I personally like all of the new terrain features except the mountains (not as spectacular when they're so common, and the "natural" ones of pre-1.8 were much cooler, but I digress) and the boring grass colors. This type of block was relatively common before 1.8:
but now the above block is a huge part of Minecraft. Too much, if you ask me. Almost all mountain landscapes and forests are covered in this ugly **** block. I propose we replace a large amount of the bad looking block (above), with something like this:
Just an idea. On a side note, I think mountains should be generated much more sparsely, should be unique to a seed ("World in the Air", "Glacier", etc.), and should generate how they used to. I think they used to be like a glitch, almost. You can't replicate "World in the Air" :\. Let me leave you with a comparison:
Couldn't you just put on a texture pack if you dislike the colour of the current mountain grass? I imagine something like this wouldn't be too hard to change.
I personally have no problem with the slight change in grass for more cold terrains. I like this kind of varity, but that is just my personal opinion.
Heh, I kinda agree with this. Sometime along the line after the halloween update something just snapped, and I got tired of about 80 percent of the grass in my world being dull and sometimes even dead, so I replaced it with the same texture that was introduced with the first versions of classic and used all they way to Alpha 1.1.2_01. The second shade is definitely more appealing, but still not the greatest.
So for the time being I'll just keep on using my biome-free texture pack.

Fair enough, but then there's the mountains >_>. Of course this is all just my opinion, though.

The pictures of your minecraft 1.3 beta seemed to be pretty erratic? Did you have the Phoenix Biome Terrain mod to get that? There are plenty of mods on changing terrain. There was an old mod to generate terrain the same way alpha use to for example. And I think somewhere someone probably went out of their way to give a mod that reverts things back to the way they were before 1.8.

I personally think you're just whining because the game is changing. Deal with it. You knew it was going to change. So did the rest of us. And if you haven't noticed, there are some really extreme mountains that people have found in 1.8.

Sorry, but I didn't know that Notch was going to kill half of the grass in the world when he added biomes. I knew he was going to add coloring, but I didn't know that he was going to add dull colors.
Please tell me the secret behind your psychic technique that lets you anticipate every last change made to the game!

Its doesn't take psychic powers to know that games are in beta and are bound to change. If you hate the texture so much, get a texture pack. I personally think the new colors seem much more real than the old colors.
But it takes psychic powers to determine exactly what changes would be made, which is the kind of context I get from your post. I realize the game is always changing -- and I mostly like it! But it is extremely difficult to anticipate what Notch is going to do next. He'll just announce stuff at random and add it quickly. We knew mushroom biomes were coming, but no one expected Mooshrooms. One day, after saying that he didn't want hunger for quite a while, he announces that he modified that opinion, and look where we are today.
So... Minecraft development is always changing, but it's nigh-unpredictable. I guess it's illogical to assume that it will always work your way, but it's perfectly ok to calmly state your opinion.
Of course those aren't end-all environmental laws, but I think it gives character to the world. I haven't found any mountains as dead-looking as the one posted above, but so far my hilly pine forest with its dark grass has served me nicely. :smile.gif:

you're taking the point I made and you're twisting it to make yourself look better. Everyone knew the biome system wasn't perfect. Notch stated many times before there were things he wanted to change about the terrain. that he wanted huge oceans. I don't see why a little texture change is a huge deal.

Excuse me, but what the ****? Your basically saying that you have to like every single update? How could you possibly have known this was going to change? It's not whining if you ask for an improvement...

However, i agree with OP.
I didn't once mention anything about having to like every single update. I also didn't say I knew anything specific that was going to change aside from what notch said. So stop making crap up. It is whining if you're complaining because textures and terrain aren't good enough for you.

Yup, and as of now there aren't any tropical biomes spawning, the "jungle" biome has been scraped. My guess is that Notch is trying to make each biome more unique before reimplementing them.
Also the mountains biomes are meant to resemble the Eurasian Steppe, little vegetation, mountainous, desaturated looking.

Really? Your post clearly says that you can't complain about anything and that you can't tell your opinion on the new updates. It is not whining if you tell what you think about these things.

What do you mean all terrain in 1.8 is boring? You'd never see this pre-1.8.
