I guess I'll pour some more gasoline on the flames. If you press ww twice quickly and immediately follow it with esc you will go into auto-sprint. You can just dig out a small 2x1 track and autosprint down it while afk.
Better than minecarts in every possible way.

For those of you that think minecarts are a better option:
1: You have to Mine ALOT of iron for tracks, Yes you can go into an abandoned mine for them but that probably takes more time than mining iron normally, you have to find the mine too.
2: To get minecarts to work, you need a surface that only slopes up 1 at a time, so you have to teraform, yes you can only jump up 1 at a time, but you can maneuver, this isnt as easy with tracks.
3: Minecart tracks have to be placed, which takes ALOT of time, not to mention booster rails and powering them, which adds to the resource count.
4: You actually do the same if not less work placing minecart tracks than making a sprinting track, which is optional. You do not need a flat surface or a roof, albeit sprinting without a roof is slightly slower, it is still extremely fast, and it doesn't require copious amounts of iron or time placing tracks, just go.
5: Food costs for sprinting are not that bad, you can sprint for 70% of the bar, which takes about 30 minutes to deplete, now that food is stackable and more accessible with chicken and beef, which can restore an entire bar, this should not be an issue. Furthermore, on peaceful you wont drain your bar. Heres a snipet from the wiki to back these facts up:
"Sprinting will be unlimited so long as the Food Bar is above 30%, but will also drain the bar slowly... The Food Bar does not drain when playing on Peaceful mode. " Minecraft wiki
So all in all, unless you have gigantic resources of iron, and are too lazy to farm, and or kill any peaceful mob aside from sheep, want 0 flexibility. or want to waste time; there is really no disadvantage to sprinting. It is FASTER than minecarts, Easier to set-up, and it takes less time overall. Seems like the obvious choice to me.
*I know this seems like an extremely biased opinion, if you really want to look at it, i really dont see much going for any alternative modes.
One more sidenote:
One situation i do prefer minecarts for, is when your traveling on the surface of the nether and you have to go around lavalakes and such, generally safer on minecarts, thanks for that idea :tongue.gif:.
You know, I have to disagree. With a well built minecart track, you hop in, and press a button, and bam, you are on your way, automatically. Sprinting doesn't work quite as smoothly as that.

Nature should really stop catering to all these furries! I mean, do we REALLY need two kinds of elephant? Puh-leaze.

Exactly. Plus it saves you quite a bit of food. Just depends on the situation. No one way of travel is best.

If they change sprinting to infinite, if you are on peaceful it is more resource friendly to sprint, but this probably can't be said if you aren't on peaceful since it will deplete your food bar fairly quickly.
Sprinting isn't infinite, it depletes your food bar, and minecarts are cooler and easier to use.
From an efficiency standpoint minecarts are the largest waste of resources you can imagine. You have to consume tonsa iron and spend tremendous amoutns to time harvesting the iron and construction, which i might add the installation fo rail lines is fixed where as you can run in any direction you desire.
From wiki:
The minecart or mine cart is a transportation tool for moving ore and materials in the process of mining.
With food being stackable, as well as easier to get with chicken and beef. There isnt much of a disadvantage here. Iron is a pain to mine, especially gigantic quantities of it, if you want a easier more efficient way use this, i don't see why you wouldn't.
Minecarts rarely are of use to me. But since SPC isn't out for 1.8, I'm soooo glad that I still have my old minecart network for most of my major destinations.
Tracks are a lot cheaper now that they're lying all over the underground. Food, on the other hand, is now non-renewable and much more valuable than it was before. Also, sprinting is a difficult way to travel unless you've got a lot of flat space.
What good are minecarts at all when the coal-fired engines don't work? Yeah, you could waste gold making powered mine carts, but that is a real pain. I wonder if this is being fixed in 1.8? Haven't seen it listed, but I could have missed it, as it is an existing bug, not a new one.
Minecarts are no longer a waste of resources. I spent 10 minutes in an abandoned mine and came out with almost 45 rails. And every time I sprint, I find myself falling into a ravine, or smack dab into other troubles. And lost! So so lost.
Minecarts still have a great place in my heart. They still make a great way to deliver loads of mined goods across large areas, and there is no way sprinting will ever be faster than a minecart/portal nether highway. In the time it takes you to collect all the food to sprint that distance, you could travel the nether highway back and forth. Not to mention the nether will get you across oceans faster....

Food is only non-renewable if you do not grow wheat or do not harvest chickens. A chicken farm is a renewable resource. Also shrooms are relatively easy to grow now. Cows and pigs will deplete but that is likely changing. Overall sprinting is a much more flexible method of getting around.
I make a point to construct modular train stations and railways for transport of goods or players. Having an automated means to send supplies back to our central town is extremely handy and much easier than having someone do it themselves.
Besides, sprinting requires you to be active at the keyboard, Minecart rails let you tab out and do whatever while you travel to your destination.

Sprinting: Double tap W and hold space. How is that not smooth. To be honest, you dont even have to teraform to jump sprint. Its a bit slower but it beats walking back and forth 100 times.

If notch or jeb did, they would have made powered minecarts better instead of adding "boosters"
But they don't.
At all.

Minecarts real functionality is in aesthetics
1 pork chop every 10 minutes > limitless amounts of iron and time laying track. And how is it cooler to use a cart >.>?
