sky lands etc. All connected via warp paths and so on. And it resides on a sepperat machine dedicated to being a game server.
Now when they get done with the API, it might very well allow bukkit like plug-ins to run on it. That would be quite kool. But you wanted to run your game world from SP as a MP server you would then have to leave your computer on and running, with you logged in. All the time. Or your friends would have to wait till you logged into the game to connect to your world.
BetterLan is a mod I have had for a while, it's useful if you want to use plugins in Lan which you really don't need internet anyway if you use a laptop.
I can't speak for MineCrak, but I would love that! Yeah, I realize you can just travel away from your base and generally accomplish the same thing, but to me there's a certain likeable quality to having multiple worlds, preferably ones of different types, all linked together via portals. I would have a sea world, my home world full of amazing creations, a sky world for, say, the Zeppelin mod, and maybe a world where I just excavate everything I can, making a massive pit and strip mine. The notion of traveling to other worlds ingame just seems cool to me.

The modding API will function very similarly to Bukkit. Will Bukkit plugins work as SP plugins? According to Dinnerbone, probably not. The Bukkit plugin developers could theoretically add SP support to their plugins without too much effort, since the Bukkit API has been making changes to work alongside the SP API.
I am very hopeful about this.

I had lost track of this thread. Thanks Nerevar, I quite agree!
With the incredible bukkit mods you could have all kinds of differences between each world in your multi-world mini-verse. Worlds where it is always night, or day, where there are different types of mobs, ruins of ancient civilizations, moons, etc. Being able to have all that available via bukkit multi-worlds for SSP/LAN Play would be glorius!
But yeah, the Mod "BetterLAN", for making bukkit ands its plug-ins usable through LAN-Play, is being improved and seems to be almost ready for true prime time. FUN!
--- To the Necro-whiners: The announcement of the existence of the BetterLAN system for using bukkit for SSP/LAN is a totally on-topic relevant continuation for this thread.

Hrmm... I should write a program that launches a local dedicated server with Bukkit, loads plugins (a la Bukget), and starts Minecraft all in one click.
That would allow players to get used to plugin-based mods while we wait for the official API.

I'm actually surprised something like this hasn't been done yet, or that the Bukkit team hasn't made a modified client that is basically bukkit single-player. I already do this (launch the server and join locally) so that I can have multiworlds, wireless redstone, and McMMO. If you could make a launcher that does all this easy-peasy (in its own folder for convenience, maybe?), then that would be pretty cool.

I'll be sure to look into it. :3
Never made a custom launcher before. Been meaning to do so, though.

Yeah. I mean, Bukkit is part of Mojang now, so it will still have a use, but it may be very minimal
