I like these new fences! I am hoping that the bug with mobs around fences will be fixed for 1.4. As it is, a pen made with fences will cause all your animals to walk up and down the fence, hopping about trying to get over it. VERY annoying. :/

The Internet is a big place, friend. I've been places you've n͍̺e̩v̦e̦̰͍͓̩ͅr̜̭̝̬̬͉̤̬ ͙ịm̖͇a͍͇̤͙̥g̤̘i͔͖̤̼̪̬n͖͔̳̬̯e̩̘ḓ͈͔̠̙͇̼̯.͎
I like the idea, it's gonna add more character in the world. But I do think that they need to fix it. I'm hoping that they don't JUST add new features in 1.4. I really want Mojang to go after all the bugs.

They minecarted it to the "Future Updates" subforum

It doesn't matter why you got minecraft. Your two sentences have no business being next to each other. You shouldn't label an argument invalid if you don't support the statement with anything sensible.
Why can't people around here read between the lines? I, like many people, bought minecraft to build stuff therefore aesthetic additions to the game are valuable and have purpose without them coming with additional benefits.
And we already had non-burnable fences with Nether fences. The only valid argument for why stone fences have value is that they give more building options.

Under no circumstances do I want villagers building ugly little houses in my world. That's my job. Link Removed

I'm sorry but this is simply not true. There are other notable differences between the cobble fences and wooden fences.
1) Cobble fences are visually less than 1 block in height. The only areas of a cobble fence which appear to be a full block in height are at corners, or when a torch is placed on top of them. (They may (but not proven) also become the height of a full block when another block (or another cobble fence) is placed directly above them.)
2) Cobble fences take up 100% surface area of the section below their visual height.
Because of these two important aspects of the cobble fences they will act and be used in a unique way relative to regular fence blocks. For example;
- If you were to make a 1 high wall out of a regular block and place wooden fences on top of it you would be able to see thru the gaps between the fence posts, and mobs (most notably skeletons) would too.
- When placed on the edge of a cliff or edge 1 block below the 'normal' position of a fence block (ie as ground) they will prevent you from falling off the edge just like a regular fence. However, because they are lower they will not block your visibility as much. This will be especially useful when attempting to use bows and other ranged items from the edge.
These are just two examples of how the block will probably function or be used differently based on its properties rather than aesthetics.

The only part which is conjecture is the section that I specifically marked in itallics and said is not proven.
The rest is all quite clearly visible in the pics that have been posted already (The height of the fence and the difference in corners and with torches on it) and the already existing game mechanics in minecraft.
Make a wall of sideways stairs in minecraft and watch what a skelleton does on the other side. He sees you thru the holes and fires. Same goes for giant walls of fence. he sees thru and shoots. Now do the same with any transparent block which does not have any holes in it (Like glass, stairs facing towards you instead of sideways, glowstone) and note that the skeletons behaviour does not change (he does not see you). It is not at all conjecture to say 'if a mob has line of site it will react'.
Its cool. Discuss, discuss
this forum = the most disgusting thing ever
I see no similar thread on the front page.

take a look in the Future Updates section... where these discussions belong and you will find it...
"At least ocelots had some purpose."
Mojang will still be adding things to vanilla though.
I bought minecraft because of the building aspect. Your argument is invalid.

so fences had no purpose then?
these look really nice and I want them for the walls in mountain passes
Exactly how I feel. My castle/palace/base will now have fences that match the design!
Aw crap! all my cows escaped!

That is all purely conjecture at this point.
