Alright. We have seen a lot of people arguing back and forth about 1.8 not running on their computer or having a problem with lower performance. We have the typical people yelling that the game is broken, and the popular counterargument that they need a better computer. Both arguments are disruptive, and more importantly, totally useless. So I decided that instead of trying to fix those arguments, I would do this.
If you are having a problem with 1.8, or not. I urge you to post some basic information here. If you would like to do this, I ask that you supply as much information as you can, but to keep it in roughly the format I provide.
Notes:
Remember: We ALL need to work together on this. Only with your information and the combined knowledge of ALL of us can we help fix these problems.
Not being able to connect to Minecraft.net is a problem with Mojang's server. It has nothing to do with Java or Minecraft itself, and can usually be resolved by trying to log in repeatedly until it works.
If you are having a Server specific issue, we may not be able to help. Server information and connectivity can vary greatly from server to server. I am also unfamiliar with the server.exe, so I am not able to help with this problem myself. Please make a note that your issue is server specific.

Version of MineCraft: 1.8 Official Release and Pre-Release 1.8 Both Versions
SSP or SMP: Both
Your Computer Specs and Operating System: Memory: 4 GB , Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo , Mac OS X Version 10.5.8, Java version 1.5.0_30 from Apple Inc (latest version)
Can you repeat this bug: Yes
What issues does the bug Cause: This happens anytime I attempt to start a new world, load any old save, or connect to any server. When trying to load the terrain it will say "Generating World" and below that "Saving Chunks", then it goes to a black screen for about 5-10 seconds and then an error report flashes by very fast.
There is an existing and extensive thread which has details on why this happens. Anyone with opengl version 1.2 will have this problem as I described it.
OK, I was having a problem playing, the game was very laggy, it would crash often, and was over all very annoying.
Then I realized at work today that I had the exact same problem playing 1.7, as well as what I may have done to resolve it: used mcpatcher to, among other things, upgrade the memory available to mincraft to 2 GB. Now it's working quite well, except for the fact that I can see my memory usage meter creep from 33% to over 50% as I keep playing.
System Specs: (when I was having the problem)
System: PC
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium, Service pack 2
Processor: Intel Core i7 2.67 GHz
RAM: 9 GB
Graphics Card: NVidea GeForce GTX260
Java: 2.67 32 bit
Minecraft Version 1.8 - SSP
Problem: Minecraft was very laggy, dropping down to single digit FPS, and would crash after 3-5 minutes
Mods: Clean Install
RAM allocated to Minecraft: Default
Thank you to my first responder. I'll make a note of it.
Edit: @Darkfyre99: Are you running a 32 or 64 bit OS? Following the same method as the one linked for finding the Processor on Windows, please list that info. That sounds like a memory leak error common with running 32bit java on a 64bit OS.
Also, are you sure you are on Java version 2.67? If that means what I think it does, you are several versions behind, but I cannot confirm.

java version has varied while i'll been trying to fix this ****. i deleted all old versions, then downloaded java 6 update 27. what would happen was, it would play like normal (choppy at times but good at others, like it always has for me), but for like 2 minutes only. then it would go to black screen, or to an insufficient memory screen, but mostly the black screen (i must've tried this 50 times by now.) so after reading around i got java 7 x84 i think, which by the way is RAPING my computer right now. minecraft was crashing in the same manner at first but then i turned it down to fast graphics. now it's just laggy and buggy as hell. i dunno if the fast graphics fix would've had the same effect with java 6. honestly the game was running just fine in terms of lag - it's this memory crash that's different for 1.8.
Are you running a 64 bit or a 32 bit (x86) OS? This also sounds like the memory leak error.

Windows
Windows 7 64-Bit
Intel Core i5 2.3GHz
8.00 GB RAM
Java: 32 Bit
Intel HD Graphics Family (Integrated graphics card I assume, as I have a laptop)
Version 1.8
My problem is that the FPS spikes and ranges anywhere from 1 to 12 at best. It gets especially bad with mobs nearby.
Clean install
Default RAM
The black screen on Mac Leopard upon loading a world is caused by the new lighting engine. I has caused a requirement for OpenGL version 1,3, but Mac systems running IOS 10.5.8 and below do not have the required drivers, to run OpenGL 1.3, resulting in a crash. It is uncertain who to blame here, Apple for not updating their drivers, or Mojang for not letting us know about the change ahead of time.
Some people say the crash is due to JAVA not being up to date, but if you read the error report the flashes on the screen you will see that the real reason is OpenGL 1.2. So far there is not any word from Notch or the Mojang team, and they seem to be ignoring the issue. At the moment there is no fan/modder created mod/patch for the issue, unfortunately.

That is definitely an issue to take up with Apple. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about that at this point.

See my thread here for relevant information about the Mac (and some windows with opengl 1.2) problem. Jeb has acknowledged the problem but it is unclear if they will do anything about it. Apple will not provide support, they want people to upgrade and pay them money. All this is in my thread

i'm not sure. my system information says:

and the processor is something x86 too. so i guess 32 bit?
