I think this could end up being a very cool feature. Do you think it will allow for you to get enchantments higher than what is currently possible? For example fortune IV instead of III.
I don't think so, check out the pictures. They display stopping at max enchant.
Now that I think about it, isn't an anvil basically a shaped chunk of metal? Maybe you DO craft a hammer and you bring up the GUI by right clicking an iron block with a hammer?
The hoe has an important purpose, that cannot be argued. Everyone uses a hoe at some point.
GerbilCrab does have a point though.
The hoe is probably the most useless of the tools in the game, and frankly one of the most useless items period. It's a tool where there's zero point in crafting any version above a wood or stone one, and it does next to nothing. It only tills farmland, and you need only do this ONCE. Most players probably only craft this item very, very, very rarely. All the other tools and such have a good variety of uses, and uses that are frequent and common, and of course can get enchantments and have tiers and whatnot. The hoe does ONLY one thing, and it's a thing you almost never have to actually do unless you jump up and down on your own crops for some silly reason and screw them up. .....has there EVER been a time when that thing was useful for more than like 20 seconds? I cant remember it being any better in earlier versions of the game. Yeah, you need it, IF you are going to farm crops (and you certainly dont HAVE to, there's many other forms of food in the game), but you need it SO LITTLE and so rarely that I always wonder why it's there.
I like the idea of more tools, but.... not more like that. A new tool should be something with a large variety of possible uses.
I wonder if this block maybe is like an anvil that has a hammer sitting on it? Kinda like how the crafting bench texture has like, a saw blade and other things hanging from it. That might be why there is a hammer in the GUI for the thing.
Either way, this thing is looking better and better. It looks EXPENSIVE to use, but expensive in a GOOD way, considering the effect you get. It looks like it's going to be priced out pretty well for most items. Forty-something levels for that last one in that pic set that results in the mighty Efficiency V enchantment (and others) sounds just right, considering the sheer epicness of such a pick.
I love the idea of having more choices to make, regarding XP levels. Before it was mostly a matter of, ok, WHICH item do I enchant next, and how many levels do I want to spend/risk on it? Now there'll be a whole other type of option, and I think that's just great.
I'd say this is definitely the feature I'm most excited about for 1.4 as of now. Sounds freaking awesome.
Now if only I could enchant shears with something. Not sure WHAT kinds of enchantments, but SOMETHING. Use the darn things often, I do, but cant enchant them like everything else...
I wonder: What kind of recipe will be needed to craft such a block? It'd make sense to have it use difficult to get items like the enchantment table does, since the effects it provides are very, very powerful. I personally would like to see it use the Nether Star in the recipe, so the bloody thing has a good use, but that's just me. I'll be interested to see what the recipe is regardless though.

Maybe they could add a feature such as when breaking something that you are farming with the hoe it will give more drops? I would also have to agree, as of now the hoe is almost completely useless.

It might even be just right clicking on an iron block with your fist.

I'd love to see you build a farm without a hoe.

I don't think using XP to rename items sounds very logical but it seems the most likely thing at the moment.
Think of it like this.
Only after being with you for some time and being of much use and great value to you does an item earn status.
This would be for that heavy moment where you were down to 1/2 a heart with no armor and you sliced up the 5 incoming mobs taking no damage like a samurai... and as you stand, blood and sweat dripping from your body, mind reeling from the intensity... you glance down at your diamond sword, the only thing that kept you from being zombie and spider chow... then you decide to start calling it, Gleam Drip... and an epic item is born.

I'm not sure if I like it. It has some merit behind it, but I feel like there's some way it could be done better.
Of course, not coming up with said way will result in... Absolutely nothing done.
I'm sick of being poisoned by those b*st*rd cave spiders.
Use milk.
As a side note, why is there so much off-topic discussion on this thread? We've had an argument about hoes! For goodness sake people, keep it on topic.
Totally doable, actually. Just need chickens. They'd make a great food source without much effort involved. Actually, this'd be pretty freaking easy; I dont even actually BREED my current chickens like, ever, because they fart out so many eggs. Grab eggs, throw eggs, bam, a few more chickens. And even if you want to breed them, they only need seeds, can get that from tall grass.
Or you can just build a farm as an add-on to a naturally-spawned village if you need the wheat. But a pure-chicken farm is totally doable without the hoe.
That the thing is necessary for *starting* the farms doesnt make it any more useful. You still use it for all of 20 seconds, and then it's utterly worthless for the rest of the game, and even then, there's no reason to use iron/diamond to make one. I just make the things outta wood/stone and dump them in lava somewhere once a crop area is set up, since they're useless afterwards. It's not a BAD item, it's just.... kinda pointless.
Really they should be adding new enchantments. Simple stuff like Higher jump enchant on boots. It can't be too difficult to implement. Another good enchantment would be Resistance on Armour. I'm sick of being poisoned by those b*st*rd cave spiders.
I like the Idea of adding a lectern, but you should get the automatic option to rename a item as soon as you enchant a item. Once enchanted, to fix the item you put it back into the enchanter and the levels selected determines how much durability is fixed.
Re-adding or improving enchantments is another good idea, too. Like every time you enchant a item you only get one effect, e.g, Efficiency IV. Then when you go to enchant again, you get a secondary enchantment, e.g, silktouch or unbreaking.
Also, looting could be added to picks (effects how much xp you collect from ores) and unbreaking to swords.
ADD CAPES FOR EVERYBODY!!!!!!!
More enchantment types overall wouldnt be a bad idea. I agree with that bit. More variety!
GerbilCrab does have a point though.

You don't get much uses out of them before they are broken and you have to move onto the next one, which I always thought was weird.
It seems they run out faster than other tools
Nah. It probably feels that way because they do their job instantly.
I'd love to see you build a farm without a hoe.

Don't abuse the power, you fool!

Obviously you didn't read very well. Dinnerbone responded that the old repair system is still in place.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
