I was worried about the lack of animal respawning but having played a good 8-10hrs in 1.8/1.8.1 now, I don't really care that much. It does make the world feel a little barren in areas where you've culled all the pigs, sheep and cows, but on the plus side, it's really easy to fish... and maintaining your hunger bar at full is trivial. In fact I think it's easier to keep your health at 100% than ever before if you're just cruising around the surface "adventuring"...
Right before 1.8 was released, I found a skeleton spawner and turned it into an arrow factory. For me, that was the missing piece... now with unlimited arrows I'm finding I'm quite stoked to go adventuring all over the place (LOL duh right?). The new bow is absolutely, completely awesome and I love it... there's almost a tactile feeling at full charge, and knowledge it's going to deal a ton of damage... rad :smile.gif:
Overall I didn't know what to expect from 1.8, but my mob grinders still work, and all the enhancements seem to me to be very additive. The longer draw distance is really, really cool. I hope Notch can find a way to further optimize this so it runs nicer on more systems, presumably that will happen. Anyways, I'm stoked, the game is running great on both my 2010 Macbook Pro running 10.6.8 and my PC running Windows 7.
If you don't like 1.8, I seem to remember a neat feature that got added a while back. It's this screen that shows up and asks you if you want to update. And if you click no... it doesn't update! 1.7.3 forever! Huzzah, we can all have our cake and eat it too.
Now if you'll excuse me, there's an enderman eying my cake.

Yeah, endermen are pretty scary like the other day I was exploring a mine for diamond, then when I turned the corner, I literally jumped, they are creepy, but I find them waaaayyy too easy to kill
Awesome thread, you forgot one thing though. Giant Mushrooms, you can use them for houses. Build a small house inside a red one, use the brown to walk on etc. It's epic!
You must be confusing a well executed idea for a poorly executed one.
They aren't scary, they're incredibly clumsy and right now are just badly done.
they're scary when your just starting a new world and have almost nothing with you except a stone sword. sure they don't have dramatic theme song and slasher music when u encounter and they might be a little buggy at first seeing as how its the FIRST official release they've been in but that doesn't mean they aren't creepy. they STARE at you before they kill you. ya they're a bit weak but then why don't u grab a mod that lets them poison you? or blow up? if your just that itchy for a teleporting creeper.

I never thought I'd have to, considering the official release usually gets bug updates.
ON TOP OF THAT, my save was a YogBox save, so I'd actually have to force update the game to get all the other files back to standard 1.7.3 before I could just replace the .jar
IMHO most of the features added to the game don't make up for the fact that interesting features spawn at a minimum of 800 blocks from each other. I don't want to travel over a 1000 blocks to find something worth seeing, and then travel another 1000 blocks to see another thing worth seeing. I mean in SMP I'm going to have to move close to 5000 x or z just to find unclaimed terrain.

....so you don't like the adventure update because you don't like to go adventuring? If you're too lazy to travel, just stick with 1.7.3. Or creative mode.
Here's what would have been the perfect (and most likely what most people expected) Enderman to be;
That'd scare me given the right circumstances. Not these clumsy idiots we have now.
In fact I'm downloading that goddamn mod and I'm going to overwrite Notch's Enderman until he makes it better correct.
But when would that interaction occur? You aren't going to look at it, look away, look back, look away. You will look at it, and go kill it. It looks cool in a video, but it wouldn't play well.
1.8 restricts everything!!! I'm all for adventuring, but I want to sit down and build too. I want to find new backdrops without taking two minecraft days to find one. I mean the backdrops will most likely be plains, desert, forest, plains, swamp, ocean, desert, plains again. Okay that's 3000 blocks worth of worthless features. Might as well find another seed that has good terrain near the spawn. But I know if i find nice terrain it's going to be at least 800 blocks before I find more of that terrain.
It's ********. I have found so many completely awful seeds in 1.8. It makes the features of it not worth playing. I don't even bother bringing it off peaceful anymore because of the food meter. I mean so much for rewarding combat when i don't even care enough to face mobs anymore because they've made it so friggin awful to play.
All of the people I know who updated to 1.8 have wanted to revert back to 1.7.3, because single player is damn awful and our servers hadn't yet updated where 1.8 will be more bearable.

So sorry, didn't realize you enjoyed having a 20 block wide desert next to a 20 block wide rainforest. That must make it so easy to build your desert temple. Those rainforest trees just make for the perfect accent, after all.
And since when does traveling 500 blocks take two days? I have do it in under 10 minutes.
I'm really digging 1.8... love the new terrain gen, the NPC villages, and the promise of more cool stuff to come as I explore further (mineshafts, strongholds, etc)
I was a little worried about the lack of animal respawn (and they definitely do NOT respawn in 1.8, although new animals may wander in from elsewhere), but fishing has actually proven a totally fun and even, dare I say it, relaxing way to get food. If only I could keep the damn fish from flying over my head half the time :wink.gif:
I love, LOVE, the new bow. So awesome.
I was sailing around one night and saw torchlight underwater... thank you improved draw distance!! :wink.gif: Presumably a mineshaft or something down there. How do we craft scuba tanks again? :biggrin.gif:
The Endermen make me feel like the Lorax... LOL I will speak for the trees, you SOBs, with my sword and my bow! Stop doing it, stealin' blocks out of the middle of the trunk... hehehe
I can build a desert temple in 1.7.3 deserts. I don't ****ing care about themed structures really. If I walked far enough in a 1.7.3 seed I could find a backdrop for one if I needed to. I don't need one every 200 blocks.
Geez such stupidity in the forums. People can't understand why some people wouldn't want larger biomes. I mean completely dumbing down the terrain generator just so people can create themed areas that they will soon tire of is so much important than balancing the game. Really?

about 95% of peopel seem to love the larger biomes. They may be underwhelmed with the biomes themselves at the moment, but throwing a bunch of biomes into a blender and spewing it across the landscape is not very good design.
I know most people like it. That's why I feel like I'm the one getting a soggy burger with stale fries while everyone else is getting a steak from Mojang. I feel completely left out as the minority.
I propose a compr0mize 50 x 50 to 100 x 100 biomes. They don't need to be 200 x 200. 200x 200 is too large and still there needs to be more damn hills and trees. Water needs to have more sand around it.

So what if you've already updated?
You don't back up your files?

I haven't encountered any yet, so I wouldn't be right for me to list them as 'awesome' without confirmation.
Mushrooms are already on the list. :3

I think a few of those will be fixed. it would be stupid to remove snow biomes from the game.
