Agreed. It makes me quite angry to see that Mojang does a stupid looking work around. It would take five minutes to throw the Fancy-Pack Mod into the game files, but no. They need an even easier solution.
I'm not trying to hate on Mojang or anything, but they could listen to the community a bit more.
Wood log, the most basic table of all time both IRL and in-game. I think that works just fine.
If they can develop electricity in minecraft (redstone) then i'm sure they can easily make and put in a table and a chair.
Seriously, it's annoying to have a house with workarounds for furniture...especially the tables since there isn't a single block that even remotely resembles a table...
Notch: But that'd require worrkkkkk, and I've already spent 50.6% of this year on vacation, don't you think I deserve a little more? I mean, your getting 1.8! Kind of
I would rather get the ability to add items/cake in the same place as a thin horizontal plane, like a painting, but solid. This would pretty much solve all problems with tables/display cases/thin ceilings. A vertical "office wall" block which could be colored would be good too, as it would let you add thin walls, easy chairs, display cases, etc.
How about we keep the pressure plate and piston tables in, but also add things like chairs, couches, etc? That way nobody complains! People who want pressure plate/piston tables can have them but the people who want craftable tables and such have theirs too.
So are you suggesting that we shouldn't get any more blocks since technically we could be "creative" and make anything possible? We can make fences out of blocks, so why do we have them? Same with a bed, a bookshelf, a sign, a painting, and so on. Wouldn't it be more creative if we could make workaround for them too? I remember how many workaround there were for beds before they were implemented in the actual game.
You see, some things would be better a block than an a lame workaround.
Everything you listed has a purpose...
Fences: Unlike a block you cannot jump over them neither can mobs unless stacked.
Bed: Gives you the option to skip the night instead of waiting.
Bookshelf: You can read books, and gives canes more use other then cakes.
Sign: Mark your territory or directions to locations one of the most helpful things in Minecraft right now both SMP and SSP
Painting: Gives you decor only other "decor" items you have is glows stone, plants, and a sculpture made of blocks.
What purpose would a Table have? What unique function would it have?
I cannot see any answer to those two answers.
With that said if Notch added something like a Armor stand that would have a unique function and I would LOVE IT have a wooden or Iron figure that's as tall as the PC with arms out would be a great item for decor. Make it like a chest but with the Armor slots instead able to lock in MP so people won't steal.
In order to fix it, he would have to allocate more bits to it. Since this has to be stored for EVERY block, then EVERY block will need more bits. And due to how computers work, that is at least another byte, so 8 more bits. That is a significant change, and will increase the memory footprint of each chunk significantly. This means it takes that much more ram, and more importantly, takes that much more time ot load and store, therey increasing lag. Esp. on SMP, where you have to send chunks over the network, so increasing their size will further harm performance. This is something that simply cannot be done without a performance hit, and it will prevent an issue that may or may not actually come up.
And if it does come up, it will be later. As in the future. As in a time period where the average computer will be faster than it is now. Hence, the player base will be that much better equipped to handle the performance hit. I mean, its been 2 years, and we havn't even used up half of the block IDs. We could go for years before it becomes an issue, which is ages when you are talking about computers.
Fair enough; but I believe the new problem is then, the huge ram requirements.

Pressure plates are meant to be stepped on, not be some sort of table/decoration. Therefore I'll still be unhappy that mojang will go so low as to even making a table workaround. A piston is a better table workaround than a pressure plate table as I've explained, so that's just a pointless feature to even consider implementing. It just doesn't offer much, if anything...
Although I agree that these pressure plate tables look stupid, you'll just have to deal with it and continue to use pistons.
I'm just giving my opinion and apparently majority of all people who've voted would rather have a new table block instead of this new feature. So I'm not exactly sure why we're getting this feature when we could be getting something even better.

I've said many reasons why we should have a table. My thread isn't even that long, couldn't you care to read it? It's just common courtesy to do so.
Table: Reasons Beyond Decoration
- Gives a spot for cakes to be placed.
- Makes cakes more accessible.
- Would make houses look less of a cluster.
- Will offer more vision than a regular block.
- Would produce less darkness than a regular block.
Anyway, I've added reasons for a table on the original post. Hope that helps.

All categorized as Decor..
Things not are similar too
-Buff cake health increase (how much it feeds you)
-Put a Map on it to view it as if it was in your hands. (Rather have it on a wall though but with a table on its side it would act the same)
Those are the only two real uses I could see them having.. since not all food is layable it would only effect cake.

The buff health increase for having it on a table would sound really good, it would encourage people to place cakes on a table. However the rest is not true.
Cakes are designed to be placed and therefore need a spot to be placed in. Darkness in this game spawns monsters. Vision in this game gives us the ability to see dangers from a distance. Cake accessibility will enhance the usage of cakes. Having a house less of a cluster will give us the ability to add more things in a house before it becomes difficult to move around in. I don't see how that has anything to do with decoration.

Yes it is cosmetic, you can lay cakes on anything if I ever use one its in a mine someone else crafted. A Glass block would give you the exact same results your are saying other the fact its not a "table" in your head.
Still there is tons of other furniture that I would love to be implemented and have more use then just sitting their. Like a chair that could be similar a bed able to skip time but instead of just over the night it will skip to certain rotations of the sun/moon. Dawn sit in chair Its noon or similar.
To sum it there is absolutely no use for a table block period
There's little to no use for crafting bookshelves and paintings for purposes outside of appearance, either. But we can still do so.
I am in favor of furniture. People don't have to use it if they don't like it, and it would allow for much nicer interior decoration. Things like tables, chairs, couches, and the like. They would all be really nice to have.

HE'S SAYING HE DOESN'T LIKE EITHER, I'D LIKE AN ACTUAL TABLE ASWELL.
I STILL USE LOGS! :u

Ram is cheap. Really. 1 Gb of ram? $10. And that is sufficient for minecraft. I na coupke of year, when block IDs run thin, it will be cheaper.
