I don't like it because you heal incredibly slowly, if your hungry you don't heal until you're full and if your fighting something you have to stop for 2 seconds to eat which gives a skeleton enough time to shoot you three times or a creeper enough time to blow you to hell.
You expect food to instantaneously be consumed and heal explosive wounds and scratches? It adds a challenge. Now you can't just bring a full Inventory of Pork and withstand a ton of hits. You have to be more strategic now.
@OP,
Step 1: Play on Peaceful.
Step 2: Don't worry about Hunger.
Step 3: ????
Step 4: PROFIT!
Or:
Step 1: Set gamemode to Creative.
Step 2: don't worry about Hunger.
Step 3: ????
Step 4: PROFIT!
I actually find the hunger update has made the game easier, at least with the rate you heal at, and how easy it is to carry a whole stack of steak around. The only times I've died I've been one-shotted by creepers or fallen because I was stupid. You pretty much don't take damage if you have full food bar, you heal at a ridiculous rate and if anything it needs a nerf.
Well... I like hunger, it forced us to band together for security and survival, and it prevented us from running off and building random structures everywhere in previous (S)MPs. It forced us to settle down somewhere and make a farm, a source of guaranteed continuous sustenance, as strangely, farm mobs were rare in the swamplands. But when we do find a meat animal, we can exclaim "BEEF!" with gusto.
With hunger, Minecraft came a step closer to being a great game for RPing, in that it made Minecraft feel more worldly. The character you play now has a need that constrains the player's wants. Satisfy the character's need, and the player can do willy nilly for all he/she cares. For SMP, it can naturally generate a more formal player service/exchange system, like a tavern, feeding adventurers with cooked meat (assuming not everyone is going for the building aspect or lug around a oven), in return for some... Stuff. It gives a sense of constraint to the world, wandering off into the wilderness now meant you needed to have some amount of (stackable) food on you lest you starve and become a pile of items in the snow.
Single player, once NPC villages get fleshed out, it'll play a bigger role there. Its the one thing that's preventing me from hiding in my little mining base all day. I think 1.8 is there as a platform for the real (lore filled?) adventure update to come.
If I wanted instant heals, I'd go beg Mojang for red potions.
To put it short, I feel like I'm playing a living character now.
Honestly, The new hunger/healing system is the reason I've stopped playing peaceful mode. It's actually now enough of a chalenge to stay healed that I'm willing to deal with the mobs, Before it was just a hassle I din't want to deal with, so I want to peaceful mode.
You can sacrific one inventory space to survive for DAYS. I see no issue with hunger, I love it. Gives me something else to break the monotonous task of mining or what ever I'm doing. lol
Also Notch has stated that MineCraft will have ALOT more changes as well. If you think hunger is bad, then you probably bought the wrong game.
Also I think Jeb also said that in 1.9 you will be able to farm animals. (Have baby animals to raise)
Ah, yes, the "We have your money now, so f**k you" argument. This is a building game, period. Good thing we're getting Creative mode AT LAST.
That being said... Notch said that he'd rather have the game too hard than too easy, which i personally find to be ******** (Because a game should be balanced just right, and not taken into extremes)
I think there's a conflict between people who bought the game for what it is (building sandbox) and people who want a gritty survival RP... thing with building elements. Notch seems to catter to the latter for some reason.
Regardless, Creative mode here we come!
Minecraft survival was originally created as a survival and creative game. Most survival games should have hunger and starvation. Its not that hard to sacrifice an inventory spot to survive hunger for weeks with minimal effort, all thats needed is to kill a few animals.
And if your stranded underground, rotten meat can be a last resort option, it doesn't really disrupt the game too much.
And if you really hate hunger, turn on peaceful or try creative mod, both are good.
I think there's a conflict between people who bought the game for what it is (building sandbox) and people who want a gritty survival RP... thing with building elements. Notch seems to catter to the latter for some reason.
What the hell are you talking about? I encourage you to check out Survival mode in Beta 1.8, it's much easier now.
You DO realise that only a portion of people playing minecraft is registered here?
While this might be true, they are not part of this discussion. Since this is the forum specifically linked from the minecraft.net site, however, I believe the opionions here hold great weight.
Those who do not choose to express their opinion do not matter as they do not care enough to say either way. If they want to give their feedback, they are more than welcome to do so.
In the meantime, we are talking about the opinions of those who care enough to post here - not in hypotheticals. So spare me your logical fallacies. Those who have made their voice known that they do not like the new feature are in the minority. I suggest they either find a mod to please them or move on. I don't think them stupid or ignorant, I just feel they need to accept the truth of the situation and adapt accordingly. Continuing to sit and protest despite this is pointless given that any software company who wants to turn a profit is going to adjust their software to please the majority, not the minority, of end-users. That's just software development 101.
With that established.... minecraft has been treated like a service, not a product thus far. This speaks well of Notch. Those of you who wanted your orginal building game now have it. Why you are complaining that he is further developing survival mode for the end-users who desire it is beyond me because it no longer affects you. I am pleased for you in this reaspect.
To summarize, no. Hunger did not ruin the game... though I do agree that it is at a very weird spot at the moment, where it is certainly not fine how it is. I haven't done enough testing or simply playing to see how hunger plays out, I still feel like it needs some tuning.
To my knowledge, food does not restore health directly now, no matter what the circumstances are. In addition, it takes time to eat. It'll take several seconds of being defenseless to eat myself to full, and then I need to allow for the game to periodically tick my health back up. While this certainly adds challenge and realism, this game has a tendency to be exceptionally cruel from time to time. Without a direct way to restore health, one bad incident leads to your death. When damaged, food should restore a minor amount of hearts as well as hunger. Or, we need health potions.
Hunger seems to deplete at random rates. While I've been unable to determine exactly the causes of hunger depletion and the speed at which it does so, from my experience it varies. Does it even go down if I'm standing still? If so, that's poor design. There are many times I'll play Minecraft passively while I perform other tasks, such as RP/conversations in WoW, watching TV, and so on. If I take the steps to secure myself in my house or some other safe hub, I should indeed be safe to come and go as I please. Monster attacks are avoidable when prepared, but there is nothing I can do to stop hunger from dropping. Of course, given my lack of experience, it may not deplete at all during idle times. If this is the case, this entire point is moot.
By far my biggest issue with the mechanic is that, with the current implementation, it's nothing more than an annoyance. Food is overabundant at this point with common animals dropping enough to feed you for days. It is much easier and less time consuming to step outside and kill a chicken for food than it is to set up a proper farm and store the wheat. Hunger removes from the game, rather than add to it, as key methods of resource management have been made obsolete. I can carry large amount of food, which heals my hunger for insane amounts, all of which is incredibly easy to obtain. Until Hunger has more depth (more varieties of food with their own perks/downfalls) and food supply has been balanced, it's only accomplishment is making health regeneration extremely taxing, and combat far more difficult for all the wrong reasons.
There are a huge number of solutions, but I'll list off 3 suggestions I have for the feature.
One, and this should be present regardless of any steps they choose to follow, is to allow hunger to be toggled. People who say to simply play creative or play peaceful may not realize that they are not proper solutions. Those two choices remove the issue of hunger directly, but take away other key fun factors of the game.
Two, potions. Healing potions. They should be an investment of resources though not overly expensive. These are emergency items that directly heal your health, instead of forcing you to take the time eating what may be 2+ pieces of food to start regenerating at an alarmingly slow rate.
Three, lower food supply. There is FAR too much food for this to be a worthwhile and interesting mechanic. It's simply a distraction, and a danger.
EDIT: To reiterate, I like the concept of hunger, and I think it can be far more fun than it is. Until a lot of balancing has been done, I'm not satisfied with it.
You DO realise that only a portion of people playing minecraft is registered here?

I'm sorry to argue with you but I don't think you have any idea what Notch really planned for MineCraft. I highly suggest you go and look at all the different interviews Notch has done about MineCraft. Heck you will even see here: http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/07/29/community-heroes-notch-for-minecraft/
That he says "From a game design level, I try to focus on adding things that add a new dimension to the game rather than to just add several similar versions of the same thing. I do think it would be great to have more farming options, or different types of arrows, but generally I try to go with the more radical stuff. The idea is that if I add enough things that can interact in unexpected ways, they will. I guess I’m aiming for emergent gameplay."
Also I do not see how you can say this is a "building game", as this is how Notch has said he wanted MineCraft to become. Just wait for November and the final release will be out and then we can all complain how it has changed.
Also being well fed for temporary invincibility is hilariously awesome lol
I JUST HAD CHICKEN, COME AT ME BRO!

Wherever did you get this notion?

Now speaking of hunger... I WANT HYDRATION.
but if you sprint like crazy you drop like 4 bars

Only 1 and 10 disagree enough to give a firm disapproval of the hunger feature. You guys are in the minority, I suggest you learn to adapt.
Hunger with the inclusion of sprinting has made hunting animals much easier and my first few days of 1.8 i have an abundance of food.
Personally i think hunger should drain faster.
