Minecraft is not supposed to have a story and an end. So only one stronghold could be some sort of an acomplishment, it doesn't make sense at all, even if there is some rare stuff in it, and bosses I don't know...
I'ld like the source of the discovery but until then I'm just going to say they're sufficiently rare, but once per world does not make sense and has not been verified well enough for me.
The source, from the best I have been able to figure is a reddit from someone who claims to be a perfered beta tester who has looked through the code and talked to jens about it. Of course, in the thing I read he never posted the IRC log he claimed he had, not that you can't easily fake that either. He may have posted more credible proof, but I did not see it.
In the end, no mojang confirmation, no proof. Just like endermen not moving player blocks was total canon on this forum until yesterday with zero actual proof behind it.
But, we will see soon one way or another I expect.
Yeah, that is/was my greatest fear about the "boss thing" aka strongholds. It really bothered me in Terraria, it felt dull to me.
They should definitely spawn more than once, infinitely. But they should be rare, more rare than the normal dungeons, maybe even more rare than a golden apple.
Notch sees them as a sort of final battle, the "winning" thing he was talking about.
I don't know if it is really going to be like that, so I won't complain too much.
Come on guys, it's in plain sight on the front page.
Well, there a book (Bible) that claims a guy walked on water among other funny things. It appears that many people don't believe that... A simple quoted statement, overquoted, is not really a proof.
Wait till the full adventure till you judge that.. it will probably be were the boss is and only really be for those looking for a sense of completion.
So far, the pre-release did alot of good:
Clamed people down about the unpredictable delay, Massive bug reporting and wiki update and so on.
New terrain generation is awesome (but spawning on an island without trees in the middle of a massive ocean is NOT cool)
So far evreything for me (except the oceans incident, lol) was just amazing.
My massive dissapointment is about strongholds like the title would suggest.
When we are talking about Minecraft, we are talking about a world that is nearly infinitly generating and nearly dosent have an end! This is not a terraria world where it has an end! Strongholds shoud imo spawn more then once, rarely, but more then once. Seriously... Once per world? on a world "larger then the earth"?
We of course don't know about how big strongholds are, but they are certainly very big, but obviously very small compared to the whole world.
Really? This was the only feature that dissapointed me greatly.
Must say.
P.S. instead of saying crap like "haters gunna haet" i would like for you to be honest and tell what do you think about this.
I don't need to say anything else, i've already done it.
The lack of basic reading comprehension skills mixed with the ambiguity of the original post about the strongholds is the cause of a huge misconception. It says "once", not "one". I'm taking that to mean that once your world is generated, a stronghold spawns, and that once the new chunks are generated, more will spawn. Meaning that, as many have confirmed, using the same seed isn't going to spawn the same stronghold in the same place. (Unless you're downloading a save directly). It's likely that the same system is used for the NPC villages.

'Tis not contrary to reason to prefer the destruction of the whole world to the scratching of my finger.

another option would be that the one stronghold has a limit on how far way it can generate from your spawn. Also it would be cool if there were strong hold only items. this would make the task of finding a stronghold a lot less daunting, after all its a big goal to strive for.

Your a such a great friend that if we were both in a falling plane and there was only one parachute... I would feel really bad and think of you often.
We're talking about a game that's remarkably massive, and undoubtedly has an almost infinite number of different landscapes. There are so many variables to consider that, no matter what the case may be, this game simply is not designed for any 1-per-world landmarks. It's one thing to have a rare occurrence, but absolutely nothing should be a once-spawned thing.
Once you throw Multiplayer into the mix, this only heightens the issues of topics like this.
Keep Strongholds rare. Maybe only one spawns in a 1k by 1k block range, if not more. One per world simply does not work for a list of reasons.
Yeah Im sad if strongholds are only going to spawn once per world. I would be happy if they're rare and dont spawn within a certain radius of each other. But one is just.. sad lol :tongue.gif:
Also I found a mineshaft underwater and followed it downward and found the stronghold in there. Really big, still need to explore all of this place lol. Came to one area of it and a bunch of endermen were in it holding the some of the blocks. Plus saw some spawn in a more cavelike area. so even though they do burn in daylight, they can still appear in caves at the moment.

I'm pretty sure they want to make them spawn more than once per world (if this is even true, imo to soon to say so).
Looks to me like they have enough on there plate at the moment to try and figure out how they would code them for the best balance. Like people have said, they have a good deal of loot in them and there supposed to be rather hard.
Since I firmly believe that in the future there going to be getting at least 1 "boss room" per strong hold, I also believe that more than 1 will be able to spawn per world. Its just a matter of balance that I dont think they have decided how there going to do.
I have seen 3 mob spawners in a row before, was checking from a seed that was posted and it was true. The last thing they would want is to have a seed with a few of these places right on top of each other.
Really I think in the future we will see them able to generate more than 1 per world with some other limits to help balance it out. Some thing along the lines of they have to be x distance from each other seems fair.
tl:dr I hate the "only 1 per world" thing, but I fully expect it to be changed in the future.

strongholds = 1
1/infinite = 0,000(infinite zeros)0001
0,000(infinite zeros)0001 * 100 = 0,0(infinite zeros)0001% chance of finding a dungeon
- Biomes are MUCH larger and uniform than before
-Swamp biome was added to the list of existing biomes - look for vines on trees!
- Vines
Can be collected with shears, in the manner of leaf blocks. Vines will grow on any surface they are placed on
- Beef and Chicken added
- Strongholds - spawn once per world

Ok, enough trolling... XD
Hopefully my 1.7 worlds don't have things where the stronghold was suppose to be
If there's only one, then my God, it could take AGES to find it.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left.

This would be my guess, and my hope. :wink.gif:
