The satiety offered by a melon slice is .7 for 2 hunger points (one marker.) For steak and cooked porkchop, you get 12.8 satiety for 8 hunger points. In short, two pieces of meat will give you a whole hunger bar's worth of time until you start getting hungry again. For melon slices, 2x8 = 16 (same as two pieces of meat) 8 x .7 = 5.6 satiety, or just around a quarter of a bar's time until you start getting hungry again. Bread does 5/6 (I think) which means one loaf of bread is more satisfying than 8 melon slices.
Well, duh.
But melons are very plentiful, so it can be a good tradeoff.

You missed one very big point in favor of melons: You can craft them into blocks and build with them :smile.gif:
This can also be useful for long-term storage or for transporting bulk food to remote locations. If you turn them into blocks with the intent of using them for food again, keep in mind you will lose 2-7 slices (average of 4) in the conversion. So it's not all that efficient to do this, but it can sometimes be handy.
Oh, and pistons will cause melon blocks to break into slices, so if you make a piston farm it's really fast to harvest.
