Not that I know of. Your chickens might be pushing each other down on accident, I've seen that happen a couple times before. Then they get out and fly away.

I have one chicken and I've been trying to hatch more for days now. That 1/8th chance thing really hates me. Also I found a cow in a hole about 50 meters from my home, but I can't figure out how I'm supposed to lure it back. Punching them doesn't exactly work all too well.
Yeah I have pretty much the standard simple chicken farm right now..
No redstone or pistons, just using the fence and flowing water. I tend to lose a chicken now and then but only when I am restocking(Seems the egg will push them through the glass block) but with the amount of eggs I've finally started getting it's not a big deal at all, I just kill the escapees.
I have two 'laying' stations and a 'harvest/killing' area(the third area)
Our server is never out of food! :smile.gif: Anyone wants some chicken, just grab the eggs available, toss a few in in the killing area and they have meat! Going to make a station to the right with furnaces for cooking as well as catch some cows and move a wheat/sugarcane farm near it so cake ingredients are all close together!
Best way to keep your chickens alive is to use fences. I guess your trays are enclosed by something else ?
I had mine enclosed in cobble and glass first, but after watching it for some time I noticed they glitch around, and they made noises like when getting hurt... shortly after, I had one raw chicken more ..
Fences are good for that because chickens (or any other mob) can't glitch of them, it has something to do with how they are not a real full block but keep mobs away as if they were.
It can be seen very well on RejectedDonuts second picture :
Good set up, but the redstone/piston combo is not needed :wink.gif: but without it, it can take up more space,, if space saving is waht you are looking for then thats good,, and i have about 1 egg every 4seconds at the moment..... But my design takes up a bit of space, and is double leveled :wink.gif: haha....
If you build like that, you can pretty much put as much hens as you like in it. Mine is 4*4 on the inside and has 20 hens in it, none glitching or dying.
Yeah, use fences if you want your chickens to escape. It's been tested and proven that animals can glitch through fence if the chunk is unloaded and loaded again.

I haven't had any chickens escape from this maybe the odd 1 or 2 but i read on the wiki that they dont take damage from fences, so i built out of fences....
Also with the others having problems building a pen, try something like this..... (its my first go trying to show a design be kind).
= fence. = air/space
(top view)
so the water runs in a straight line from left to right (Underneath the fences....
(Side view)
In here the middle 2 blocks of the pen are open for water to flow, this will be shown in the last picture. hopefully it makes sense.
{front on view}
this shows the water flowing out of the front of the fence and the bottom layer of the pen is hard to show, but i will explain, to get a better picture.....
from the water source to 1block before the fence 'opens' it goes down deeper 1 block and the same again for the block under the fence to get the water to flow and the chickens to stay....
if this is too confusing i will post multiple pictures to explain clearer/
The "mobs escaping through fences" problem might be caused by having multiple mobs trying to occupy the same space, so when a chunk is reloaded some of the mobs are pushed into adjacent blocks. If the particular type of block takes up the entire volume of the block-space, they suffocate, but if the block (object) doesn't fill the entire block (space) by a certain amount, they are pushed through.

^. This is the best explanation by far for the phenomenon.

By making a chunk reload that is by traveling a specific distance away then re-entering to see the chunk 're-materialize' (correct?)
If that is what is meant by reloading chunk's then i just tested this and all my chickens stayed in 1 place and none escaped, or died.
Also, is there any optimum design or building block to trap chickens, i was under the belief that fences were the optimum block to trap chickens with, are there any others that dont kill chickens if they are pushed into the walls?

How many chickens per block do you have? If Chicken volume divided Block volume (only one layer thick) < 1, then you shouldn't have any chicken fazing problems. Unless they load EXACTLY on the block, then you need 1 block per chicken. I don't know.. Can mobs respawn off center?
the fence is 2 fences high with water flowing down the middle which is about half a block in height then at the very end it is 3 blocks high due to the water needing to go under the fence,, so it looks like this.

So there's no roof?
If that's the case, then they could be being shoved up instead of out.
But I am, as are others. It's also difficult to miscount 20+ chickens to 1.
Does stationary/moving water make a difference, or the amount of space below/above them?
That is solvable:
Sorry about the poor screen shots
Front: ladder to the top and collection area.
Above view of 6 of the chicken slots.
Frontish view of one of the chicken slots.
That is hilarious. Good work too

So in short : Use fences to prevent chicken dying

Is there a tutorial somewhere for that specific one. Looks nice and would fit in well with the little town im building below my castle.

i have at least 20 in a 5x4 area that is fenced off, so only 3x2 is where they can walk, it looks something like this.
(overhead view)
How much overhead space do they have?
so im not too good at explaining things,,,

It doesn't happen all the time. It's a rarity, but it has been happening more in 1.8 than pervious versions.

@ Take
Sir/Mam, That is amazing. :blink.gif:
