I really enjoyed the fact that Endermen were the first mob to have a purpose. They would make the landscape EVOLVE. And their purpose was mysterious in a way... They don't even want to be observed doing it. Now they'll just be hovering around like the rest of the mobs, not doing a thing. That makes things boring. Everything needs a purpose.
Their 'old' purpose is: a random chance to pick up a block, and a random chance to place a block they're carrying. It's not mysterious is any way; you're just overdoing it to the point of enjoying your world being griefed 24/7. Their other purpose is to be another creature that the player is to fight it out with for ender pearls or xp, even though neither do a thing at the moment. So don't rule out their importance if it isn't implemented yet.
It is survival, stuff should happen. The Endermen should be quite active with their block creations. If you don't want your pretty garden messed up then play in creative mode.
Not to target, but I will now use your post as an example of a short-sighted response to this issue.
I don't want the feature removed i just want it refined. I am happy to build a properly defended house, that is a fun challenge. The only thing i cant stand about endermen is FLOATING TREES!! stop them from moving logs and i will be a happy camper
If the only problem is floating trees then install the Natural Overhaul mod and they will die and be replaced by nice new ones.. or would that CHANGE your world too much?
Why don't you install a mod that lets them move blocks?
Note that notch said "nerf" not "remove". That implies they will still be able to move blocks, just in a more constrained, and presumably less destructive manner.
This is great news, glad to hear it. Thanks Notch.
Minecraft can return to a less frustrating form. Creepers give you what you deserve, and can be avoided with skill and care. Enders taking blocks is a passive activity that requires no player input.
Enders can still be fine tuned into doing something else that would be interesting. I'm sure notch will think of something.

Correction: You're interpreting what Notch said to imply they will still move blocks. I remember when they were announced to move blocks you were smashing heads left and right, claiming (based on rumors alone) they would only be able to move non-player blocks. (apparently because it was logical?)
Here you are again, starting even more rumors based purely on speculation.
You're 0 for 1 so far on Endermen. Will it be 0 for 2 in 1.8.2/1.9? I'll be keeping score.

Nerf means to weaken, not remove. If Notch goes by his word as the word is defined, then it will be a weakened state of their pickup ability; not removal.
But yes, that's totally dependent on if Notch can figure out a way to nerf them without unbalancing the game. If he cannot, he might remove the ability, but we cannot say for sure.
So again, the word nerf; if the result relates to the definition, then mystify is, in a way, correct. But in reality we don't know for certain.

Nerf doesn't mean anything. It's a subjective term that has also meant to remove entirely. He could mean nerf Endermen which in turn means removing their block removal. He also said the entirety of the idea of moving blocks was horrible in the same breath. Keep in mind the blog he wrote where he spoke of punishing a player for their actions, and then introducing Endermen moving blocks. Clearly, he won't punish players and let them move blocks without provocation?
How would removing their ability to move blocks unbalance the game? The game has been balanced for a long time before Endermen were conceived. I'm pretty sure block moving is the last thing they need to actually be a threat.
And Mystify is full of **** and the last person I'd ever go to for predictions on Notch's broadly expressed ideas.

Nerf actually does have a vernacular* definition, by the way... Nerfing something weakens it so that it's relatively safe to play with, like how a NERF gun shoots little rubber pellet instead of bullets.
Personally I think it's kinda silly to throw it out before it's even in properly. I liked the idea and would have liked to see where it went, having them pick up blocks and build stuff out of them is a good idea.
Notch mentioned nothing of them building anything, ever. It's just speculation. He scarcely mentions their block moving when talking of them. No one knows if there was even any plans for them in 1.9 and block moving was introduced pre-maturely.
Even if he did have a plan and it wasnt a silly rumor, the block moving in it's current form is a massive hazard to the terrain/large creations. If he actually does have plans, I see no issue in removing it now in it's now, non-functional state and re-implementing it when it's actually finished. Same with the animal spawning. Imagine if he removed boosters from minecraft (mysteriously without announcing any plans with minecarts) only to later introduce powered tracks.

And like I said, vernacular definitions are prone to interpretation. I could go through the dozens of patches implemented in WoW and all the meanings 'nerf' gained through them.

Haha, I use the term as I've seen from personal experience playing WoW :tongue.gif:. For example, Paladin's get nerfed. This could mean that they have ABILITIES removed, which in turn weakens the Paladin. Oh god, time to play my druid.
How would removing their ability to move blocks unbalance the game? The game has been balanced for a long time before Endermen were conceived. I'm pretty sure block moving is the last thing they need to actually be a threat.
Ah, I meant: If, for whatever reason, the existence of the ability in any way, shape, or form (that Notch can think of or do), creates unbalance in the game, he might as well remove the ability.
Personally I think it's kinda silly to throw it out before it's even in properly. I liked the idea and would have liked to see where it went, having them pick up blocks and build stuff out of them is a good idea.
Yes, I myself would like to see the ability in the game. But only in a perfect form, not as it is now. That's considering if its perfect form is better...
And like I said, vernacular definitions are prone to interpretation. I could go through the dozens of patches implemented in WoW and all the meanings 'nerf' gained through them.
"Nerf" has been around since the 50s, if I remember correctly. WoW only increased its usage.

Plenty of meanings for words/phrases derived from years ago. Doesn't mean anything when it has common uses a significant amount of people use aside from it's original intended definition.

I was right when said randomly moving blocks was not how it s going to work. Even at PAX he said that it wasn't complete, so I consider their current phase to be incomplete, just like biomes, animal persistance, and pretty much everything else in the update.
I mean, he made it so animals don't respawn without adding breeding. Do you really think the current state of the game is intentionaly designed to function like this?
I also said that if he did make a blunder with it, he would fix it. Lo and behold, he is fixing it, and fairly soon after releaseing it.
As for the nerf terminology, he said he wouldnerf the block carrying, not the edermen. Nerfing the endermen could mean removing thier abilitity. Nerfing hte ability means the ability will be weakened.

I know. 8^) "Politician" used to mean "something sinister". And "Brave" used to mean "coward", and so on and so forth.

You were dead wrong. I remember so vividly you spinning the rumor that everyone has assumed to be true at this point. As far as I'm concerned, nothing from what Notch said speaks of any specific fix, and for all we know he could be removing it entirely. It doesn't even matter in what form, what's more important is that he acknowledged it as an issue.
If he did actually say it was only a current phase at PAX, then he contradicts himself when stating the idea of moving blocks at all was a horrible idea.
what about the endermen completely replace aimlessly walking in circles ,like any other mob, with placing/taking blocks nonestop. i think it would be really be really funny what the end result would be. like randomly finding big craters in the ground with an endermen in it.

More than you can imagine.
It better have a better ability than carrying blocks, otherwise it might as well be a tall zombie that teleports.
