i fel like multiple orbs would still cause too much lag. 1 orb form a player would be the best fix imo. however you could make the "sprite" for this one orb perhaps look like a small pile of orbs, giving you the same effect, but better and easier
I posted about this yesterday. Me and some other came up with the idea that you shouldn't have one giant orb, as it would be kind of broken for PvP when the skills are actually useful, so we had the idea that orbs should be like rupees from Zelda, where after so many orbs are collected they turn a different color and would drop not one, not a million, but just a few orbs of different colors, depending on how much xp you lost.
Example would be Green = 1, Blue = 5, Red = 20, Purple = 50, Silver = 100, Yellow = 500 and so on and so forth.

If Notch/Jeb wants to keep the dropping XP, then they should make it so it drops a bundle of 10 or 50 XP at a time.
Small Orb = 1xp
Slightly Bigger Orb = 10xp
Biggest Orb = 50xp
