12w36a The "Work in Progress" block is now called "Beacon", can be found in the Creative menu and can be crafted. The texture was changed from to and an animation was added.
12w38a Texture of block changed again. Changed from to and light beam changed.
Now just read this change log. Notice anything weird about it? The Beacon Block has not been upgraded yet?! Yes, they have upgraded the texture multiple times. And yes, they have added a crafting recipe. But it still acts the exact same way since they added it a little over 7 weeks ago. Here are some things that are wrong with it.
The interface is hard to understand and is pretty buggy. It needs to be simplified.
It is way to expensive. I personnaly think killing the Wither should be enough to fully use the Beacon Block. Killing the Wither AND needing thounsands of Iron/Gold/Emeralds/Diamonds is insane.
I feel it should have a larger range.
It needs more atributes. The 5 we have are nice. But I think it should have atleast 10. I mean they have a lot more in the unused potion code part of the game, why not use them?
Mojang only has a few weeks left to get the Beacon Block working. They should dedicate a snapshot to finishing it.
The Beacon is Jeb's project. The latest change to the Beacon was in snapshot 12w38a. Jeb was absent due to his cousin's wedding, and so made no changes for snapshot 12w39a or 12w39b, the most recent snapshots.

I mentioned they made multiple changes every now and then. My problem is non of the changes are serious changes.

The only beneficial potion effects that the beacon does not have are Water Breathing, Fire Resistance, Invisibility, and Night Vision. Without adding more potion effects, we cannot have at least 10 for the beacon.
Just out of curiosity, what potion effects besides the ones listed do you think should be created for this feature?

Water breathing
Naseau
Blindness
Mining Fatigue
Yeah, sorry. I counted wrong. there are only 4 unused potion effects. I also should have mentioned that I want some Negative effects on the beacon block also. For adventure maps, multiplayer, etc.
I still don't see why mining fatigue ,nausea and blindness should be used on the beacon, after all, why would someone lost a iron bar to make himself drunk?

The guy you are replying to said in his post that it would be useful for adventure maps, to weaken the player in specific areas.
Totally agree. I have also mentioned that the Beacon is pointless when it comes to its intended function, because no one wants to or can use THOUSANDS of the most precious metals/gems in the game to activate it. I also dislike the current texture, seems very strange to me. I do hope they fix the Beacon up soon, because it just isn't worth it currently.
Also, even though off topic, the Wither Star should have other uses, such as specially enchanted tool, weapons, and armor.
I do disagree with some of your points, IE I do not think it should come fully powered. However, it would be more balanced if it had maybe more effects (either through in-game, or even some through NBT editing or something, eh Dinnerbone?). I think it should have varying effects depending on what is used. IE, the level of the effects, IE Iron be Haste I, Gold be Haste II, Diamond be Haste III, Emerald be Haste IV. And mixing blocks could add varying points to a total value which could determine the level of the effect. Give Jeb time, he may yet do something fantastic.

Emeralds are easier to get then diamonds. Just saying.

Fair enough, It's not the prettiest interface I've ever seen either.
I have to disagree with you there. Instead of making it cheaper, I'd rather they made it more useful and more powerful. The idea of the beacon was to make it a long term goal a player could work towards in survival.
Perhaps using more valuable blocks increases the range? Players would initially make their pyramids from iron to get maximum power from it but, over time, swap them out with more valuable blocks (gold->emerald->diamond (emerald is not more valuable than diamond)) to increase its range, further supporting the 'long-term goal' that the beacon represents.
I agree with you on that. The beacon should have all positive potion effects available to use, excluding instant health, invisibility and possibly also night vision.
The beacon should definitely not have negative effects available to it. These would be useless to a survival player. If map makers wanted to, they could use the new custom potions tags in the latest snapshot to apply an effect with a large duration when they enter an area, via splash potion, and give them milk when they leave the area. Or, if you insist on using the beacon, it can have an NBT tag that can be edited to apply an potion effect. Otherwise, it's not needed.

Nothing is ever useless - if they don't break the game, more options are always the best idea, even if you can't see a point to them. To suggest no one else can is arrogance. I'm not saying it's more important then a lot of other things, don't get me wrong, but I like the idea.
Consider defending a fort where the attackers first have to push through (or avoid) a negative status field, for example. This'd be just as beneficial as having a "positive" field in the center, as when the attackers reach that point it's not going to help you.

How about they add an interface where only some players can get the powers?

So, someone in a single player game is going to find it useful to apply the nausea effect constantly to themselves?
I could see how it might possibly be useful in multiplayer, but then we have the same issue that the Ender Chest ran into; it's useful in one mode and not the other. Mojang fixed that by making each player have their own Ender inventory.
If you really think that the beacon absolutely must have negative options available, then that's fine. Personally I think they would just clutter up the UI and be rarely used, even in multiplayer.

I don't think the beacon should discriminate. How would it anyway? Typing names into a list? Dinnerbone has said before that he doesn't think a visual based game should be controlled through text (not survival mode anyway).
The only way I could think of doing this would be to put players heads on the blocks that make up the pyramid, but there is currently no way to obtain those legitimately. And even then, it wouldn't work very well for hardcore servers I would imagine.

That is not why they fixed it at all. It was completely unbalanced in SP because you could "backpack" with it.

...but that's just like, my opinion, man.
Praise be to Spode.

You do know they can always update it after 1.4 comes out right?
