I have a low end computer. I don't have a gaming rig because Minecraft (and Terraria) are literally the only games I play on the PC.
I have to use the toggle fog quite a bit to keep my PC from lagging and the framerate dropping. It basically reloads the world and stops the lag along with it. With the release of the 1.8 "leak" I decided to check it out only to realize that Notch wasn't joking when he said he removed it.
Now I have to go into the menu every time I need to reload the world. That is completely ridiculous. I don't see why he did it. I know I'm not alone on this... I've read a few threads here and other places with people complaining about the same thing.
But I don't get why. It's not even an OPTION to bind it to a key now. I cannot deal with constantly having to go into the menu. Tapping the fog key was a simple solution to a simple problem, and he just removed it.
I'm just hoping he puts it back in when the inevitable 1.8.1, 1.8.2, and 1.8.3. releases. If not... I can't play Minecraft anymore.
This is the dumbest complaint I've ever heard. You're basically saying, 'my computer is too **** to run minecraft, I hate Notch'

I don't hate Notch at all. I don't know where you're getting this idea. I think Notch has done a pretty awesome job so far. However, removing a harmless feature that helped many users (as demonstrated by the 50% of the people in this thread who agree with me) was a bad idea. Sorry.
I would think that this forum, as Minecraft fans, would want the game to be enjoyed by as many people as possible, including those who tapped F to keep frame lag at bay. It's a feature that is 100% optional if you dont' want to use it, and helpful to those who do. That's why the arguments againts its reintegration are laughable at best.
He probably removed it because people were using it as a method of X-Ray vision to find spawners and lava. Notice he also removed using F3 to find monsters? Yeah.
It (probably?) "works" to improve some people's speed because when you hit F, it completely wipes out all loaded chunks, and forces a reload of every chunk, as if you were just appearing in the area for the first time. Which means that for the few seconds/minutes/whatever it takes for their boat-anchor of a computer to go from "5 chunks loaded" to "30 chunks loaded", their ancient found-in-a-cereal-box graphics card is only having to render five-to-thirty chunks. Once it loads all 81 chunks (or however many), the graphics card can't handle it.
Or maybe its their lack of RAM causing serious swap-filing, and hitting F reduces the memory footprint for a while.
To which I say... tough. $50-$100 will get you a graphics card that isn't a broken piece of crap. Or more RAM.
My computer can run Minecraft on full settings at around 200 FPS. I'm wanting it to do EVEN MORE than it already does. Not going to get that by trying to cater to people with machines that not only have hardware that was outdated when the consoles came out, but probably also haven't had their drivers updated ever, are probably riddled with viruses, and probably haven't been physically cleaned out since it was built.
Do some basic maintenance on your computers, maybe upgrade a little bit, and you might get a performance boost. Otherwise, your computer probably doesn't meet whatever the minimum system requirements for Minecraft are going to be.
@people saying change render distance
I have tried this plenty of times. Even after doing this. It starts lagging in a couple of minutes after the chunks have loaded. Even if my sight is on Tiny, Short, whatever. It WILL lag.
@people saying buy a new computer
Not everyone has the money to buy a new computer. But when we say this, you resort to the render distance crap which DOES NOT WORK.
Even those mods that are supposed to help fix this lag don't work.
The BEST lag fix is the f toggle.
Finally I found this. A mod that puts the F toggle button back in.
He ended this thread without even trying. Much more help then seeing the EXACT SAME ANSWERS. WHICH DON'T WORK. Either those or the answer which a HUGE majority of people can't afford.
I agree with the OP. I just tried out 1.8 earlier today, and this was the main reason I stopped. I can't see why on earth the toggle hotkey was removed, and I'm even further baffled by the lack of an option to assign it to key even if it isn't a default.
I'll probably end up downloading the mod to reintroduce it, but as the OP said, it shouldn't be something that should have to be modded in. It was a perfectly good feature and was great for on-the-run FPS boost, and even if going to the menu to do the same thing "only takes 5 seconds", it still unnecessarily disrupts gameplay. It's not like the graphics toggle where the option you choose is for the long-term. It's something that needs to be done frequently, especially if you have an old computer.
Has anyone posed this complaint to Notch or Jeb on Reddit or Twitter? I highly doubt they'll see it here, but it is something I agree needs to be addressed.
EDIT: I'm also saddened by the amount of people waving around "new hardware" like it's the obvious answer. I'm happy for you all that you can drop $500-1000 on a new system for an indie beta game, but the vast majority of people can't. Besides, a new computer guarantees nothing. My laptop is brand new, nice processor, nice RAM, nice graphics card, and Minecraft still lags while every other game I've installed doesn't.
There will be a mod to add it back in. Guarantee it.
There already is, on the mods section of this website, doesnt require modloader or anything and it works just fine, i also play a low-mid computer. (depends on the day as to how well it works), the mod is on here already, and its stable, ive been using it all day.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
This is why I stopped using 1.8 leak. It may be a nuisance for people who use WSAD, but some people use ^ . And I use our family's laptop, so it lags a bit, which is why I always press F
<v> every few minutes.
Right, so loads of people are saying to simply buy a new computer, right?
Right, I'll go buy a computer, which should be a simple task, considering I'm fifteen years old, have very little money, and I have no way of getting money. I should easily be able to buy a $700 computer. No problem.
In all non-sarcastic seriousnes, the fog key seriously is needed for people with low end computers.
I have the same problem! why would notch remove such an important key!? I thought it might of just been a glitch but obviously not. maybe he changed it to the R key for the future update? it seems out of the way of all the other keys.
Camus said... "F allowed people to change fog levels in real time. Now they have to completely pause the game, which is fine in SSP, but impossible in SMP, leaving them open to exposure from the elements."
He also said... "When you copy and paste, do you press alt -> edit -> copy, or do you press ctrl + c? They both provide the same functionality, but the latter is a lot more convenient. Same with F for toggling fog."
PS: I'm not too stupid to think of these points myself, i'm just agreeing with him and he was the first person i heard it from sooo
OMFG @ how this thread turned out. People are acting like we're asking Notch to "bend over backwards" to put in a F*#(&$ KEYSTROKE that was already in the game. There was absolutely no reason to remove it, because you can still see mob spawners by doing it through menu method. It's disgusting how many people will defend Notch's obvious mistakes. Hell, if he made people pay for the modding tools, like he was going to do, people would be defending that as well.
hahahhahahahahahahaha okay bro you keep believing that.
It is common sense, people who would pay for the API would generate better content, otherwise their purchase would have been wasted.
Reverse the situation and you see 1000's of horrible mods which are buggy, useless, etc.
That's not to say the API would have been expensive (only a few dollars). But to me it seems that the only people who are complaining are the kids who need to borrow their Mother or Father's credit car, and have never worked a day in their life...
How the hell does unloading all the chunks, then reloading all the chunks help stop chunk loading problems?!

The answer DOES work. AND it stops people cheating, AND it improves multiplayer servers.
Buy better hardware.
