I hope everyone realizes that they're going to eventually have to upgrade their rusty toasters at some point for one reason or another.
You can't expect developers to keep machines that were already low-end in 2001 in mind when it's almost 2012. That isn't to say Notch shouldn't add the fog toggle back in (he definitely should). Keep in mind though that this is a beta, and as such, minimum system requirements are subject to change.
So this entire thread is people getting angry at notch for them having computer below the minimum specs for the game?
Oh laugh out loud.
I must say...
If your computer sucks too much to play the game you are trying to play, instead of complaining to the developer, get a job, get your parents to buy you a new one, or deal with it. Go play a game that was made for crappy computers, like something from 2000. There are plenty of good games from back then. They were designed for your computer.
I'm going to go rage on the Call of Duty forums because my windows 3.1 PC from 1992 won't run the game!
I like this guy, keep going dude. It's also more witty than linking pictures of babies crying.
Thank you, I also wanted to add that even for computers made in the past 3 years, unless you have a good enough graphics card you're going to get serious FPS problems. So don't assume people have 10 year old computers just because they can't run this. Minecraft is unoptimized as hell.

This thread seems to have been taken to two extremes.
On one side:
OMFG NOTCH YOU SUCK FOR FOR REMOVING THIS FEATURE.
On the other:
OMFG YOU PEOPLE ARE SUCH CRYBABYS IF YOU CANT AFFORD TO AFFORD A 1337 COMPUTER LIKE MINE THEN YOU DESERVE TO LAG SUCK IT UP!!! COUGH UP THE MONEY FOR A NEW PC OR STOP WHINING.
The first side is in the wrong because they are being reactionary, and there will very likely be a mod to bring it back.
The second side is full of logical fallacies. "Any percieved gain from this was your imagination" Not true, I saw a huge difference in FPS after cycling even on high/normal render. In addition, Not everyone can afford a better computer (I'm a college student, all my money goes to either food, tuition, or housing payments. I'm flat broke.), "It only takes a few more seconds". Well its still darned inconvenient. This side seems to be the worse offenders. And why are you so opposed to it being added back? Will it hurt your play experience that people with low-end machines (Like my $350 PoS Toshiba) can play minecraft too.
I'd really like to see the fog toggle added back in. I bought both my PC and netbook within the past year, and I needed to cycle through the fogs every now and again myself. It's not really a game breaker to have to go into the menu to toggle the fog, but it's definitely a bit inconvenient. I'm a full time college student with a part time job, and I simply can't afford a super spiffy awesome PC to flawlessly run minecraft ^^' (... at least not yet o_o')
It's true--cycling through the fog helped a log when the game's FPS were lagging. And I think the reason it was included in there as a tagged key was because there are a few options for it, compared to just one or two with something like fancy graphics.
Now... I think part of the reason the removal of the fog toggle is so bad right now is that this pre-release of 1.8 is already buggy and the lagging is increased more than normal. I can still run my 1.7.3 relatively well without cycling, but 1.8 can lag a bit even on tiny distance. Now, with this lag, you need to go into a menu, which lags, then go into another, which also lags! It's a vicious cycle! Hopefully once the stable version of 1.8 is released, the extreme lag will be sorted out a bit.
Otherwise, I'm hoping that Notch will listen to the pleas of his community and restore the ability to easily toggle fog. If not... well, bless those modders! <3

This.
I used the F key quite a bit, even with Optifine going, and to see it removed for.. As far as I can tell, no real reason, is a bit annoying, and forces me to stop what I'm doing, hit escape, click options, click video, click the fog option however many times I need it, then hit escape, when before I could just hit one simple button to do it within 2 seconds.
It may be "lazy", but convenience is not a bad thing to have.
Having said that though, this is a pre-beta. It may stay the same, but it may not, and I think all the hate is uncalled for.
(And the people saying that the key was placed badly.. It was/is bind-able in previous versions, unless that's an Optifine thing.)
YOU PEOPLE KEEP TRYING TO RUIN MINECRAFT, EVERYTIME I PUSHED THE 'F' KEY IT WOULD TOGGLE THE DISTANCE AND EFFECTIVELY KILL THE GAME FOR ME, IF YOU CAN'T RUN MINECRAFT THEN GO AND PLAY BLACK OPS OR SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!
I don't know why you people are putting up such **** arguments over something that had no reason to be removed.
Its just a damn hotkey. We shouldn't have to ''lolol notch broek somthin on dis 20 dollar gaem, time to coff up 700 bukz for a new computr'' because of some creator's paranoia about cheating, when people use TMI, Xray, and cheat texture packs.

Step 2) Play on Far
Step 3) There is no step 3, you're already profiting.

NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD A NEW COMPUTER.
HAVING TO GET A NEW COMPUTER OVER A LAGGY 20 DOLLAR GAME IS BLASPHEMY
HE ISN'T BITCHING, THIS ACTUALLY MAKES THE GAME TOO LAGGY FOR HIM
IF YOU ACTUALLY READ THE DAMN OP, I WOULDN'T HAVE TO POST THIS.
If I was too hard on you, here's a TL:DR
STOP TROLLING
This.
