I'm saying there is a greater lack of food in this release then there will be in the next. Meaning in 1.8 there will be less food then you can get in 1.9. Right now mineshafts are everywhere and there is a limited amount of animals on each chunk. In 1.9 there will be less mineshafts and a way to breed animals. Yes I know there is farming, but I am trying to show the difference between the resources.
If I have multiple bases in multiple areas, I'm probably going to make mine tracks to connect them, granted I have a good amount of iron (which if I'm at the point to where I'm building multiple bases, I probably would). The problem would probably with gold, but I'm sure I'd work it out.
It's also a lot more likely that I'd use tracks as opposed to sprinting, as I'm going to have a world (no matter how many of them I have to try >:U) where I'm on an island, and I'd need bridges to connect myself to other places, which would probably take minecarts as I'm extremely lazy. :33
I don't even know if I'd add walking space on the bridges. :ohmy.gif:

Having to remember where I'm going all the time = inefficient. Very inefficient.
I am kind of tempted by an underground system of tunnels dedicated to sprinting. But on the surface, getting lost and falling off things would just happen to me way too often. Maybe some of you don't have this problem.
I see how sprinting could be useful early in the game but the further you get into the game, minecarts would be so much more effective. The main uses for minecarts is to move from base to base or to reach mines easily. In both cases, chances are that you'd have mined a large enough area to have atleast 3-4 stacks of iron. There is also that fact that you'd have to remember exactly where you are and how to reach other places when sprinting. As for the time issue, I've never mined just to find iron for minecart tracks. I just find iron when I'm mining to find diamonds or redstone. Also it doesnt take that long to lay minecart tracks

You offer the best argument. To be honest, you have a point, both are different so you can use them for a variety of things, well done.
I really don't care about your arguments guys, I think minecarts could use a buff though, either a speed increase or generating more tracks per recipe.
Sprinting:
Faster than minecart if sprinting in 2 block high ceiling. also fairs well if there is no ceiling
Less costly than minecarts and tracks
Much easier to set up compared to mine tracks (Depending on how much iron you have)
Also easier to get around if you have no other way to move quickly
For Minecarts, it requires a bit of redstone knowledge, knowledge of terrain, requires good planning for effective tracks
Minecarts:
Can navigate terrain more easily. (Up steep cliffs/around buildings/above lava)
100% precise/ direction guaranteed
Let's be honest; jumping up and down in a tight corridor will probably make you look like an idiot. For aesthetic purposes, Minecarts are superior.
Sprinting depletes food meter (Perhaps the only "cost" of sprinting)
When on a minecart, you can sit back and relax until you reach your destination.
On a side note, I hate how the commenter in the video is bias towards the first two runs. The minecart is 2 or 3 blocks faster when sprinting normally yet he says sprinting is the same speed as a minecart. On the next test run he beats the minecart also by 2 or 3 blocks and he says sprinting is faster. It makes me mad. :<
Anyway, my point is that mine carts are definitely not obsolete. They both still have good uses for fast travel though. It's like comparing cars, just because one car is faster than the other doesn't make the other completely useless and obsolete. Especially since sprinting still has considerable downsides.

You offer a very good viewpoint, thanks for this info :biggrin.gif:
wait... you have trouble mining iron? I started a new game, played for 1 hour and had 3 stacks of iron...
On a multi player server my friends and I had 4-5 stacks of iron BLOCKS saved up. We didn't have enough USES for iron. We had 4-5 stacks of diamond, again all legit farmed. Minecarts are incredibly useful, I love making subways from and to each of my large structures.
I'll have to check this one to see, but if sprinting truly is faster than a max speed minecart, that should probably be fixed. Not even getting into just how much time and material is necessary to set up a good minecart track, but if an average guy can outpace it on foot? Something is seriously wrong there.

In that hour you could of done other things, you dont need tracks.
-Still tedious to construct tracks, with no options for a 5-piece or 10-piece that you can lay down in one shot for example
-Slow speed issues still a problem
-Nobody seriously puts them in mines, because it's out of scale. There's no real travel time to kill underground since you're mining everywhere anyway.
Solution? Who cares. I'd rather see NPC villagers in and other new stuff. Maybe carts will always just be that thing you don't really need but can do if you want.
If they fix the low ceiling gltich, minecarts will have the advantage of speed, automation, no food use, and manueverbility. Sprinting will have the advantages of openess, iron cheapness, and low setup costs. I don't consider the iron a waste; I end up with tons of it while mining, and there is nothing better to spend mass amounts of iron on. Being able to get in a minecart and leave is valuable.

EXACTLY :biggrin.gif:
Double-tapping W is easier than spending hours gathering iron for minecart tracks.

Thanks. They are both effective ways to travel so I'm sure it'll come down to personal preference as to which method to use
Could we get a mod that does these things?
