I've heard that 1.8 will make it easier to increase the height limit in the game above 128 blocks, but so far I haven't seen anyone who has shown how to actually do this. I would really love to increase the height to something like 256 or 512, and if it really is as easy as "changing a single value", then I'm sure someone out there has found out how to by now.
The variable exists in the client but it needs to be changed in the source -- and this is not easy due to the fact that it's been inlined, so you would have to edit every instance of the variable being referenced.

That wouldn't help, much. I don't think the height is 126 :tongue.gif:
Point is, though, is that you'd probably get an incompatible mess if you decide to screw around with it. Actually, changing the height at all would probably give you an incompatible mess, but even more so at the moment.
No, NOT another lie from notch. It's like you're trying to antagonize him. He SAID IN HIS TWITTER that the increased height would cause too much lag, and that it would break the terrain generator.
Cubic Chunks is much different than just increasing the world height, though. It allows stacking chunks, which makes it probably faster than just increasing the height, and allowing for a much greater height increase.
Er... It seems to me that increased height has been added; I see much larger mountains and much deeper holes in 1.8 than in previous versions. There just isn't way to change it's default value.
It hasn't been increased. Push f3 and watch the coords, you'll always been in the same range (0 - 128, plus a little above 128 since you can jump at the top of the map to go a little higher for a bit)

I've never seen you guys post in Robinton's thread or mine but you are right on! It's good to know that there are other people out there in the far reaches of the forums bringing the good word to the masses, heh heh. :wink.gif:
Unfortunately folks; even if you had direct access to the original source and could change that 1 variable before compile, most of you would not be happy with the results..
It would just keep doubling the height of every individual chunk. Slowing the entire game down each time in the process. Servers would be utterly unusable compared to what you put up with even now and even SSP would suffer horribly for most people. It's a dead end. Which is why notch, rightly, has chosen not to pursue that path to greater height.
Thankfully there is another way. It's called 3D chunks. It is a way of bringing virtually Infinite Height & Depth to any Voxel world and doing it more efficiently than the old linear chunks used by vanilla minecraft. This is something that has been known and talked about by Nocte for awhile, but we are lucky because it finally exists for Minecraft now!
Robinton has implemented the 3D Chunks methodology in the Cubic Chunks Height Mod. It is still beta and 1.7.3 atm, but it works, it really works. And most importantly; it is in active development and fully supported. It is the future of greater height and depth in Minecraft. It has even been proven to work in SMP, in experimental SMP versions available to you.
There are other aspects of having greater height & depth available that are being worked on too in the Cubic Labs which will forever change the way this game is experienced. Raising the height & lowering the depth has already been done, 32752m/blocks up & 32752m down, without any problems and they could just as easily be pushed out to the next step of 4.2 million km without noticeably slowing down the game. But one of the next breakthroughs is Terrain.
Terrain; The Cubic Team has already produced mountains 10km tall. Soon the newest terrain generator will be included in the release version of the Cubic Chunks Mod, and it will be configurable. Remember, the Phoenix Terrain Mod code is being integrated with the Cubic Chunks Height Mod and converted for just this purpose. People will even be able to create and use their own custom Terrain Generation plug-ins for Cubic to affect specific height levels.
You may not want that much height or depth, just a little more you say. Well, you can have that little extra you want, the rest is free. :wink.gif:
Oh yeah; You can bring your current world (1.7.3 atm) into the Cubic Matrix at any time, then bring it back out again if you wish. Using this tool. Still, always keep back-ups.

So has anyone been able to do this yet?
It's not a rumor. It is true, the Bukkit team has tried tackling it, but changing the variable results in a server crash.
Notch said that it might come later but not 1.8
Does it work in single player only then?
Also, do you know where that variable is in the jar?

ctrl + f 126

There's a mod anyway http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/310298-173robintons-mods/
NOT UPDATED YET but wait for that...
"sometimes, wizards are so awesome, it hurts"
However, this is in the patch notes:
Easier changing of the max level (map) height.
So I don't know what the ****.
