I've read so many topics where people are complaining about new survival aspects of 1.8 and other forum users reply with 'play creative instead' as though creative is for people that find the game to hard. I myself love both creative and survival, and I play each for different reason (the survival game and free building obviously) so i don't get why some people act as though creative is just for wimps.
I think that gaming has caused many people to assume that just because someone isn't playing on Hardcore doesn't mean they're poor at the game. Minecraft equivalent is mobs - so whenever someone makes a comment about disliking the system in place for the mobs, people automatically jump to the conclusion that the person must be incompetent and need to be removed from play.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with creative mode and playing it. A lot of really interesting and amazing constructions have come from it, and to be honest, I bet that a lot of people who use "Go play creative mode" probably lack the insight and ability to make an intensive project that would require the long term planning that goes into a lot of the more complex models.
In short, people are just inflating their own ego when they use such a suggestion. I mean, clearly someone couldn't possibly enjoy both aspects for their unique contributions - so we should only base our classification of a player on creative and survivalist, right?
The problem a lot of people have is that they see Creative mode as "easy" difficulty... seemingly ignoring the fact that there's already a difficulty setting in Survival that includes Peaceful.
But... this isn't just a problem people have.
I think Notch has it, too.
They're different modes.
These are effectively different games with different concepts within the same engine. It's a testament to the flexibility of the base concept.
When I see people say "Go play Creative" I want to pull their hair out. If I wanted to play Creative I'd already be playing Creative. I'm playing Survival because I like the mechanics of that mode.
That said, the way mechanics are changing, Notch should really add a third, Adventure mode. Leave the Survival mode the way it was pre-1.8 (though include pistons) and put the new food and experience systems in Adventure mode.
Different people like to play the game in different modes. The more modes, the more likely it is people will have one they like. I don't care for Creative mode, but I'd never suggest it be taken out of the game or changed.
Creative is a great game mode. Some people's creations are amazing!
But it's being abused as a "Minecraft for n00bs" in these forums too many times :angry.gif:.
Meh. I prefer MCEdit over Creative mode, heh. You can fly, apply filters, copy&paste, remove/regenerate chunks. Granted... I'm not sure how easy it is to apply things like ladders and the such...
I just got friendly with MCEdit moving a large oceanic fortress from an older world to one of the new Ocean biomes. It was touch and go, but turned out well. I'd like to see that done in Creative mode. :wink.gif:

When all is said and done, Will you have said more than you have done?
Adding more survival like mechanics to make survival more challenging is good.. each and every change addded in 1.8 is part of survival.. When people go OMG I DON"T WANT EAT!!! play on peaceful or go play creative food is easy to get it doesn't get in the way and if you know how to adapt to it in the first place then it won't effect you.

I've put hundreds of hours into building in SMP and the most I ever cared about food were the rare occasions I had to cook porkchops before going into unexplored caves.
Now it's something I need to worry about all the time. There's no way to avoid it short of sacrificing everything else Survival offers, which is required for my building interests.
Food doesn't alter minecraft to the point you cannot build the same as before. since you spend hundreds of hours in SMP maybe you can spend 30 minutes to grow a farm buddy, or just get a stack of porkchops/steak/chicken..
Now it's something I need to worry about all the time. There's no way to avoid it short of sacrificing everything else Survival offers, which is required for my building interests.
Play on peaceful, your hunger does not go down. Even on normal your hunger only goes down about once every 2 days unless you sprint everywhere. Is it that hard? Hunger can't even kill you unless you're on hard mode anyhow, so if your life is full, you've got no problems.

Seriously. Learn to read. For that matter, just learn to use your brain.
Do you think the only difference between Survival and Creative is hunger? No. The modes are radically different. What the **** makes you think the answer to avoid this one problem is to create a dozen other ones by switching to a game mode I don't enjoy?
Do I need to gather resources in Creative? No. That's why I play Survival.
Are MOBs a threat in Creative? No. That's why I play Survival.
Do I need to build MOB traps to collect their drops? No. That's why I play Survival.
Do I need to be careful building high in the sky in Creative? No. That's why I play Survival.
But apparently everyone who dislikes hunger, or Enderman, or experience, should just be able to go play Creative and be happy, right?
Do I need to gather resources in Creative? No. That's why I play Survival. Your gathering resources correct? Gather food then it's and it's needed to some extent now
Are MOBs a threat in Creative? No. That's why I play Survival. Threat is part of survival if your hunting mobs already see next one
Do I need to build MOB traps to collect their drops? No. That's why I play Survival. Is it so damn hard to get stuff from killing mobs vs making something to do it for you? Especially since you no longer need a Skelly mob trap to get enough arrows to kill one mob its take much less to kill with a bow now thanks to the new bow mechanics
Do I need to be careful building high in the sky in Creative? No. That's why I play Survival. toggle crouch very useful.. just capslock it but in survival it is annoying building up and over because you have make a pillar going all the way up so for large projects that require such creative is useful
Seems you don't like change which is kinda funny since Minecraft has been changing alot. Endermen are not as bad a Creepers in griefing terms so I suppose you want those out as well? They get rid of 15+ blocks while endermen takes one.
Experience if you don't want it don't use it right now it has no use at all but its notch's vision to set up a skill system that utilizes it and when it is set up don't use let those who want to play the game and utilize each feature that has been implemented in the game to do so.
Hunger same as I said before if you are prepared or adapt to the change it has lesser effect on you then if you were not, or you can play peaceful where food doesn't matter. Food adds a need for food as you said previously you had no use for it other then a few pork chops correct? Well now they more use and eating to survive is common knowledge the rate it depletes is not intrusive unless your sprint strafing everywhere. Which also brings up food balances Sprint FYI would you rater have unlimited sprint? I know for a fact I wouldn't.
The "go play creative" phrase you seen around here are for those who do not like the changes that are being implemented such as food,xp,mobs, etc that make it even more similar to a RPG then it once was and think Minecraft should remain as the Build anything and everything only type of game but now you can play Creative for those who think such.
Nothing at all has been taken away from survival only added which I have no clue why so many people are raging. If your ability to mine was taken out of survival then yes that would be a issue for me forcing me to play Creative but that's not the case.
Well, I'm of the opinion where if you can't play Survival because of <random problem>, you only want to build without defenses, so creative is probably the better option. If you aren't willing to play Survival, play Creative. If you don't like Creative, and can't play Survival properly (by, I don't know, surviving?) then you probably don't like Minecraft in its current state, and should roll back to a favorite version, or find a new game.
I love creative, now that it actually exists in Minecraft Beta, so... yeah.
The worst is when people suggest that something be added to the game, then when people dislike their idea, they bash them all and tell them to go play on peaceful if they don't like it.
If your suggestion is something that people would take steps to avoid, then it's a bad suggestion.
Well, I'm of the opinion where if you can't play Survival because of <random problem>, you only want to build without defenses, so creative is probably the better option.
That's just it, when someone complains about survival, they're not saying they can't play it.
You know what, nevermind, thanks for coming to this thread. Now we have an example of what we're talking about.
Then every single game now days is full of bad suggestions.. can't please everyone.
Features are being added that do not FORCE you to change your play style at all. Minecraft 1.7.3 low on health eat food now its 1.8 low on food eat food. Or 1.7.3 kill a mob get drops(maybe) now 1.8 kill a mob get drops(maybe) & for sure XP
If one can't handle easy mode then creative is a perfectly logical answer. And it's not at all some kind of dump on creative, it fits some people, then we have the other modes, personally I think the most dangerous thing to happen is falls on any difficulty and can't understand any viable reason for saying one is too hard or too tedious.
"Go play creative," or "Play on peaceful" are just redundant one-liners uses in place of a lack of argument. Those who say it only do a disservice to their own cause, creative/peaceful mode, and all who actually enjoy playing them. They're DB's of the highest order.

What a ridiculous straw man. Yeah, Notch is going to remove mining from survival. Nothing has to be taken away from survival for new additions to completely change/ruin the gameplay. I'm not even going to argue for/against any of the changes you mentioned, but it does not excuse poor game design. Ever.
Wait, let me make a better straw man. I hope Notch adds Lava rain. It destroys everything, and kills you whether you're on the surface or below ground. Who would complain, he hasn't taken anything out of survival!
I don't think anyone is "bashing" creative mode as such but people just aren't thinking when they say "Just play creative mode!" they're just regurgitating a statement someone else said somewhere else in substitute of an intelligent response.
That said there is the equally stupid crowd on the otherside of the arguments that will say. "Let's have a third gametype!" or "I should be able to disable (Insert feature) in options!"
Erm. Well. I'm of the mind there should be a third game mode; Adventure.
Creative Mode:
Pure creation. Unlimited blocks, no threats, can move around easily and quickly.
Survival Mode:
Middle of the road. You need to work for your blocks. The world should be able to persist for a long period of time with little deterioration from MOBs. Basic RPG elements to augment the work needed to get resources to build. Emphasis on building protected structures.
Adventure Mode:
Emphasis on exploring, hunting, and monster killing. Less emphasis on building and putting down roots in one place. MOBs can be more destructive to the environment since players are more migratory. Experience/levels to grow in ability to be more efficient in combat and hunting. Hunger element included to require hunting and moving around to find pigs/cows/chickens.
Recent mechanic changes favor the latter mode. There's more emphasis on combat (charging shots), moving around (running), character growth (experience). The new passive mob spawning code makes it more likely to find mobs while generating new chunks than staying around existing ones. And Endermen will make any environment look pretty horrid over time, if you stay in one place too long.
Seems you don't like change which is kinda funny since Minecraft has been changing alot. Endermen are not as bad a Creepers in griefing terms so I suppose you want those out as well? They get rid of 15+ blocks while endermen takes one.
Uhm. Endermen are significantly more dangerous to environments than Creepers.
Creepers only become a risk when activated by a player's presence, and then a decently skills player can easily counter them before they explode and cause any damage.
Endermen can be outside your walls picking apart the terrain while you sit in your house in your Snuggie. They could spawn underground in caverns you don't even know are there, moving things around, causing water to spill over obsidian or lava to spill over diamond.
They're far more destructive than Creepers are.
Experience if you don't want it don't use it right now it has no use at all but its notch's vision to set up a skill system that utilizes it and when it is set up don't use let those who want to play the game and utilize each feature that has been implemented in the game to do so.
And if there are skills that improve resource gathering/building?
If the skills acquired through killing only improve one's ability to kill, then that's one thing. But if you need to kill to acquire skills to augment building, then suddenly those who just want to build will be pressured to do things they don't want to do. That's contrary to the sandbox nature of this game, which is what made it so popular.
If you want to kill mobs, kill mobs. If you want to build, build. One group shouldn't be penalized for not wanting to do what the other group does.
Hunger same as I said before if you are prepared or adapt to the change it has lesser effect on you then if you were not, or you can play peaceful where food doesn't matter. Which also brings up food balances Sprint FYI would you rater have unlimited sprint? I know for a fact I wouldn't.
And will I be able to sit at the bottom of my MOB trap overnight, collecting resources like I use to do from time to time? Or will I come back to the game and find myself dead from starvation?

It's nature is slowly changing to be more and more RPGish. That's not the game I bought. If Notch wants to evolve the game into something new, that's fine. But there's nothing stopping him from creating a new mode or allowing us to download older versions legitimately, so we can play the game we paid for.

Eating food to survive what blasphemy is this!!
