I personally would like to see sponges underwater along corals and of course fish. I think they should not absorb water. They should just be there and maybe get some other use.
Perhaps they would only have the water-absorbing effect if crafted with something. It could be another of those recipes where you combine it with a bunch of gold nuggets, since that seems to be consistently the way to create special versions of various items now (and it's not a bad idea to keep things consistent, and also not a bad idea to have more uses for gold).
I agree that the things should be found in the sea. There seriously needs to be STUFF in the water, beyond JUST clay at the bottom, and some passive squids.
Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I really wanna see this block put back in.
Would be lovely to have sponge mobs or just sponges as blocks under water. The old action that it had isn't really applicable now obviously, so I was thinking: Why not have it work to absorb and thus store water? Just like a tank from Buildcraft. Admittedly, this wouldn't be too useful for water, so perhaps you might be able to craft it with some nether ingredients to allow it to store lava? Would be really useful considering lava's usefulness for smelting.
If they want to tweak the world gen, maybe add "Saturated Sponges" under the ocean, that would be darker colored and not absorb water. Smelting them could give normal sponges that do absorb water.
Otherwise, it could be a trade at an NPC village, maybe?
Broken promises... are you serious? The game has had a change of lead developer. You can not honestly expect a new lead developer to cater to every whim the previous one envisioned in any organization. All of Notches plans for Minecrafts future were set aside the second he stepped down from is position, as they should be. As a lead developer you need the freedom and flexibility to do as you see fit. There were several ideas which Notch had that I really wanted to see implemented too. But I accepted that they would probably not happen the second he gave up his position.
Seriously tho, have a look that everything that Jeb has done for minecraft since he took over. And this includes everything dinnerbone has done, because ultimately all new content has to be approved by Jeb. Jeb has always had a much more open mind about the kinds of things that should be added to the game. He has also always taken a lot of ideas that the community wanted or developed as mods and implemented them in some way to the game.
I guess if there is enough public request for some of the features Notch planned Jeb will add them, but please don't be so negative about 'broken promises' etc. It just devalidates the point of your post, which ultimately is to show community request for sponges. Make your posts constructive 'hey this would be cool' and and less negative 'But you promised!' and you might actually have a chance at being listened to by the people that matter. IE Mojang and the rest of the community so we can back you.
I certainly wouldn't mind having sponges in ocean biomes. Sure, they will serve no purpose other than aesthetics for now, like dirt, but they may have a use in the future. Maybe yellow dye could be extracted from sponges.
By the way, shouldn't this be in the suggestions sub-forum?
I believe the 2 ideas should be combined, there should be a type of entity/alternative block on the ocean floor, breaking it would give sponge fragments, and it would take 9 of these sponge fragments in a crafting table to make 1 sponge block.
Emerald is useful as long as you have villages to trade with, but lapis... Ehhh, not so much.
I was commenting on the blocks. All material blocks have the same use and purposes. Saying that they don't is just silly. It is their components that are useful or not.

Great idea! Or maybe even vice versa: start with a normal sponge, and smelt it to get the saturated ones. However, saturated sponges would also be found underwater, but might be rarer? I dunno, your idea is great, I'm just throwing out other ideas. Don't mind me.

Add sponges as a very, very rare mob that only spawns in oceans, and upon death, they drop one to two sponges and 5 exp; and the sponge is affected by looting. Sponges can only be picked up using Shears or Silk Touch.
Because we seriously need more ocean content like holy crap they're so boring T_T.
This is somewhat along my thoughts. Although I think the texture needs to be revamped from a block to something that is a little more round so that it looks more organic.

Something round in Minecraft? Impossible. The rendering system simple cannot handle such complex meshes.
Besides, it would look horrible in a world of cubes and right angles.
Every single circle in any pixel of the computer is made up of tiny squares. But to the human eye, it would be round.
doesn't matter, round in minecraft = calamity, pigs would rain from the sky, creepers would replace dirt, herobrine rules the world!
yeah
you get the idea

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..
Oh god you had to bring that up.

code the game so that whenever TheLegendOfGames plays a world every air block is replaced with sponge
tadaaaaa
I would suffocate everytime I make a new world. Not exactly the way to survive.
