We are flying to Seattle tomorrow, so no snapshot this week. Next, we'll start pushing these new features for a 1.4... Halloween update?

@mikeben1962 No, I'm at PAX in Seattle. Next update will be around Halloween or so
So just thought I'd make a quick post.
As you may, or may not, know this Halloween marks the 2 year anniversary of the famous Minecraft Halloween update. The update that gave us the Nether, pumpkins, fishing rods, biomes and clocks.
What do you think?
Dinnerbone has also dubbed this update the "Pretty Scary" update. Pretty, referring to the aesthetic features and scary for the scary features, such as the mob heads and the Wither and the fact that it will be released around Halloween. Mentioned around 3:20:00 of this video:
It's about 2 months away, so they still have a while.
True, but they still have to rework the lighting engine, I think they said something about completely rewriting the rendering engine to improve performance, and they still have the mod API.
Huzzah! I've been telling people they're working on the Nether. So they're fleshing it out, after all. So maybe the threads about pigmen and the Wither being in the Nether have somemore backing now....

They have 2 months. I think that's at least enough time to rerwite the render engine. And Dinnerbone is working on the Mod API, so that may be here too. But we'll see.
I would really like to see some new mobs or how about emerald equipment
Emeralds are like the currency. I doubt we'll recieve emerald gear or tools.
I personally believe that 2 months is to little time to impliment mod api, a new lighting system, and new features that many people are expecting. If it gets released then, I'd be both suprised and pleased.

Entiely possible. The modding API might be fairly... bare-bones, but the lighting engine is very doable.
To bad the creator of Optifine refused to let Mojang use his work. THAT would make the best update ever.
The jerk.

Indeed. Bigger things have been made in less time before. Not always at 100%, but also functional.
The new lighting system is a reasonably simple project. I suspect Jens is working on it personally and will have it done within the coming few weeks.
The API is Dinnerbone's project, and his experience with Bukkit lends itself well to making the Workbench API, which is essentially an official-ized version of Bukkit anyhow.
I doubt the rendering/lighting engine changes are yet to be started. I suspect that the early prototype code is already in place, but unfinished or too unstable to test alongside other features, the sort of which get included in the snapshots. Debug code. It is what messy, indie programmer like to use. :3

If he/she seriously did, then they are an idiot. They modified Mojang's game, so Mojang is allowed to do whatever they please with the code. I guess it does show that Mojang is a nice company that respects the modders.

My thoughts exactly.
+1 for Mojang
-1 for the rest of Humanity. :/

Yeah, the Mod API has some work to be done yet. They also really need to fluff out the SMP merge a bit. You don't know how many new bugs have been created on both sides because of it. And I especially want the lighting bug fixed. Main thing I want done though? Just bug fixes. Go to the 'Bugs' portion of the Ocelot on the wiki. And that's just one small aspect. I'd rather have a more refined game than more features... (also seriously, make caves less endless ;-;

A Halloween release date is not proof of them working on the Nether. Perhaps they are, but I wouldn't call this proof.

They can do a lot in 2 months, though.

WHAT?!
Danger zone.
