Ok... why did they think making it like this was a good idea?
1. If you want to find an interesting place to settle down, you have to hike (so to speak, since everything is flat and boring now) through miles of repetative landscapes to get to something good.
2. Relating to 1, when they said mountain biome, I didn't think that would be the only place you could find mountains now! Almost everything none mountain biome is just flat and the flatness goes on forever. Adventure update? reward exploration? well yea, but i didnt think the ONLY way you could be rewarded is through exploration.
3. Worlds are way too static. It kinda reminds me of when someones heart rate monitor in the hospital is showing a steady heart beat ... _______^______^______^_____^_____^_____^
when before it was more like
^__^__^__^__^__^^ ^^^^_-^__^__^____^_-^__^^__^-_^^^^^^-__^__^__^__^__^__^__^ <- notice more happy faces...lol...
In conclusion, why would i ever want an ocean or desert (but especially ocean) that goes on for 1500 blocks?
Forests are not completely flat....the main problem with the new generator is swamp, its ugly and its too common, but I think notch will change that in the future....
Also, take in mind that the new generation....is new(lol) its not fully improved yet...

It's kinda cool, but not my favorite. It will take a ton of work to dethrone my favorite generator, the one from Infdev's March 27th build. Granted, it was impractical for survival, so I think the current one is pretty cool.
But nothing will dethrone the nostalgia of pre-biomes Alpha :tongue.gif:

I actually really like the new world generator. The larger biomes and mountain ranges are awesome! Swamps are cool and I can finally build a city in the middle of the ocean!
But I do have some regrets. I miss the random and crazy formations from the earlier updates. The terain generator from the HAlloween update produces magnificent spires of stone and earth that jutted out from flat planes. Shear mountain faces fenced in wide vallies. I once found a group of spires that formed the end of a long mountain ridge. I build my house in them. I hollowed them out, strung bridges between them, and put a garden on the roof.
In 1.7 on the server I admin the coastline was very cool to explore because it had all sorts of little coves and small seas (which we treated as large lakes). There were large hills surround by planes and I build a castle on the hills and put a city around the castle.
I do agree with the OP that ONLY finding mountains in mountain biomes is pretty silly. I like the mountain biomes but why can't they have vallies in them between the peaks? That way you can nestle villages in them. Why cant a mountain range travel through different biomes so you have some mountains made of sand and others covered in trees?. Mountains seem al little cramped in their biomes... which is cool but maye also make it possible for them to be spread out a little.
I remember there being more trees. Even in Bioms that don't normally have trees, maybe make it so that they cover a hill side or surround a pond.
Swamp biome is cool but probably a little too common. I spawned in the middle of a Mountain and Swamp cluster and it took me about 5 minuets to find my way out. Which is also a plus. Roads and tunnels will make a difference for travel now.
TL;DR. I like the new biomes but I miss some of the old stuff. I'd like to see some features seen in the Halloween update and 1.7 update return. These include vallies between mountains, spires of stone and earth in random places (mountains, planes, oceans), Large hills, more complicated coastlines, mountains outside of mountain biomes, large lakes (and small ones) as well as the new oceans

1. Hence, Adventure Update
2. I've found some small mountains in non-mountain biomes, but the highest ones are in the mountain biome. Seems logic, since real mountains exist only in formations.
3. Worlds are more real, and exploration is now something necessary. The only reason you would explore more in a <1.7.3 world was to find more clay or pumpkins or to find snow for the first time. Now you need to explore a lot more.
Plains don't have mountains. They are rolling hills. Swamps don't have mountains. They are relatively flat and very wet. Forests are full of trees. Mountains that are large are for the most part barren of trees. Especially on the tops. You guys need to get out more and experience nature. The new biomes are a huge step towards being more realistic. Ps. If you must have more trees on your mountain you can always plant them.

I love the new terrain generator because I don't have to go clear the sand off of 47 beaches to make a desert that is large enough to never have to see a tree outside of my tree farm ever again.
Do keep in mind it's not finished, and since it was likely designed to show off new stuff for PAX or whatever, the random generation may be fudged a bit to show the new stuff more often.
That said, I'm very excited for the new terrain :smile.gif:. It's really a lot easier to find mountains now that they are their own biomes, and I do like the new features like ravines and rivers and stuff that make it more varied.
Not really on the same page as everybody who likes the big biomes. I really don't like the idea of walking a long ways to get to certain biomes, even if it is more "realistic."
Probably means I'll be spending a lot more time in the Nether, making a Nether transportation system. Never successfully made one, but never really tried either. Now there's likely to be a real need to make one.
Too bad the Nether right now is really, really boring :sad.gif:. 1.10 or 2.0 (whatever he decides to make it) should really be about the Nether and adding stuff there.
I don't really intend for my current 1.8 world to be the final one, as they may still tweak the terrain generation, and I don't really like my current seed anyways.
I do like the new NPC villages, and when the final 1.8 release comes out, I'm gonna move into one as my spawn point :smile.gif:. Too bad the NPCs themselves aren't coming until 1.9 :sad.gif:.

When all is said and done, Will you have said more than you have done?
Plains don't have mountains. They are rolling hills.
Ahem...
Swamps don't have mountains. They are relatively flat and very wet.
Are we going for realism here? because All I know is that I think floating islands are cool. So why not have a mountain in the middle of a swamp. It would be perfect for a fortress.
Forests are full of trees.
And if you happen to NOT be in a forrest, good luck finding enough trees.
Mountains that are large are for the most part barren of trees. Especially on the tops.
Have you seen mountains? Only the very highest have a timberline on them. And only those in desolate environments lack trees.
You guys need to get out more and experience nature.
Son, your talking to a Eagle Scout who's hiked Philmont and the Wind River's Moutan range in Wyoming. I've Kayaked the Sea of Cortez, hiked from Saratoga California to the Ocean, and spend my holidays at my grandfathers cattle ranch in central Texas.
The new biomes are a huge step towards being more realistic.
I said I liked the Biomes, remember? Before the update there was more variety within the biomes. We used to have wooded vallies cradled by low mountain ridges. Mountains of sand in the desert, spires of rock jutting from the plains, Island clusters, mountain ranges that started in the desert and ended in a forest. Now its either flat and treeless, flat with trees, flat with sand, or lots of mountains. Where are the foothills? Mountains just seem to jump out of the ground (which is cool), but why not also allow them to gradually rise to their peaks?
The topography might be moving closer in terms of size and distinction between biomes, but It has become LESS realistic in that it not longer reflects the EMENCE variety of environmental terrain, vegetation, altitude, and transitional zones we see in the REAL AND NATURAL WORLD!
Ps. If you must have more trees on your mountain you can always plant them.
My first world spawned me on an island in the middle of a MASSIVE ocean.
Do want!
Me too. I made a cool dock and sailed to a village. And I found an island that had an entrance to a HUGE ravine with abandoned minshaft RUNNING THROUGH IT. this new generator is epic!
I am liking the older Generator better, which let me make my house on a small sandy beach surrounded by large trees, with small islands dotting the coastline, and Mountains just a short walk away. This one just gives me to much boring, going to have to make a new world just to find a spot with trees, one I got no is a massive desert and massive rolling plains with a river, but no trees within 1000 blocks.
I think the OP has a point.
Here's a list of what i think is wrong with the current terrain generating.
1. The mountain biome
This is my biggest problem. I don't like how there are hardly any trees in mountain ranges.Together with that weird blueish-green color of the grass this creates a quite depressing experience. The fact that mountains have/are their own biome also reduces the terrain variety.
Prior to 1.8 we had desert mountains, jungle mountains, savanna mountains etc. Now we are left with nothing but barren tundra like mountains, which gets old pretty quickly.
I agree with the argument that mountains should travel through other biomes, and not be stuck in their own separate biomes. Also, trees on mountains, more variation in trees, and allowing trees to pop up occasionally in plains biomes and elsewhere.
This is a fantasy rpg game that we are seeing develop here, and I don't understand why it has to be too much like real life. I like natural terrain, but I also have enjoyed the crazy terrain and random environments of 1.7. Obviously the terrain generator still needs to be tweaked, and I'm not going to complain right now when 1.8 is not even properly released yet.

That is a cop-out answer and you know it.
Lol. My comment was more directed towards the OP. I grew up in the white mountains. Ive traveled the world.and seen all kinds of the variety of nature. I love the new biomes. I love the fact that they are huge. I think that is the problem most people are having with it. If your looking for mountains and you spawn in a swamp. Sure it can be frustrating to run around the vast new biomes looking for the terrain you want. But I feel people. are too quick to complain. i spent my first couple hours of the pre release just trying out as many seeds as i could. There are huge varieties to it. If you read through all the complaints you'll see one person complaining its to flat then the next one complaining that there are to many mountains and its not flat enough. If you explore around you can find that perfect area. It might take a while. And if all else fails you can always build it yourself. Might be a cop out answer, but its true.

I personally like the 1.8 pre-release generator. Though that might be due to me spawning at the edge of a forest biome and having a mountain biome within spitting distance...across some ocean/islands of course.
Personally, I find no problem with the mountain biomes. I think the one I'm at is awesome looking and plan to build my kingdom upon its peaks.
