Forgive me for not having experimented with beacon blocks yet, but how did you do this exactly? I thought I'd read the beacons needed a clear path to the sky to light up, but you seem to have buried it 2 blocks deep. I'm guessing it doesn't shut off if you activate it and then build on top of it?
If that's true, then I suppose you could mark really deep bases and so forth (including strongholds), even with a deeply placed beacon, as long as you briefly dig a channel up to the surface to get the beacon to light?
I would prefer it if the beacon just created the light in the sky, instead of the buffs and the need for large pyramids.
Agreed; the visible beacon is the part I'm excited about. I couldn't care less about the buffs. It'd be nice if you could enable the light without any buffs/pyramid.
Right, but isn't it shining through red wool as well in the picture?

It's not shining through red wool.
The enchantment table takes up 1 block. The beacon block lights if anything above it directly isn't blocked
The light from the beacon block, however, is larger than 1 block wide. Giving the false impression it's shining though red wool under the enchantment table. There is NO wool under that table
Even if there was, you wouldn't be able to see it by looking at it
It's just like PsychoIncarnate said. I have WIP block right below the enchanting table and the light is togglable by sticky piston moving one block of the pyramid.

Uh, the beacon is completely functional without the buffs. And you only need nine blocks, not a whole pyramid.
Do you have any other ideas?

Anyway, kudos on the idea.
I can already see the possibilities in sci-fi adventure maps.
Just checked it myself
Actually, this was a cool idea. Adds awesomeness to the enchantment table

Fixed

Have nothing above it
