Swamps should be full of trees that go into water and mud, no dirt, mud, no sand, shallow and deep water, dark and murky water, moss and algae on the water and trees, sinkholes and barely any surface.
This time will you guys believe me when I say that Notch needs to quit half assing stuff? Notch is crazy to think that that is a "finished" swamp biome.
In my opinion, it needs taller trees that touch at the top to make a sort of "roof" to darken the area and make it more strangled/claustrophobic, needs a thick greenish brownish fog, needs pastel lime green algae with water so thick you can't see through it, needs lilypads, and it needs komodo dragons.

I agree that recently Notch has made some poor choices when it comes to developing on a schedule. But even more recently, I've found that Notch appears to be working much harder than he has in a while. It would seem that Notch and his team have fixed NPC villages, and now the swamp.
Back on topic, I don't see the current swamp biome as a swamp, like you said. I think most of your ideas would serve to greatly improve the swamps. But instead of trees connecting near the top of a canopy, I think they should simply grow taller and overlap one another, creating the same effect.
I agree there needs to be bigger trees maybe some kind of fog like a code which makes clouds float near ground level and deeper water like everyone is suggesting
1. Taller trees with an overhanging roof of leaves.
2. Light green algae on dark water.
3. Thick fog, as in a low level field of vision.
4. Layer of cloud-like fog drifting on ground.
5. Lilypads & venus fly traps.
6. Komodo dragons.
Darker green leaves
More overhang from trees
Dirt, not grass
No sand
I like the tree that is growing in the water, but the density of trees in water should be increased, and reads should also grow in the water.

But seriously, it needs muddy/darker water and maybe more of a gloomy look to it.
As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, you will soon be. Prepare for death and follow me.
And silverfish swarms. Silverfish swarms everywhere.
