I would like Mojang to consider increasing the number of Villages on the maps (and a city or two in the future! :smile.gif: ). Currently, i have given up on finding any on my three new SMP maps as i just dont seem to have any luck and the chances of finding one seem REALLY low (not to mention EVER finding the one lone stronghold). I've gotten two randomly seeded Creative maps up to about 70 megs before i gave up looking for villages in them as well, which doesnt bode well for my chances of finding them in SMP.
Now i do enjoy having to explore to find things in SMP, but it is sad to think that i could play for weeks in a SMP game and never run into one of the neatest new features. Maybe the game should generate at least one village within starting generation range of the starting spawnpoint to ensure everyone has a chance to experience them (and know that somewhere within a reasonable distance from start is a village)?
Also, it would be pretty nifty (if villages remained rare) if you could eventually entice other travellers to inhabit a village you made. Think of rescuing people from dungeons or finding lone wandered/survivors out in the wilderness and eventually attempting to rebuild civilizations. =)
I agree to part of that and disagree with the other.
Villages are not rare at all. I have 2 villages within 500 blocks from my house.
The part I agree with is the player made villages part. It would be awesome if you could build a few houses and get npcs to inhabit them. Finding people in caves and rescuing them would be awesome to.

I'd say the villages are common enough as they are. It just sounds like you're getting unlucky. I've only had a few maps where I didn't find villages, but I wasn't actively looking on those ones.

im not sure, but i think this should be in the 1.9 section
You should try the seed we use on our 'testing 1.8' server! Right near spawn, head to the desert and there is a village..go accross the mountain pass (which is surrounded by deserts, pretty cool) and there is ANOTHER village.. Off to the south(I think) there is plains and another village..all REAL close to one another. Sorta fun, makes for good outposts when mining in different areas, or for separate groups of players to chill out at the different bases.

Wow ... i must have been very unlucky. Still no luck finding one other than generating a world known to have one nearby (and i cant believe i didnt find any in the creative mode ones i've done if they are as common as the replies seem to indicate).
Still, i guess i would hate to think of people who are less proactive, or who just buy this as a game and dont particpate in the community (or know what is in each patch) to never experience some of the cooler things in the game because they get and unlucky seed (or two or three!).
Sometimes they can be right there, but we can just barely miss them(having to climb over a mountain maybe makes you go a little too far to the west or something and you skip the town)
I could not find a single mineshaft so I eventually took a random world and went into creative mode to find out where they were. I don't plan on using that world, but it was useful in helping me search for them. If all else fails I am curious if some maps just don't spawn as many villages as others, I would go into creative myself and fly around to see if I could see any and was just missing them or if they really weren't there!
No Villages on a third Creative up to 65 megs. I hate my luck =(
On the bright side, my first 1.8 Survival map i built my standard starting-house-on-an-island and started to tunnel identical 3t x 4w x 4h rooms beneath it and got down about 20 blocks and ran into an abandoned mine shaft. The thing is HUGE and difficult to navigate. I'll give it another go soon, but that place WILL kill me, i just know it. =)
I have to ask... You do know that they don't have above-ground entrances, right? You have to dig for them.
Which makes absolutely no sense when you think about it. :wink.gif:
So i finally got sick of trying to find a world with a village on my own and enlisted the help of the Minutor program on some worlds. After 6 recreations i finally found a absolute GEM of a world. Spawn starts you out facing west into the edge of a desert. Turn south and stare at a neat swamp. Behind you (east) is the edge of a grasslands biome with a great mountain biome one the other side (with one of the best mountain cliffs i've seen in game ... 50+ blocks long at least). Head north 200-300 blocks and on a nice little lake where a forest biome meets the grasslands biome sits a quaint little village (YAY!) consisting of two houses and a well.
I'm building myself a dock and retiring here... =P

I like to think of them as being abandoned for years, or due to a natural disaster..with the ravines and floods and broken parts of some of these mine shafts(and collapsed floors aka floating mineshafts from glitches) it makes it seem like there was a cave in/earthquake that destroyed the entrance to the mines..leaving the poor people to be eaten by the blue spiders!! :ohmy.gif:

Actually, I've come across numerous surface entrances to abandoned mineshafts - from the surface, from ravines, I've even found several entrances in the strange air pockets that form in the ocean floor.
Ideally we'd have sliders to control the frequency of both villages and strongholds.
Some people might want a lot of villages while others may think they're ugly and taking up prime real estate. Likewise, 3 strongholds isn't much when you consider the shear size of the game world. It might be fine for SSP, but if you have people spreading out all over the place in SMP, 3 just doesn't cut it.

Good idea ... especially as right now Minecraft has sort of a post-apolcalyptic thing going on.

I'm in a village at x:279, z:-3

After extensive Searching- I've yet to see ONE village or underground mine (yes- new, unexplored chunks only).
Yeah yeah... I can start a new map, but I'm fairly invested in this one.

No abandoned mines either? That's incredible. They were so common that the generation was halved.

Heck...
Mob spawn behavior could even be sliders.
Fixed it.

Indeed. I search below ground ranging from the very bottom on up to just below ground. Must have traversed upwards of 2 dozen ravines by now.
I'm currently just digging a straight line across 2 maps at various levels. No luck yet...
