This was originally posted in the 'Released Mods' section by Ycros, but I think it would do much better here.
Since 1.8 doesn't have a release date anymore, this is a bugfix for server administrators to fix EXP orbs and the lag that results from their existence.
It disables experience orbs (Exp orbs do nothing till 1.9 anyway ) so that the server doesn't lag when someone dies.
There are instructions at the link, but there is also important information here. Please take a look at ALL the information on the link and here before doing anything to your server and the files within.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Make sure to always back up files before you make changes. Backup your world and backup your minecraft_server.jar.
If you have a server run by a host online it may be a bit trickier. Can you modify the file on your computer and upload a new file to them? Don't try to modify it on the host. Just send them a new minecraft_server.jar. If your host does not support uploading and deleting... what kind of host are they? I'd love to hear about these kinds of hosts.
For those of you with Linux servers you can do the following to replace the jj.class file in the minecraft_server.jar if you have the Java SDK installed:
jar uf minecraft_server.jar jj.class
PLEASE NOTE:
If your server has already had someone die in it with tons of experience orbs and noone can join the server, you NEED to remove the orbs that are in the server already. This patch won't get rid of those. Choose one of the methods below to get rid of your existing orbs, then install the patch.
[A]
There is a program specifically written to remove exp orbs from the server. Take a look at a video describing where to get it and how to use it here:
[B]
1. Open up your world in MCEdit. ( Link Here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/13807-mcedit-minecraft-world-editor-compatible-with-mc-beta-173-18pre/ )
2. If you know where the player died press ctrl and then goto. Type in the coordinates if you know them. If not, try to work your way to the area. It will be laggy and you will need to be patient.
3. Once there, select the area with the marker. It works like a big cube. Click once to set one corner of the cube, move about and click again to set the next corner.
4. Right-click to stop moving the screen around and switch to mouse mode. Click on delete entities.
[C] Not recommended for very large worlds & will cause any other objects that are floating around in the server to disappear.
1. Same as [A] except at step two press ctrl+a. This will select the entire world.
2. Right click to stop moving the screen around and switch to mouse mode.
3. Click on delete entities.
Why couldn't you just set a macro to pin corners of the world? It would save a LOT of time.
I'm afraid I don't understand. Is that sarcasm or do I really just not understand?
Importing the jj.class file is extremely simple as well as downloading MCEdit and utilizing it.
There are only four steps to using MCEdit to remove EXP Orbs and it's simpler than the Linux based Pymclevel for those who don't know how to use the command prompt.
I don't see what good pinning the corners of the world would do.
EDIT: Ahh, wait. I think I see what you mean.
Next time be more precise and let me know what you're talking about.
If I understand you correctly:
You're talking about Option [B] Step 2 & 3, finding ground zero of the EXP orbs and selecting the area with your marker.
You are proposing someone somewhere writes a macro to set pins on the corner of any sized world upon pressing, clicking, or selecting the macro key. This would involve editing or modding MCEdit. Wouldn't simply doing it my way be easier? Not to mention that I think MCEdit may be protected by a license against modding and distributing a modded copy? The license can probably be checked on MCEdit's page.
Also, what you're talking about is only good for small worlds. Imagine deleting all the entities in a world the size of a gigabyte? What about a bigger world? How long would it take for the program to even select all of those? Let alone, who will write this macro? How will it be integrated into MCEdit?
Not to mention... what will happen to all the entities that arn't monsters or orbs? What about those weapons people dropped a little while back and forgot about? What about those saplings? What about that diamond ore someone just dug up before the server crashed?
Finally, it would hardly save time as the macro would have to be produced and created. The amount of time to do that compared to simply finding the area the orbs are in or going there by coordinates is very different and in favor of going there to to select the area yourself.
I disagree. Creating a macro so that the pins are set to be on the corners of the world is not practical or wise.
Is there a way to install this if I don't have access to minecraft_server.jar? (Hosting from DaddyCheese...)
In order to get it hosted, you sent them the file, yes? If this is the case, modify the minecraft_server.jar file and send it to them again.
If you requested to be hosted by them and let them do the work of uploading the file and everything, then you will need to talk to them.
I'll take a look at DaddyCheese and try to figure out which way things went.
EDIT: I can't tell how the user accesses DaddyCheese. You cannot upload a new minecraft_server.jar? You don't have to be able to access it. Just put up a new one. =) Overwrite it. Delete and replace.
I can't imagine that the site wouldn't support deleting files and uploading of files.

I contacted support and they said they don't let you access it due to 'security' issues. It's not even in the directory, it's like ... built-in, or something. They said they won't let you add any kind of mods or access the file.
Anyways, I got a refund from them and am now with BeastNode who are already 1000 times better. I have full access and got the fix to work. Thanks, it works great :smile.gif:

Very awesome! =D
I'm glad that you were able to figure something out.
It doesn't destroy the orbs.. we found that out the hard way
I've heard that it does and doesn't destroy the orbs. I think this may have to do with the depth of the lava the player jumps into. I'm not sure, I use this patch myself. =p
If it does have to do with the depth of the lava though, it would be because the orbs are exploding out of the player, out of the lava, and therefore don't burn. Deeper lava would solve that problem.
Dipping in lava to solve the EXP orb problem is a risky operation because the player may die before dipping in the lava bath or may not realize they have such a large amount of EXP. It also cuts down on cave exploration, since the player needs to continually kill him/herself.
Before the patch came out I tried the method, but it just never worked properly. Sooner or later someone died and they had more EXP than we'd thought.
For some reason, this only works for me when its the only patch i have installed (client). Same thing with the furnace patch. Together it doesn't work, alone both work. I honestly prefer the furnace patch, as food & gear is important o.o.
Although it is a pain in the ass to have to pick up all the exp orbs from mobs i kill, and to have to be so cautious about dieing :\

In what way do they not work together. If you would provide a bit more information then maybe someone can help you out.
I don't suffer from this problem. I use both bugfixes together.
I imagine many others are using both as well. Maybe you have some external issue to both the patches? What are your symptoms when both are installed?

http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/616925-fix-for-18-xp-orb-flooded-maps/ This is similiar to MCEdit but is a linux-based command-line run program. You will also need to download a few programs to make it work if you are on Windows.
Problem fixed!
If you have any questions, just ask.

@Klondike I just bunched the orbs together in groups of 1, 3, 7, 17, 37... (next prime twice the value of the one before)
That may be so, but there hasn't been a definite date for an update. Until then, for those who are impatient, this is a relatively easy patch. =)
