So I was perusing Dinnerbone's reddit account, seeing what we can expect in 1.4...
And I came across not one, not two, but numerous things he said he will likely add.
The first, and my personal favorite, because of what it implies, is:
Lecterns, because he mentioned making pillar blocks, as well as marble!
Next up...
He said he will likely implement a way for entities, IE cows, cats, dogs, blazes, and so on, to use Nether portals. (And End portals, apparently.) http://www.reddit.co...nether_portals/
Next up...
He said he MAY implement flags. Colored flags! This is the only thing that really isn't confirmed, as he only said 'Maybe'. http://www.reddit.co...out_dinnerbone/

.... You had me at marble.
Those lecterns look pretty damn sweet though. I think 1.4 is going to be my new favorite update.
Is it just me, or does it seem like Jeb and Dinnerbone are able to work twice as fast now? ;P
They were working on the server merge for the past few months. Now that it is over with they can work on more things. Mod Api will take some time, but they don't need to work to hardly on it, yet.

Awesome. I'm thinking they're jamming as many awesome features in the first month or so of development of 1.4, and then are going to go hardcore on the restructuring they've said they were going to do.
They'll be so that other players can read your books without having to actually give it to them.
Hmm, probably the first idea from him that I have absolutely zero interest in. Not surprising though, I didnt care at all about being able to write in books either. Useless in single-player, that.
Instead, this post had me at "Marble", and "mobs using portals". And better maps. The current ones are useful, but can be *really* annoying to work with at times.

Yeah, I don't personally use the writable books, but I think they're still pretty awesome. I know players on my server that use them for saving coordinates and stuff, and we also use them for lore and the like.
It's strange how Dinnerbone has added like a billion great features that he only mentions once in random tweets. Like clocks that can go on walls, maps that can go on walls. cobble fences...I'm just really surprised that they haven't tried to show off any of this features at all.
They will show them off, on Thursday, when the snapshot drops... Speaking of which, is anyone in this thread interested in hosting a snapshot server when it drops? I'd like to derp around on it a bit. If so, PM me.
I remember a tweet a while back of someone suggesting that Dinnerbone allow books to be hung from walls so they could be read like that. Dinnerbone responded with something like "I have some plans for that". I forgot about it until earlier this week I thought, "Could you read written books when it is in an item frame? There was that tweet a while ago..." But I couldn't find it and forgot what I was searching for...
Then I saw this thread and I'm like "Oh, that must have been what Dinnerbone was referring to."
Just thought I'd interest you with that anecdote. Although I wonder if you could read books in item frames without removing them? Probably not I'm guessing, if we are getting lecterns.

He has mentioned copyable maps. In a reddit post, he also mentioned that they are zoomable now!

...but that's just like, my opinion, man.
Dinnerbone said that he probably won't start working on the Lectern stuff again for a couple of weeks, for whatever reason.

I knew minecraft was going to be exciting again.
If you take careful note, the map number is 139. Which means... drumroll... They have fixed maps going derpy once there is a large number of them.
...but that's just like, my opinion, man.
