Sorry if this is in the wrong board... though it does deal with 1.8's changes. :-/
So I created a new SP Creative map today, using the seed 214175335 (I actually used a seed made up of words, but this is what it resolved to). I spawned on a small annex to a moderately-sized island in the middle of an ocean biome. At first this seemed ideal for what I wanted to use this map for, so I started building.
Then I noticed that my spawn was roughly -100, 150 away from the origin... so I flew out and found that the origin (0,0) is in the middle of nowhere. The island I spawned on was actually the closest the game could find.
Since then I've spent an hour or two flying over this huge, meaningless ocean. As of this writing I'm currently tracing the perimeter of (2000, 2000) to (-2000, -2000), and I have yet to find ANY other biome type. I know the new biomes are supposed to be "big," but this is just ridiculous.
Is this normal?? I was hoping I wouldn't have to resort to the Nether and just blindly make portals and pray that they lead to a surface that isn't an ocean. XD
Also: is there ANY way to deal with the horrible new animal spawn mechanisms? My SMP server's new map currently has all of its animals clustered in a remote area that I got lost in last night. I can't "just go kill them," because then more would spawn out beyond the boundaries of my exploration (and that's assuming I can even find the area they spawned in, again). It's worth noting that my silly little Creative Ocean Map has spawned precisely zero animals that are not squids. >_<
Any help or insights would be appreciated, thanks.
I have noticed this as well. I was entering random seeds yesterday looking for a new level to build a sweet castle/sky-bridge (thinking about the Mountain biome) and at one point I got random-dropped on a desert island. I immediately pulled my fog all the way out on distance, put my SPC fly speed to 20, and took off. I flew for like 10 minutes before I made landfall on what "appeared" to be a mostly solid mass. I don't know if maybe it was bad luck to just have a bunch of ocean biomes chain together on my seed or if it was really that massive. But at a speed of 20 I would guess I cover about 16 blocks a second (accounting for frame drops for chunk loading) which would make the length of area I crossed around 8,000-10,000 blocks (I never bothered to look at coordinates prior to flying off so I can't give a more exact figure). Still, that's pretty ridiculous. And the land mass I came up on was a flat Plains biome. At that point I just closed and deleted the save file for that map, it was pretty clear it wasn't what I was looking for. :wink.gif:
Oceans are boss. I just hope he adds more features to them.
All i can say is...
1. Find a sand island
2.Light up all caves under you
3. Build a mob trap
4. ???
5. PROFIT
I like the oceans, but they are a HUGE challenge. I have travelled about three full load-distances from spawn and have encountered 6 medium sized islands (about 100 blocks long/wide), about 20 small islands, two (TWO!) trees and ZERO animals (other than squid). After three days of swimming i have 4 bars of food, I'm currently at half a heart of health, and i'm walled into a room on a medium sized island that has only spawned monsters so far. Even had a skelly spawn in a rain storm behind be (hence the half a heart) ... first time that has happened.
So if you like a challenge, starting in an ocean biome has it ... you just better hope you pick the right direction to swim. Pretty realistic i think. The only thing i'd change is i'd like to be able to create a spear out of wood to fish with. Its realisitc and would give me a fighting chance. =)

But I agree, biomes are a bit too large.

I want to do this actually :/
