"Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. At night monsters come out, make sure to build a shelter before that happens."
Well, it looks like I should get to work on updating a certain list...
Survival mode isn't about avoiding death. It's about harvesting resources and building cool **** while there are things in the map that can kill you. If you just want to survive and do nothing else, then dig yourself a hole, cover it up, and never do anything in MC ever again. Yay! You're winning!
i actually thought you might be intelligent as for being open minded but unaccepting of the new thing that are happening in minecraft, notch made a game, that is a hit, and decides to add stuff he might think is cool, xp, hell if it lets me mine faster or double drops( mcmmo reference) id love that!!! but for now it does nothing, meaning please, don't argue over something that doesn't do anything, and notch is putting survival into the game, meaning play to role-play, this is what the game is called... its a sandbox rpg....with SMP and neat mods it makes it amazing, lastly, for food and hunger, peaceful is boring as hell... no monsters, meaning id be bored with no thrill...and also, with the new regeneration system... no one can "cheat death" by spamming golden apples while swimming across lava..... please... atleast give stuff thought before you hate?
In the time that it took you to write this semi-coherent rant you could've learned how to code in Java, written mods that eliminate hunger and experience, and still had time to get the sand out of your vagina.
On a serious note, making sweeping generalizations about what the entirety of the community likes and dislikes isn't helping your argument. Neither is stating your own personal experience, feelings and opinion as fact.
"Minecraft is about harvesting materials and building awesome ****." Minecraft is what you make of it. It is quite possibly the most versatile game on the market in recent years in terms of gameplay, replay value, and customizability via the modding community. If you just want to build "awesome ****", play creative. If you want to harvest and build play on peaceful. The survival mode is aptly named, particularly with the addition of hunger.
And the "charm" of Minecraft is not its lack of realism, but its fluidity.
Umm... Seriously?? Make a mod?? You need the coder pack for that.
I only saw two things with the OP. 1. You don't like the hunger/healing system and 2. You don't like the (yet to be implemented) experience system.
You're not alone in that. A lot of people have said the same thing. I would be very surprised if there weren't going to be mods that removed or altered those systems in a way to restore the feel of pre 1.8 Minecraft. You don't have to update, but when/if those mods come out, give those a try and enjoy the rest that 1.8/1.9 has to offer?
"Look, the whole "get damaged -> pick up food -> get healed instantly; never take damage -> never need to eat" system has been in computer games since the eighties and still lives on in games like Bioshock. With exceptions that Shia LaBeouf can count on what remains of his left hand, the industry has never made any attempt to introduce hunger into any of their games for the same reason why they never introduced sleeping or going to the bathroom: it's a pointless waste of everybody's time and does nothing but annoy the player. If I want to play a game where I have to worry about eating and sleeping and pissing and brushing my teeth and doing my laundry and getting regular prostate exams, I'll play The Sims, or just log off and rejoin the real world (note: although beds and sleeping have existed in Minecraft for a while, they exist solely for the purpose of skipping nighttime, and there is neither a "sleepiness bar" nor any negative effects from being awake 24/7). And to all of you who say "it makes the game more challenging", I have news for you. First of all, "more challenging" is not synonymous with "better", and secondly, the game has had an adjustable difficulty setting for a very, very long time."
I thought you said it wasn't about making the game better but based on principle. The update is actually less real. You survive long when fighting because your life replenishes. Sure if you don't eat after a long time you start to lose life but food is EVERYWHERE. Your complaint seems to be, I don't want to take the small amount of time to eat a few pieces of meat....that is a valid complaint. I would agree to that complaint, but that wasn't your complaint. It was it makes the game more realistic...in which case my retort would be...it actually doesn't make it more real. Sure you gotta eat to live is more realistic, but come on you replenish life from getting mortally wounded just by being well fed. Really it is less real than in 1.7"
"On the subject of experience, again, it looks like the Runescape/Mabinogi/Rappelz crowd is ruining the party for the rest of us. Again, at what point was it decided that the game's biggest flaw was that it wasn't Dungeons & Dragons? The fastest way to get me to leave a server is to start running MCMMO or some other leveling-up ********. Look, I have nothing against RPGs. I'm actually a recovering Diablo addict. However, Diablo is not Minecraft. Diablo is about slaying endless hordes of hellspawned demons. Minecraft is about harvesting materials and building awesome ****, and if you want to make things more "interesting", you can let hostile monsters roam around and try to kill you, and you can try to defend yourself from them. "
the experience that notch is adding and the skills that he will most likely add in 1.9 don't stop you from "harvesting materials" and "building awesome ****." Right now it has absolutely no effect on the game. Later it will most likely, but I have a feeling that it will actually benefit you to gain skill because you might harvest faster or be able to fly or something. If anything, it won't ever hinder you. Leveling has never hindered a person's experience in a game but only added in a good way to the experience.
"By introducing "experience", Minecraft has ceased to be about harvesting resources and building awesome ****, and is now about slaying endless hordes of hellspawned demons so you can collect Dragon Balls to increase your power level until it's over nine thousand. **** that."
Nope, experience has absolutely no effect on harvesting or building. Right now it has no effect at all except a funny little noise when you collect "dragon balls."
I will say, I am glad that you can continue to play 1.7 for as long as you want. That is great. I have a feeling, when all the updates are added in, you will be brought to the dark side =)
Once you get past the circular reasoning, fallacies, vitriol, hyperbole, and poor attempts at humor, you'll see this for what it is: A longer version of the hundreds of "1.8 sucks" rants.
I agree with your points although you could have said it with less profanity, that aside, I have started multiple worlds on 1.8.1 now and have gotten frustrated and started a new world because within the first day or two I cannot find enough food to survive, it took me 4 worlds to spawn near some pigs or cows to get food and then that only lasted me about 5 minecraft days, until I ran out and needed to go hunting, but to no avail with no useful animals nearby, except for one chicken, i decided i needed to farm, and with my hunger depleting and the wheat taking forever to grow, the sun setting and the zombies advancing, I switched to creative. I hate hunger. I don't mind experience as it is or what it may become, but hunger has ruined survival for me.
It seems that half of the people who've posted in this thread completely missed the fact that my points themselves were based entirely on principle, not on whether the changes made the game easier or harder.
From minecraft.net...
"Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. At night monsters come out, make sure to build a shelter before that happens."
Enjoy your daily serving of fail.
yes, you are right, but Notch never claimed that you would have to do this without RPG. Also, that is why Mojang added the creative mode. You wanna just, "build anything you can imagine?" then play in creative. You want to add a touch of RPG to it, then play in survival. There is a reason the mode is called "survival." You have to survive in order to "build anything you can imagine." There was no fail on my behalf and I'm not trying to be rude. Seriously. your complaints are perfectly within your rights. I just don't see the argument.
isn't hunger the essence of survival? Unless, by survival you just mean, hack and slash through hordes of mobs....live or die. When I think of survival, I think of being stranded on an island, having nothing on me but a shirt and jeans. Having to create a shelter, find food, create weapons to ward off any evil creatures that seek my impending death.
Also, there are plenty of ways to find food without animals. I can easily create a farm in minutes that will provide plenty of wheat to make bread. When I start a map, i can last many many game days doing these things in this order....
1. punch a tree for four pieces of log to create a crafting box, and then a sword, pickaxe, and ax.
2. take out any animals in my path (or even off path) for food.
3. collect grass which seems to be EVERYWHERE.
4. Create a small shelter.
4.b hopefully find some coal on the way
5. Create a garden near the shelter to provide food when and if I run out of meat...which hasn't happened in the 6 maps i have played.
6. Go mining for SUHWEET loot..
7. Get lost in an underground ruin, die from multiple spiders and creepers....
8. rinse and repeat.
I'm hoping XP is just a points system more than a levelling system, where you actually achieve new skillsets. It will break a lot of pvp servers.
Hunger is fine, but you heal a bit too slowly now. I think everyone is accustomed to instant-healing, but hunger is one of the only ways poison could be implemented. It's not a bad idea, but I think it could have been executed better.
Anyways, your opinion. I won't stop you from doing whatever you want to do, but don't go down on others who have different opinions than you.
It seems that half of the people who've posted in this thread completely missed the fact that my points themselves were based entirely on principle
Anybody saying "It's the principle of the thing" or any variant thereof only say that because they have nothing better to backup their otherwise baseless arguments.

haha, what I am saying...you are just saying it better. thanks.
I quite like the hunger bar. But only because food is now stackable and you can regenerate.
Previously, Id always carry 2 or 3 cooked porkchops with me when I explored. Now I can carry 64 porkchops (or any other type of food) and last for days. Not to mention that when Im on full hunger, i can drop down small cliffs and not worry about damage as I know Ill regenerate it all back in a few seconds.

to the winner....you get...well...nothing. Sorry, I'd give you something, but I have nothing. Here, as a gift, have an enderman...but be careful, i heard they are kleptomaniacs
EDIT - sorry, I was merely agreeing with you. The update actually makes it easier to survive.
While I'm not nearly as outraged as you seem to be at the changes, I do have to admit there's a lot of stuff in 1.8 that makes me sad. 1.7.3 was the peak of awesome for this game so far, and while (like you) I do like a lot of the things they added in 1.8, the whole "adventure update" concept does add a few things, such as those you mentioned, that really don't "feel" right to me.
I'm willing to give the devs the benefit of the doubt, and see what they come up with going forward, but I will definitely keep my archived copy of 1.7.3 safe, in the event that they don't pull though, and drive the game further away from what I enjoyed.
As for you posting your opinions on these boards, that was quite brave of you. Saying things like that here is akin to publicly denouncing the whole of Catholicism in the center of the Vatican.
Though IMO, Minecraft is only getting better. With NPC's and Strongholds and all the other jazz 1.8 comes with, I had to get it.
Besides, God knows what kind of mods people will come up with in 1.8
I will miss 1.7.3, but I think it's time for a change.
Btw, get owned.
