I know friggin card game... really? Only people gonna buy that is little kids who thought it would be good because minecraft was good.
I guess it's up to them where it goes from here, even if he ruins it all, the modding community will continue it the way it should have been .. and there's always fortress craft, which just isnt the same but i think its fun too
I have always supported Markus and his company because I love their game and what they do. But I recently (and seeing as this is the first large update I have been here for) have begun to doubt that what they do is all that great. I can see how the Nether would be disappointing. I got the game and heard about the Nether about a week in. So I go. What do I find? A jellyfish and some reskinned zombies. And you say that took 2 months? Wow. I know the whole life thing (ha) but seriously? This is your job, Markus. Come on. You need to put in a lot more to this game to make it what people want. And people want what they paid for. Say you worked at MacDonalds. You're going to take a break from making the fries (or reworking biome code) because it's boring. "Sorry boss, just got a bit bored, you know. What? I know she wants her fries but I'm playing Quake. Just get him to do it for a while." :/

If you truly wanted an answer, you wouldn't even have asked this on a forum to begin with, because you'd see the nonsense of your assumptions. Notch is doing just fine.
Give us some examples of this.
Aether mod? Sorry, it took 4-5 months with multiple people.
Paint mod? Yeah, TONS of new features added there (not really).
Do you even know what a betatest is?
These are assumptions based on what you personally want the Endermen to be like. Has nothing to do with Notch. I, for one, find the Endermen to be lots of fun, but "scare factor isn't something you can control for all people. I don't get scared by them at all, either - nor do I get scared by playing Doom 3 on Nightmare. That's me. If I judge Minecraft based on MY fears, then Notch will always fail me and it's futile for him to even try. So I can't, I need to judge the game on how it satisfies "most people", not just me.
Yes, in a leaked pre-release that Mojang had nothing to do with.
50 more features? So basically, a full game developed in 2 months? Not likely. Also, how exactly is Notch no longer an indie developer?
You, my good sir, are so wrong on so many levels. Learn some basic development before you rage, please. Better luck next time.
examples? Mo' Animals, More creeps and freaks, Humans+, millenaire, optifine, zeplin mod, rusumigi's mods, aether, fossils mod, airship mod, air pirate mod, various GLSL shaders, need I go further? Yes the aether took awhile, but it was rich in features and major bugs were worked out before the release.
Yes, I know waht a beta test is. Maybe you didn't have minecraft for the halloween update, but notch released a list of things he promised to do. only half of them got done in 2 months.
So basically you're saying Notch has become a lazy ass and doesn't do ****.
STOP BEING SO ****IN GREEDY
They are working on it, I've had to say this 3 times today.
It isn't like Notch doesn't work, he MADE the ****ING GAME
we're not being greedy, I'm not asking for money.. just expressing my concern in the way that they're running a multi million dollar game studio
that's a bad decision imo, if they had taken as much of the profit as they could from beta and put it into the game and hired more people to code the game, imagine how much smoother it would run and all the features, then when it's out on full release they can raise the price and make millions more on a finished game..
It's a common misconception that the more programmers, the faster and better updates we get.
to everyone complaining about 'how hard coding is' mojang could easilly get corporate funding from other game studios who im sure would let him lead development and they handle coding and advertising.. idk what cobalt is but isn't scrolls a card game? who the hell plays card games in 2011?
Scrolls is supposed to be a game (think I read Notch say this some where) he always wanted to play. Though he was never able to find a game that was like it so him and his buddy was going to make it. I'm not sure exactly what he said but it was something along them lines. I think Scroll will actually be a pretty good game if they do right with the graphics.
Also he said that he will continue to update MineCraft as long as people still play and/or buy it. There is a lot more things I think Notch wants to do to MineCraft and I doubt this is the last huge update. I think there is a lot more he wants to do but I don't think this community would like it. He hints at some different features during each interview and he does have this main idea in his head. Just I dont think he will ever tell us what that is because other companies might steal it. Plus I don't think he thinks he can get it worked in MineCraft. I'm not sure. I just try to read between the lines and look at all the things he has said. But I do know that this update might not fit in with the theme that MineCraft started with, but with the 1.9 update it will all start to fall into place.
examples? Mo' Animals, More creeps and freaks, Humans+, millenaire, optifine, zeplin mod, rusumigi's mods, aether, fossils mod, airship mod, air pirate mod, various GLSL shaders, need I go further? lots of people contrbuted to those mods, though I agree that if the community can do that for free, what should we expect from the company we all payed money for this game from?
this is java, the hardest coding ever.he needs to think about his ideas to be
original, and endermen can be scary if you know what your doing.
I seriously hope you're trolling... Java is a language for children, just dumbed down C++ syntax to teach people how to code. It's bloated and is in horrible need of optimization.

It actually shocks me that they were able to code a game like this and make that much money off of a game made in java.
I see quite a lot of new and interesting stuff in 1.8 and i'm more than happy with it.
Ignoring the few bugs which are to be expected in a pre-release such as this is, I think we've gotten exactly what we were told we'd get and it looks like both time and effort have gotten into it.
Some of you whiners need to pull the stick out of your ****.
Don't get my first post wrong. I'm still excited for the actual 1.8 release. But we're not getting everything we were told we'd get. I'm fine with the content that's coming in 1.8, but it shouldn't take 2 months to do it.
It actually shocks me that they were able to code a game like this and make that much money off of a game made in java.
isnt the xbox version coded in something different? that's going to be interesting because alot of the lag in the game is caused by bad coding, and java
dude, do you have ANY idea at ALL on how hard it is to code Java perfectly the first time, a simple 2d platformer with nothing but a shitty sprite still needs a hell of a lot of code just to start up, let alone run itself
You obviously know nothing about Java or coding
{ and } being placed everywhere does not make a language hard. Just because the syntax doesn't look like English doesn't mean its complicated.
lots of people contrbuted to those mods, though I agree that if the community can do that for free, what should we expect from the company we all payed money for this game from?
hence why the game should be free(as in libre, not as in price). That way we could modify the code without having to duct tape mods together
it ain't that bad coding, its the way they put it together with the rest of the games code, it ain't Notches Jebs or anybody elses fault
well not bad coding but it could always be rewritten to run faster, there's just too much.. java is kinda obsolete imo and they should have hired a team earlier on to recode it into something different besides java, idk which one would be the best though.
Let me explain something very, very basic about game design:
The bigger a game gets, the harder it is to introduce a new, large feature. Making modifications on old ones, even creating tweaked version of old ones, is much easier than introducing brand new ones. While it is possible to reuse parts of the game engine for things they weren't exactly intended for, it often results in some strange bugs, many of which it would take longer to fix than it would take to just change the game engine.
When people talk about the amazing things that modders do, they forget a number of things:
One: The Aether team is a big as Majong, if not bigger.
Two: It took the Aether team MONTHS to create the Aether, and they were working with something that already partially existed (i.e, the Nether, and what was assosciated with it.) There mobs also drew heavily upon the Nether mobs, to the point that ghast equivilant originally didn't despawn when the game was set on Peaceful, a feature that had come from the ghast.
Three: While the Aether is bigger than the Nether, the Nether was made by Notch alone.
Four: What's unique to the Aether is much smaller than what's unique to the Nether (That is to say, more features were added from the ground up in the Nether than the Aether); while some of it is legitimately built from the ground up as much as the corrosponding features for the Nether were (In particular, the terrain generation), most of them drew heavily upon, or were even close to copies of, things used for the nether (i.e portal generation, the ghast equivilant I can't remember the name of).
Five: Mods like industrial craft often use ONE feature from the base game, and build upon it (in the case of industrial craft, almost all of the machines are, in fact, modifies furnaces. You know this because they had the same destroy content upon destruction bug that the furnaces had.)
While legitimately clever and beneficial to the game, the modding community is much larger than Majong, and so the fact that they put out far more content than Majong should be expected. This is especially true because they build ontop of the game engine that Majong builds, and the game engine is difficult, tedious, and rewarding part of a game.
To put it simply; Notch is the furthest thing from 'lazy' you can think of.
Also, before anyone claims he's 'bad' at what he does;
One: The primary measurement of success for a game can only how enjoyable or meaningful the game is. Minecraft is, while completely meaningless in terms of message, quite meaningful in it's long term impacts on the industry, or at least, that's what I hope, and if it isn't, that's industries fault, and probably one of the most enjoyable games of an era.
Two: Should we measure Notch's competence in terms of his coding ability, I recommend you decompile the game, and read the code. The code is nothing short of beautiful.
Three: If you're lone complaint is that Notch built the game in Java, it is important to remember that Java is not only accessible, but anyone, on any operating system, can use it, without requiring entire sections to be rewritten (He could have done this be writing the game in AS3 (AKA flash), but that would have been a million times worse). At the same time, the validity of which language and environment is used can only be legitimately measured by the finished product, and I'd say it's pretty clear that the finished product is a fairly good one.
Tl;dr: OP doesn't know what he's talking about, and while it's legit to say you don't like Minecraft or the most recent update in terms of game design, calling Notch lazy is a stupid thing to do.
Well Jeffery has a point, but since I'm a fanboy I'll just take the side of Notch If I had that kind of money and more than 30 (I think that's correct) I would kickback as well, It's hard not to sympathize with Notch (Person) but it sure as hell is easy to be ALL CAPS RAGE at Notch (Developer), I saw the man code a 48h game did he strain so hard he suddenly slowed down production.
But still at the end of the day we do get updates and they get extensive testing we have to thank for that, ofc I'll continue my adoration for modders who seem to work at FTL speeds and the fact that a huge mod like Millenaire comes with almost no bugs and a simple patch to Minecraft comes with tons of them leaves me thinking.
No further bickering on Notch, I love your work besides all that
i love millenaire! I hate that they're releasing npc villages before the npc though, kinda spitting in it's creators face.. he has almost no reason to continue his work on it really
well not bad coding but it could always be rewritten to run faster, there's just too much.. java is kinda obsolete imo and they should have hired a team earlier on to recode it into something different besides java, idk which one would be the best though.
Java isn't obsolete. It's an amazing language and allows things to be cross platform. BUT it's not meant for video games. At all. Why notch picked Java over C++ is beyond me. Especially considering Java's strong point is "it memory manages for you." As you can see in minecraft, Java's memory management sucks. It would have been better to manually manage it in C++
In a sandbox game, adding a feature isn't hard. It's hard in linear games because you have to go back and made the game suited for the new feature. And it's not like the code has to be hurt so much, since Java is object oriented.
isnt the xbox version coded in something different? that's going to be interesting because alot of the lag in the game is caused by bad coding, and java
Actually the 360 version will be able to be played on the Kinect as well. And yes I am pretty sure it will still be in java, just on a disk that can be loaded into the xbox or downloaded from their game section online. Notch seems almost sure that it will be released in November and that would be smart. It will open up huge sales for the game on Black Friday and for Christmas, meaning they can make alot of money off the game being released that early. So I am sure that they will find a way to get it all out in November. Notch wouldn't miss a chance to make money like that. They will probably have the updates done through the live system on xbox and it will just be like the pc version. Except it shouldn't lag as much as the PC version cause it is ran off the xbox 360.
Tbh even if he wished to work on minecraft im not sure he can? He seem lost as in what direction he want the game to take and most things he do now days are only half done and rushed.
You're taking this the wrong way. He's come a long way since when I started playing minecraft in November 2009. I'm not doubting he's a good programmer (even though he's using the worst language of all time), it's just the fact that a single mod developer contributes more to the game than he does. And when he messes stuff up, said mod developers always have to fix it. It's just a shame.
He has to re-code the freaking main code to fix the smallest bug. Modders only have to change one tiny thing. Again I'd like to see you code and fix a game. Don't call Notch lazy if you couldn't do better.

Wow
what a scam
A retroactive effect? That shouldn't even be legal
